If Windows reports that awresx32.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, identify the old program requesting it before replacing any files.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before repairing Windows, collect these details:
- Which program fails? Check the error window, desktop shortcut, Start menu entry, or Task Manager for the executable name.
- When does the error appear? Does it happen when launching an old fax or document application, immediately after sign-in, or during startup?
- Is the application 32-bit?
awresx32.dllis a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit replacement is not valid. - Was the program recently moved, uninstalled, updated, or restored from backup?
- Did antivirus software quarantine a file? Check Windows Security before downloading anything.
- Are you opening an old
.AWDfax file? The application that opens the file may require several matching fax components, not justawresx32.dll.
The most useful clue is the calling application. A missing DLL error from an old fax viewer requires a different repair from a stale startup entry left behind after the application was removed.
What awresx32.dll is
awresx32.dll is historically described as Resource Executor. It is a Microsoft 32-bit Windows DLL from the Windows 95 and Windows 98-era fax and imaging stack.
It was associated with:
- Windows Fax Viewer
- Microsoft Fax components
- AWD fax-image support
- Older applications that bundled Microsoft fax or imaging functionality
Historical installations placed it in the Windows system directory of the time, but that does not mean current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations should contain it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Related legacy files include:
AWVIEW32.DLLAWCODC32.DLLAWDCXC32.DLLAWDENC32.DLLFAXVIEW.EXE
Those files often worked as a group. Restoring only awresx32.dll can leave the application unable to start because another companion DLL or codec is also missing.
Some older document, graphics, CAD, office, and image-management programs redistributed these Microsoft components. Therefore, the error does not prove that Windows Fax Viewer itself is installed. It may indicate that a third-party legacy application has an incomplete private installation.
Common error messages
Users commonly report messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because awresx32.dll was not found.”
- “The file awresx32.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: awresx32.dll.”
- “Error loading awresx32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because awresx32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot find awresx32.dll.”
- “awresx32.dll could not be located.”
The wording varies by application and Windows version. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by awresx32.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named DLL itself is absent.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application requesting the DLL
This is the safest and most likely fix when only one old application produces the error.
Identify the parent application
If the error appears after clicking a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- Record the executable name and its containing folder.
- Select Open File Location if that option is available.
If the error appears during startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with the old fax, imaging, or document program.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
Do not delete the DLL or shortcut yet. First determine which product owns the executable.
Repair from Windows Settings
For a normally installed application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Repair is not available, use the application’s own installer:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if offered.
- Complete the wizard and restart.
Reinstall from trusted media
If repair fails:
- Back up documents created by the application.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original CD, the vendor’s official installation media, or a known-good organizational installer.
- Launch the application from its newly installed shortcut.
For a legacy program, the correct DLL may need to be beside the application’s executable rather than in a Windows folder. Do not copy it into System32 simply because the error mentions a DLL.
If the program uses a launcher with Repair, Verify files, or Restore installation, use that function instead of manually replacing files.
What success looks like
The repair worked if:
- The application opens without the DLL message.
- Its fax or document viewer loads normally.
- An AWD file opens through the application.
- The same error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the error remains, check the exact executable path again. You may have repaired one application while a different startup entry or older copy is generating the error.

Fix 2: Restore the complete Fax Viewer or AWD component set
If the failing program is Fax Viewer, an old fax utility, or an application that opens .AWD files, restore the complete matching component set from its original installation media.
Do not obtain one loose DLL from a download site. Older fax components can depend on related viewers, codecs, Microsoft Foundation Class files, and other files from the same release.
Use the original source in this order:
- The application’s original installation CD or disk image.
- A verified installation package maintained by your organization.
- The original Windows installation media for the historically compatible Windows release, if the component came from Windows Fax Viewer.
- A supported replacement application or isolated legacy virtual machine when modern Windows cannot run the complete stack.
If the installer has a Custom or Typical setup screen, choose the fax, imaging, or document-viewing feature when appropriate. If it has a Repair option, use that instead of browsing the media and copying individual files.
Why modern Windows may not be enough
awresx32.dll is a 32-bit legacy component. Modern 64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but that does not guarantee compatibility with the entire Windows 95/98-era Fax Viewer stack.
If the application still fails after a complete reinstall:
- Test it in the historically compatible Windows environment used by your organization.
- Use an isolated virtual machine if the files are business-critical.
- Keep the legacy environment away from unnecessary network access.
- Move documents into a modern workflow where possible.
For old AWD files, the practical solution may be to use the original compatible viewer to export or convert them, then store the resulting documents in a modern format.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a legitimate legacy DLL, particularly when the file is old, uncommon, or located inside an application directory.
Recommended Free Tools
To check Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Select the detection associated with the application.
- Review the file path and detection details.
Only restore the file when all of these conditions are true:
- It came from a known, legitimate application installation.
- The file path belongs to the expected application.
- The installer and application source are trusted.
- A current scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
- You are confident the detection is a false positive.
If those conditions are met, use Actions > Restore or Allow on device, depending on what Windows Security displays. Microsoft Defender may detect the file again after restoration. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force an old program to run.

If the file came from a random DLL website, do not restore it. Remove the download and obtain the application again from its original installer.
Fix 4: Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected files belonging to the Windows version currently installed. They are useful when several Windows features are malfunctioning, but they usually will not recreate an obsolete, application-private Windows 95 DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run DISM first:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this repair sequence through its System File Checker guidance.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it either found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it again once. If awresx32.dll is still missing from one old application’s directory, reinstall that application rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM and SFC does not show which files changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after an update, uninstall, driver installation, or registry change and a suitable restore point exists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding. Microsoft provides additional instructions in its System Restore guide.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent application.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when a device change preceded the error
A driver is not the normal source of awresx32.dll, and reinstalling a graphics, printer, or fax driver will not replace this legacy application DLL. Check drivers only when the error started immediately after installing hardware software or when the affected application depends on a newly changed device.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Printers, Imaging devices, Display adapters, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device only when you have a trusted replacement package or a clear rollback target.
For a printer or fax device, download the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not expect that process to install awresx32.dll.

When identifying which of many device drivers is stale is taking longer than the application repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; its free scan identifies the reported problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update is relevant only when the device change actually caused the failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A .dll extension alone does not mean a file should be registered.
awresx32.dll is a legacy resource and fax component. Registering it is generally not an appropriate repair and can produce another error, including an entry-point failure.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s instructions specifically identify that DLL as a self-registering component. The command format is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsregsvr32 "C:fullpathtocomponent.dll"
For a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, a vendor may require the 32-bit registration utility:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:fullpathtocomponent.dll"
Do not run either command against awresx32.dll merely because Windows says it is missing.
Do not download awresx32.dll from random websites
Standalone DLL download sites are risky because the file may be:
- Modified to contain malware.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A different historical build.
- Missing companion files.
- Unsuitable for the application that requested it.
A genuine Microsoft origin does not make every copy found online trustworthy. There is no current Microsoft redistributable package dedicated to this standalone DLL.

Do not replace awresx32.dll to satisfy a shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry for software that no longer exists.
If the error persists after reinstalling
Check the exact application path and dependency chain.
A reinstall can fail when:
- The installer was run without administrative rights.
- The application was installed into a different directory than expected.
- Antivirus removed a companion file.
- A 32-bit application is being given a 64-bit DLL.
- The named DLL exists, but another dependency is missing.
- The program is too old for the current Windows environment.
Use the application’s own logs, if available, and inspect the folder beside its executable. A dependency-analysis tool can help identify the module that prevents loading, but interpret its results carefully. “Module not found” does not always identify the first missing file in the chain.
If the program is essential and cannot run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, use an isolated compatible legacy environment or migrate the workflow. For AWD files, preserve the originals and avoid repeatedly modifying them while testing viewers.
FAQ
Is awresx32.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL?
Not normally. Its documented origin is the Windows 95/98-era Microsoft Fax and Fax Viewer stack. Current Windows installations should not be assumed to contain it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is `awresx32.dll malware?
The filename belongs to a genuine historical Microsoft component, but any individual copy can be altered or placed in an unsafe location. Verify its source and scan the parent application instead of trusting the filename alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no established connection between awresx32.dll and those runtime packages. Install them only when the affected application’s own documentation requires them.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. The correct copy may belong beside a 32-bit application’s executable, and the application may require several matching files. Copying it into a Windows directory can create version conflicts and security problems.
Can SFC restore awresx32.dll?
Only if the file is part of the installed Windows component store. SFC is unlikely to restore an obsolete, application-private DLL from a Windows 95-era fax package.
Why does an AWD file fail to open?
The viewer may be missing the complete AWD and fax dependency set. Reinstall the application that originally opened the file, or use a compatible legacy environment to access and migrate the documents.
What is the correct first step?
Identify the executable requesting the DLL, then repair or reinstall that application from trusted original media. That approach is safer and more reliable than downloading a replacement DLL.
