If your AWS Elemental MediaLive bill is higher than expected, compare the invoice period with the channels’ actual states and configurations before assuming that a YouTube stream—or a stopped-looking workflow—was free. MediaLive can charge for idle channels, certain idle push inputs, configured outputs on running channels even when paused, and inputs attached to running channels even when inactive. The cause of your increase is account-specific, so use the checks below to identify which resources and services were billed.
Start with the invoice period and channel history
Write down the exact dates covered by the bill, then compare them with channel state history and any deployment changes in that interval. MediaLive channel states include Idle, Recovering, Running, Starting, and Stopping. Channel state changes can also be emitted as CloudWatch events. See AWS’s channel and multiplex state documentation.
Do not infer billable status only from whether viewers could see a live picture. Check the relevant resource states and configuration for the billed hours; an apparently inactive stream does not establish that every MediaLive resource was non-billable.
Check channels and inputs, including idle resources
- Idle channels: AWS describes a charge for each channel that is not running. A channel that was not actively streaming may therefore still have incurred an idle-channel charge.
- Push inputs: An unattached push input, or one attached to a channel that is not running, can incur an idle push-input charge. Do not assume every idle input is treated alike: AWS says idle pull inputs are not charged.
- Inputs on running channels: Each input attached to a running channel can be charged, including an input that is not active or receiving content at that moment.
Inventory every channel and input, then map its state and attachment over the invoice dates. AWS explains these cases in Pricing in MediaLive.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Count outputs on running channels—even paused ones
Review every output configured in each running channel, not just outputs that were delivering a visible stream. AWS says each configured output in a running channel is charged, and pausing an output does not stop that charge. As AWS puts it: “The charge applies even if the output has been paused by the user or by Elemental Live.”
- Count configured outputs and confirm their output types, codecs, and frame rates.
- Check for A/B forensic video watermarking. In supported output groups, AWS bills each A/B variant as a separate output.
- Compare the output count and type with what the channel actually needs; do not remove outputs without confirming the impact on your workflow.
Verify input specifications against the actual source
MediaLive uses the configured input specification—including codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate—for billing and resource allocation. AWS’s example says an HD selection is charged as HD even if the actual inputs are SD. In other words, the specification can affect the billed input tier even when the incoming video is lower resolution.

Compare the selected settings with the most resource-intensive source characteristics your channel must handle. An unnecessarily high tier may increase the input charge, but setting specifications too low can affect resource allocation and output quality. Make a technically appropriate correction rather than choosing the lowest option by default. AWS’s input specification settings guide explains the fields; its concise rule is: “You pay for the option that you specify.”
Review add-ons, channel class, and reservations
Add-ons and channel class
Inspect enabled channel add-ons and the channel class for the billed period. AWS documents add-on charges on running channels and different rates for standard two-pipeline and single-pipeline channel classes. Link inputs use a separate pricing model. Check current rates for your Region and configuration before estimating the effect of a change.

Reservations
If you have MediaLive input or output reservations, check that each reservation matches the channel’s Region and relevant input or output attributes. Reservation minutes apply only to matching items; the pool is replenished monthly and unused minutes do not carry forward. See AWS’s guidance on how input and output reservations work and working with reservations.
Separate MediaLive from the rest of the AWS workflow
A YouTube destination does not establish that YouTube generated an AWS charge. Check the invoice’s service breakdown before attributing the increase to MediaLive: a streaming workflow may also use services such as MediaPackage or CloudFront, which appear as separate billing categories.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide includes a one-hour example for US East (N. Virginia), based on standard pricing and a specific HD AVC input plus four SD AVC outputs: MediaLive input and outputs are estimated at $1.99 per hour in the guide version accessed in 2026. That is an example for those assumptions, not a rate estimate for your channel. Region, configuration, duration, output profile, and other services all matter; AWS notes that prices can change. See Plan your deployment — Live Streaming on AWS.

- Fix the interval: Note the invoice start and end dates, Region, and any channel or deployment changes during that period.
- Match states to hours: For each channel, identify when it was Running, Idle, Starting, Stopping, or Recovering, using state history and available CloudWatch events.
- Inventory inputs: Record each input’s type, attachment, and relevant state over the interval. Distinguish idle push inputs from idle pull inputs.
- Inventory outputs: Count all configured outputs on running channels, including paused outputs and separately billed A/B watermark variants where applicable.
- Compare input specifications: Check configured codec, resolution, and maximum bitrate against the sources the channel needs to support.
- Review features and class: Check enabled add-ons, channel class, and whether a link input uses its separate pricing model.
- Match reservations: Verify Region and input/output attributes, then check how many reservation minutes were applied and whether unused monthly minutes expired.
- Reconcile AWS services: Compare MediaLive line items with any MediaPackage, CloudFront, or other service charges in the same workflow.
This comparison can narrow down the cause, but it cannot determine it without your invoice usage details, channel configuration, state history, and the services in your workflow.

Common explanations and what to do next
- The channel looked stopped, but charges continued: Check for idle-channel charges and idle push inputs; verify the actual resource state and input attachment rather than relying on the visible stream.
- An output was paused but the total stayed high: If its channel was running and the output remained configured, pausing alone does not end the output charge. Review whether the output should remain configured.
- An input was not receiving video: If it remained attached to a running channel, it may still count as an input. Check attachment and channel state for the billed hours.
- The source was SD but the input charge seemed high: Compare the configured input specification with the source. A higher selected tier can be billed even when actual input is lower resolution.
- The MediaLive total does not explain the AWS bill: Inspect separate service line items, especially any other services used to package or deliver the stream.
- A reservation did not reduce the expected charges: Confirm that the Region and input/output attributes match; only matching usage draws from the reservation pool.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service to consider—not a diagnosis or billing fix for an existing MediaLive deployment. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
