“The program can’t start because auapplication.dll is missing from your computer.” The auapplication.dll error identifies an Adobe Audition module, not a Windows system file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- The file is absent from the Adobe Audition folder: repair or reinstall the exact Audition installation through Creative Cloud.
- The file exists, but Windows says “the specified module could not be found”: repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable because a dependency may be missing.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup, migration, or failed installation: reinstall Audition rather than copying an old DLL.
- Windows Security shows the file in quarantine: verify that it came from the genuine Adobe Audition directory before restoring it.
- Audition opens and immediately crashes while the file exists: reset preferences and test without third-party audio or VST plugins.
- Several applications have unrelated missing-file errors: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then investigate system-wide corruption.
- The file is outside an Adobe Audition folder or has no trusted signature: do not restore or run it. Scan the computer and reinstall Audition from Creative Cloud.
Do not download auapplication.dll from a random DLL website or place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A copied file can have the wrong Audition version, architecture, dependencies, or origin.
What auapplication.dll is
auapplication.dll belongs to Adobe Audition. Adobe crash reports show it loaded from Audition’s own installation directory alongside modules such as AuCore.dll, AuUI.dll, and AuBackEnd.dll.
A typical location is:
C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe Audition 2023AuApplication.dll
The exact folder depends on the installed Audition release. The file is not part of Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a hardware driver.

Adobe’s current Audition releases require 64-bit Windows. Older Audition installations and third-party file records may contain 32-bit builds, so do not replace a current module with an old file from another release or computer. Reported Adobe crash records include Audition 2018 and Audition 2023 builds, but there is no complete public Adobe version, size, checksum, or dependency table for every release.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Adobe Audition
This is the most likely solution when auapplication.dll is genuinely missing or damaged.
Check the installation folder
- Close Audition and Creative Cloud.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
text
C:Program FilesAdobe
- Open the folder for the affected Audition release.
- Look for
AuApplication.dll.
If the file is missing, do not create a replacement by downloading one. If it is present, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if available. A file inside the expected Adobe folder is safer evidence than a file found in a Windows directory, but reinstalling remains the cleanest repair.
Reinstall the matching release
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Select All Apps.
- Find Adobe Audition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside Audition.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts. Preserve preferences only if you need them and suspect they are not involved.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Select Install beside the Audition release you need.
If several Audition versions are installed, repair the one that produces the error. Do not mix AuApplication.dll files between Audition CS6, CC 2018, Audition 2023, or another computer.

Success check: Audition opens without the missing-file message, and a new AuApplication.dll appears inside the correct Audition directory.
If Creative Cloud cannot uninstall or install Audition, use Adobe’s official Creative Cloud uninstaller and choose Repair. Reinstall Creative Cloud itself only if the repair fails, then reinstall Audition.
Fix 2: Repair Visual C++ when the DLL exists
Windows can report that a module could not be found even when the named DLL is present. In that case, the loader may be unable to find a dependency required by AuApplication.dll.
A public compatibility report identifies MSVCP140_CODECVT_IDS.dll as a dependency for one Audition release. That does not prove every Audition version uses the same dependency, but it is a reason to repair the official Visual C++ runtime instead of copying an individual runtime DLL.

- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Locate the package whose architecture matches Audition.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Audition.
Microsoft provides separate packages named vc_redist.x64.exe, vc_redist.x86.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. The package architecture must match the application and operating system. Do not remove unrelated Visual C++ versions merely because the error mentions Audition.
If repair is unavailable or fails, install the current supported Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft. Avoid downloading individual MSVCP or VCRUNTIME DLL files.
Success check: the same Audition installation starts without the loader error. If the message remains and AuApplication.dll exists, return to Fix 1 and reinstall Audition.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine or remove an application module after an update or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Adobe Audition or
AuApplication.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its path.
- If the path is the genuine Audition installation directory, scan the computer and confirm the Audition installation came from Creative Cloud.
- Restore the file only when its origin is clear.
- Start Audition.
If the file is unsigned, appears in System32, appears in a temporary folder, or is detected as malware, do not restore it. Remove or quarantine it and reinstall Audition through Creative Cloud. Reinstallation is safer than restoring an unverified DLL.
Success check: the file returns to the Audition directory and Audition launches. If Windows Security quarantines it again, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 4: Reset Audition preferences and test plugins
This applies when AuApplication.dll exists but Audition crashes during startup rather than reporting a genuine missing file.
- Close Audition.
- Hold Shift.
- While holding it, launch Audition.
- Continue holding Shift while it starts.
- Accept the preference-reset prompt if displayed.
Adobe documents this shortcut as a way to recreate Audition preferences. Resetting preferences can remove a damaged configuration that prevents startup, but it does not replace a missing DLL.
If Audition still fails:
- Temporarily move third-party VST or audio plug-ins out of their custom folders.
- Start Audition again.
- If it opens, restore plug-ins one group at a time.
- Identify and update or remove the plug-in that causes the crash.
You can also test from a new local Windows user profile. If Audition works there, the original Windows profile or its application settings may be damaged.
Fix 5: Install Windows updates
Windows updates can repair supporting components and resolve loader problems caused by an outdated system.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Choose Download & install for available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for updates again until none remain.
- Launch Audition.
Windows Update is not a substitute for reinstalling auapplication.dll. Use it alongside the Audition repair when the system is outdated or several applications are failing.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They generally do not recreate an Adobe application DLL, so use them when Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms or multiple unrelated programs fail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Audition again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it cannot complete, repeat the commands after Windows Update finishes and check the exact message. Do not expect these commands to download AuApplication.dll from Adobe.
When manually hunting through repair logs and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed becomes the slow part, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; its repair functions require the full version. Reinstalling Adobe Audition remains the definitive fix when this specific application module is absent.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms point there
A driver is not the normal owner of auapplication.dll. Consider a driver update only if Audition fails after a graphics, audio-interface, or Windows driver change, or if Event Viewer reports a related device fault.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test Audition.
For an audio interface, download the driver only from the hardware manufacturer. Do not uninstall a working driver simply because auapplication.dll is missing.
When checking many audio, chipset, and graphics drivers manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs the driver installation. A driver update will not replace a missing Adobe module, so reinstall Audition if the file itself is absent.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent system change
Use System Restore only when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or other system change and the earlier restore point is known to be usable.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the restore.
System Restore rolls back system settings and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It does not repair a mismatched Audition installation as reliably as reinstalling Audition.

Do not copy the DLL to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not a general storage location for application modules. Copying the file there can create version conflicts, load the wrong architecture, or expose Windows to an untrusted binary.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. AuApplication.dll is an Audition support module loaded by the application, not a documented COM server.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 AuApplication.dll
A registration error does not repair the Audition installation. Use Creative Cloud instead.

The DirectX End-User Runtime supplies legacy DirectX SDK libraries for particular applications. It does not repair the core DirectX runtime or replace AuApplication.dll. Install it only when the error names a specific DirectX component.
.NET repair, Windows Features changes, and driver reinstallation are also conditional remedies. Do not use them as the first response to an Adobe Audition module error.
If Audition still will not start
Collect these details before contacting Adobe support or opening a technical case:
- The exact error text.
- Your Windows version.
- The Audition version shown in Creative Cloud.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The complete path where
AuApplication.dllwas found, if present. - Whether the file has a trusted Adobe digital signature.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- The Event Viewer entry under Windows Logs and Application.
- Whether resetting preferences changed the behavior.
- Whether Audition starts without third-party audio or VST plugins.
- Whether reinstalling Audition created a new copy of the file.
Do not mix files from different Audition releases while testing. The reliable repair boundary is the Adobe installation that owns the module.

FAQ
Is auapplication.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Adobe Audition and normally belongs inside the Audition installation directory.
Can I download auapplication.dll separately?
You should not. A standalone DLL may be malicious, obsolete, the wrong architecture, or missing the dependencies required by your Audition build. Reinstall Audition through Creative Cloud.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The named file may be present while one of its dependencies is absent or damaged. Repair the matching Visual C++ Redistributable, then reinstall Audition if the error continues.
Should I register auapplication.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not a normal repair for this application-support module.
Do I need both 32-bit and 64-bit Visual C++ packages?
Install the architecture required by the Audition application. Do not infer the required package from an old DLL inventory or from another computer.
Will SFC restore auapplication.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while auapplication.dll belongs to Adobe Audition. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, then repair Audition through Creative Cloud.
What if Audition crashes even though the DLL is present?
Reset Audition preferences, test without third-party audio or VST plug-ins, check Event Viewer, and reinstall Audition if the crash persists. A present DLL does not prove that the installation or its dependencies are healthy.
