AV1 Codec Explained: What It Is and How It Affects Live Streaming

AV1 can improve quality at a fixed bitrate or preserve quality with fewer bits, but its encoding demands and platform support determine whether it suits a live stream.

AV1 is a video codec: it compresses video for delivery, with the aim of preserving quality at a lower bitrate than older codecs. For live streaming, that can help when upload bandwidth is limited or when you want better picture quality at a given bitrate—but encoding AV1 can require more computing power, and your encoder, streaming software, platform, and viewers’ devices all affect whether it is practical.

What is the AV1 codec?

AV1 stands for AOMedia Video 1. It is an open video codec with a published bitstream and decoding specification, developed for efficient video delivery. It is not a streaming platform, a resolution, or an automatic quality setting. The Alliance for Open Media describes its goal as high-quality compression with greater efficiency than previous codecs (Alliance for Open Media: AV1 Video Codec).

A codec compresses video into data that can be transmitted over a network or stored in a file. Your streaming encoder uses a codec to create the outgoing video; the platform then ingests and may process that feed for viewers.

How AV1 can affect live-stream quality and bitrate

AV1’s compression efficiency can be useful in either of two ways: you may be able to preserve comparable visual quality with fewer bits, or use a given bitrate to deliver better quality. The result depends on the video content, encoder implementation, settings, and comparison codec; fast motion, fine detail, and other difficult scenes can affect the outcome. There is no universal percentage by which an individual stream’s bitrate will fall.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The often-cited “30% better compression” figure needs context. The Alliance for Open Media presents it while citing Bitmovin’s “Multi-Codec DASH Dataset: An Evaluation of AV1, AVC, HEVC, and VP9”; its feature page does not state a publication year for that result (AV1 Features). Meta’s 2025 technical overview describes AV1 as offering up to 30% better compression than VP9, while also noting increased computational complexity (Meta Engineering AV1 overview). These are comparative claims, not guaranteed savings for every live broadcast.

The trade-off: compression efficiency versus computing power

AV1’s efficiency has a cost: encoding it can be more computationally demanding. A live encoder must finish each frame in time to keep the stream moving, so a setup that handles AV1 for offline video may not necessarily encode it smoothly in real time. Decoding also matters for playback and large-scale delivery. The whole pipeline—encoder hardware, streaming software, ingest service, platform processing, and viewer device—determines whether AV1 works well for a particular broadcast.

YouTube’s AV1 live-stream settings

YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists AV1 as a video codec for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, alongside H.264 and H.265 (HEVC). Its recommendations are specific to YouTube, not universal AV1 requirements. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates on the settings page accessed October 3, 2026 (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

These recommendations do not guarantee identical visual quality across codecs or encoders. Compare results with the same content, resolution, frame rate, and target conditions, and verify that your sustained upload capacity can support the selected bitrate.

Other YouTube encoder settings

  • Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance allows up to 60 fps.
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol and ingest: The cited AV1 guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm your encoder can send AV1 using the protocol and configuration you select.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Therefore, sending AV1 to YouTube does not mean every viewer receives AV1; the broadcaster’s ingest codec and a viewer’s playback codec need not be the same.

AV1 and HDR on YouTube

YouTube’s cited live settings page says AV1 is not supported for HDR and recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR. This is a YouTube-specific ingest limitation, not proof that the AV1 specification itself cannot represent HDR. If HDR is essential to your YouTube workflow, follow the platform’s current HDR guidance and choose the supported codec it specifies.

Choosing between AV1, H.264, and H.265

There is no best codec independent of the platform and setup. Use these decision points before changing an established stream:

  • Available upload bandwidth: Compare the platform’s bitrate recommendations with what your connection can sustain, not just its advertised maximum speed.
  • Encoding performance: Test whether your chosen software and hardware can encode the desired resolution and frame rate in real time.
  • Platform and protocol: Check the destination’s current ingest documentation. YouTube documents AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; that does not establish support on every other service.
  • HDR: For YouTube’s documented RTMP(S) HDR workflow, use H.265 rather than AV1.
  • Viewer delivery: Account for platform transcoding and device decoding; broadcaster codec alone does not determine every viewer’s playback format.
  • Quality comparison: Judge codecs using the same scene, resolution, frame rate, and target bitrate or quality. Codec names alone do not predict the result of a specific encode.

Hardware and software considerations

A graphics card with AV1 hardware encoding may be an option for a local streaming setup, but the presence of AV1 support at the hardware level does not establish that a particular card, software version, resolution, or frame rate will work for your workflow. Check the exact card’s encoder capabilities, your streaming application’s implementation, and the destination’s ingest requirements before buying or rebuilding a setup. The Alliance for Open Media lists AV1-related products and services, including encoding services, but this does not amount to a recommendation of a particular consumer GPU (Alliance for Open Media: Products and services).

Common AV1 live-stream problems

  • The platform does not accept the stream: Confirm the destination supports AV1 for the selected protocol and ingest workflow. A codec available in an encoder is not automatically accepted by every platform.
  • Encoding overload or dropped frames: AV1’s computational complexity can strain a real-time setup. Check encoder load and dropped-frame indicators; reduce the workload or use a supported encoder configuration your hardware can handle.
  • Unstable stream despite the recommended bitrate: A recommendation is not a guarantee that your connection can sustain that rate. Check sustained upload capacity and network stability, then choose a bitrate the connection can reliably carry.
  • HDR does not work with AV1 on YouTube: YouTube’s guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR; use H.265 over RTMP(S) for that documented workflow.
  • Viewers do not appear to receive AV1: YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers. The encoder’s ingest codec does not guarantee the playback codec for each audience member.
  • Unexpected keyframe or cadence issues: Check the encoder’s keyframe interval against YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum.

Keep a YouTube video stream running without a local encoder

If your aim is to keep pre-recorded video playing continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud service that runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. It is separate from choosing AV1 for a live encoder: StreamNeo’s stated product details do not establish a particular AV1 ingest or output setting, so check its current service details if AV1 is a requirement.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plans, then start your free first day.
