Idle means your AWS Elemental MediaLive channel is not running. To start it, open Channels in the MediaLive console, select the intended channel, and choose Start. First confirm that the channel is attached to the right, ready input and that its output uses the stream URL and key currently shown for your YouTube stream. Then wait for MediaLive to reach Running and check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video. For a scheduled YouTube event, you may also need to select Go live there.
What an idle MediaLive channel means
AWS defines the Idle state as “The channel isn’t running.” It is a state, not by itself an error or an explanation of why the channel is idle. AWS says channels must be started manually; automatic startup applies only when an already-running channel is trying to recover from a failure. The channel’s state alone cannot identify an account-specific problem. If Start does not work or the channel will not progress, inspect its details, alerts, logs, input, schedule, and output configuration.
Before you start: check the input and YouTube destination
Confirm the input is ready
Make sure the channel is attached to the intended input. If it uses a push input, the source must already be pushing to MediaLive before the channel starts. If there are multiple inputs, check the schedule and confirm which input the channel will use; AWS recommends using the schedule to select inputs. An RTMP push input is the source-to-MediaLive connection, not the MediaLive-to-YouTube output. For a push input, the upstream source attempts delivery to the MediaLive endpoint; it pauses while the channel is not running and resumes when the channel starts. Copy the destination from the intended YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select or create the stream you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it. If it is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update MediaLive’s destination with the replacement key. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
In MediaLive’s output destination, compare the protocol and URL with YouTube’s current values, then enter the corresponding stream name/key in the separate stream-name field. Do not rely on a hard-coded URL or key copied from another event. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder and destination support it; use the matching protocol and URL shown for your stream. MediaLive’s RTMP output settings also include username and a Systems Manager Parameter Store password reference for destinations that require authentication. Match encoding settings to the source
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 and constant bitrate encoding, with a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and no more than 4 seconds. Recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose the applicable value in YouTube’s current settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal. Match the output to the source and the requirements for the specific stream.
Start the channel and verify the YouTube event
- In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, open Channels.
- Select the intended channel. Check its state and details, and verify that its input and output are configured for the source and YouTube stream you want.
- Confirm the source is ready. For a push input, ensure it is sending; if the channel has multiple inputs, verify the schedule and selected input.
- Choose Start.
- Watch the channel state. It should move from Starting to Running. AWS says most AWS Cloud channels start in 3 minutes or less; up to 10 minutes can still be normal. Configuration complexity and EC2 instance size are among the factors that affect startup time.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check for the incoming-video preview. For a scheduled stream, select Go live after the preview appears. Starting MediaLive does not necessarily publish every scheduled YouTube event automatically.
Troubleshoot by what you see
The channel remains Idle
Confirm that you selected the correct channel and chose Start. Check the channel details, alerts, and logs. Idle itself does not reveal whether the issue is a missed action, authorization, configuration, or another account-specific cause.

The channel is Starting for longer than expected
Allow for AWS’s stated startup window: most AWS Cloud channels start in 3 minutes or less, and up to 10 minutes can be normal. If it remains Starting beyond that, review the channel’s actual details, alerts, and logs rather than assuming a particular cause.
The channel is Running, but the video is missing or wrong
A Running state does not prove that the intended content is reaching the encoder. Check that the source is sending, that the right input is attached or selected by the schedule, and that the source contains the expected video.

YouTube has no incoming preview
Compare YouTube’s current stream URL and key with MediaLive’s output destination URL and stream name/key. Verify that the protocol matches (RTMP or RTMPS) and that the key belongs to the intended YouTube stream. If the key was compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the MediaLive destination.
The preview appears, but the scheduled event is not live
For a scheduled event, check its status in Live Control Room and choose Go live after the preview appears.

You are checking whether Idle is free
It is not safe to assume so. AWS documents charges for idle channels, and an attached push input can also incur idle input charges while its channel is stopped. Check the current AWS pricing for your region and the actual channel and input configuration; the state name alone does not establish your bill. See AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.
