AV1 is a video codec: it compresses video so it can be sent to viewers. Its main appeal for streamers is better compression efficiency than older codecs, potentially meaning better picture quality at a given bitrate or less bandwidth for comparable quality. Whether that benefit is worth using depends on your platform, encoder hardware, settings and content. YouTube Live accepts AV1 ingest; support on other platforms must be checked separately.
What AV1 is—and what it is not
AV1, or AOMedia Video 1, is an open video-compression standard developed by the Alliance for Open Media. A codec encodes video for transmission or storage and decodes it for playback. It is not a streaming platform, an encoder application or a guarantee that every service or device supports the format.
The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as optimized for high-resolution content, including 4K and 8K, and for uses such as adaptive streaming and HDR. The specification is freely available, and implementation does not require membership of the alliance. See the Alliance for Open Media’s AV1 information.
What AV1 could mean for stream quality and bandwidth
AV1’s intended advantage is compression efficiency: it can offer a comparable visual result at a lower bitrate, or a better result at the same bitrate. The size of any gain varies with the encoder, its settings, the video content and the codec used for comparison. Fast-moving gameplay, detailed scenes and other content can behave differently, so no single bandwidth-saving figure should be treated as a promise for your stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Alliance for Open Media’s feature page displays a “30% better compression” figure and attributes its supporting results to a Bitmovin multi-codec dataset. That is the alliance’s summary of cited test results, not a universal result for every encoder, stream or codec comparison. The page does not state a publication year for that dataset.
Can you stream AV1 to YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists AV1 as an accepted ingest codec over RTMP/RTMPS. Ingest is the video sent by you to the platform; it is distinct from the formats viewers receive. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. For encrypted delivery to YouTube’s servers, it recommends RTMPS.

The settings below are YouTube’s published AV1 and H.265 ingest guidance, not universal recommendations for other services. YouTube lists CBR for the bitrate encoder, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (which should not exceed four seconds), and supports up to 60 fps in this settings table.
| YouTube ingest resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
At 3840×2160 and above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns for AV1-encoded streams. Its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR live streaming and recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR. Test your stream before an event and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate guidance because platform requirements can change.

Does your PC or GPU need to support AV1?
Encoding and decoding are different capabilities. A device that can decode AV1 for playback is not necessarily able to encode AV1 in real time for a live stream. Real-time encoding is demanding, so check your encoder options and the requirements of your production workload before switching.
OBS documents hardware AV1 encoding on AMD Radeon RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40 and Intel Arc GPU families. These family names do not establish that every particular setup will meet your resolution, frame-rate or workload needs. OBS also notes that software AV1 encoders such as SVT-AV1 and libaom-av1 require high-end CPUs for real-time compression. Hardware encoding moves work to a specialized part of the GPU, but encoder generation and quality vary; the presence of an AV1 hardware encoder alone does not promise a specific result.

Before buying hardware, confirm the exact GPU model and available AV1 encoder in OBS, then test a representative stream at your intended resolution and frame rate while running the game or production software you use. Also confirm that your destination accepts AV1 ingest. An upgrade is relevant if your current system cannot encode the format at the settings you need; the evidence here does not establish a best-value GPU or show that every streamer should upgrade. See OBS’s audio and video formats guide and hardware encoding guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether AV1 is right for your stream
- Destination: Check that the platform accepts AV1 as creator-side ingest. Viewer playback support does not prove that a platform accepts AV1 from streamers.
- Bitrate and picture quality: Compare settings for the actual resolution, frame rate and content you produce. Use your destination’s own bitrate limits rather than assuming YouTube’s guidance applies elsewhere.
- Encoder and workload: Confirm that your hardware or CPU can encode in real time without interfering with gameplay or production. Test before relying on it for an event.
- HDR and format needs: For YouTube Live HDR ingest, AV1 is not supported in the cited guidance; YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC instead.
- Viewer delivery: YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Do not assume another destination handles viewer delivery the same way.
What if your content is a pre-recorded loop, not a live gameplay session?
For a channel that needs an uploaded video or playlist to run continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and the computer at home does not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. Details are at StreamNeo.
