In God of War (2018), Atreus does not become a god during the story: he discovers that he was born part god and part Giant. The reveal also gives a new meaning to his mother Faye’s choice of name for him: Loki. This is the story of Kratos’s son, not the Atreus of ancient Greek myth.
Who is Atreus in God of War?
Atreus is the young son of Kratos and Faye. The 2018 game follows him and his father through the Norse world after Faye dies and leaves them with one final wish: to scatter her ashes from the highest peak. PlayStation’s official story recap describes the journey as both a dangerous expedition and a test of a strained relationship.
Atreus wants to prove that he can help and survive. Kratos, stern and emotionally guarded, struggles to guide him while keeping his own painful past from shaping the boy’s future. Their relationship gives the adventure its emotional center: the father must teach his son without simply passing on his mistakes.
Spoilers: Is Atreus Loki?
Yes. The ending of God of War (2018) reveals that Atreus is part Giant through Faye, whose Giant identity she had kept secret. He is already part god through Kratos. Faye also gave him the name Loki, connecting Atreus’s identity to the Giants and the wider Norse story. PlayStation’s 2022 official recap recounts the reveal.

- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
So the title “The Boy Who Became a God” is evocative rather than literal: Atreus discovers what he is, rather than undergoing a transformation into a god. His new understanding of his parentage and name is part of the journey’s culmination.
What does “becoming a god” mean to Kratos?
For Kratos, godhood is not a simple source of power or pride. In a 2017 PlayStation Blog interview, game director Cory Barlog described Kratos’s view plainly: “To Kratos, being a god is a disease.” The line reflects a father trying to protect his son from the violence and destructive choices that have marked his own life.

Barlog framed the lesson as something other than a guide to godly power: “Well, it’s not so much Kratos teaching Atreus how to be a god, but how not to make the same mistakes he did.” The full interview with Barlog discusses the creative intent behind this father-and-son arc; it is not a complete account of the plot.
Is this the Atreus from Greek mythology?
No. The article’s Atreus is the fictional character in Sony Santa Monica’s God of War (2018), Kratos and Faye’s son. Ancient Atreus belongs to the Greek mythological House of Atreus, a different figure and tradition. Even ancient genealogies vary: the Perseus Digital Library’s Agamemnon entry records traditions that make Agamemnon either Atreus’s son or his grandson through Pleisthenes.
