AWS Elemental MediaLive can encode a live source in the cloud and send configured outputs toward YouTube, but it is not a turnkey 24/7 video playlist service. You must supply and manage the source, configure the channel and RTMP destinations, plan for interruptions, and estimate charges from the resources your workflow uses. For a simpler way to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative: it runs in the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.
What MediaLive does—and what it does not
MediaLive is a managed cloud encoding service. It processes an input source into configured live outputs; it is not, by itself, a complete always-on channel operation or a ready-made YouTube playlist scheduler. A channel can have multiple inputs attached, but it ingests from one at a time. Its schedule can switch between inputs and trigger actions such as image overlays. AWS documents that each channel has one schedule associated with it. See AWS’s channel workflow documentation.
That distinction matters for continuous programming. You need a source plan that remains valid for the period you intend to broadcast, plus a configured output path to YouTube. MediaLive can encode content and schedule input changes, but those capabilities alone do not establish a turnkey workflow for looping a folder of videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream.
Can MediaLive keep a YouTube channel live 24/7?
It can be part of a continuous workflow if you provide an appropriate ongoing source and configure the channel and destination correctly. The input type determines what MediaLive can ingest: AWS’s input matrix lists MP4 and TS file inputs as VOD-only, while RTMP Pull can be used for either live or VOD. Do not assume that an arbitrary uploaded file can simply be set to repeat indefinitely. Check the intended input against AWS’s live-versus-file input matrix and design the source or switching workflow around that support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a channel that needs scheduled program changes, MediaLive can switch among attached inputs. That is useful when the sources and switching plan are already available; it does not remove the need to operate those sources or prove that a VOD playlist will loop automatically.
How the YouTube output is configured
MediaLive’s RTMP destination setup uses generic destination fields: protocol, address, port, application name, and stream name or key. The endpoint and key must come from the downstream platform. AWS’s instructions describe the MediaLive side, not YouTube’s current ingest requirements, so verify the current YouTube Live settings separately before configuring a production channel.

- Choose the channel pipeline arrangement. A standard MediaLive channel uses two destinations; a single-pipeline channel uses one. The destination count must match the pipeline arrangement and the downstream configuration. See AWS’s RTMP destination instructions.
- Create an RTMP output group. AWS notes that an RTMP output group has one output by default. Add or configure outputs to match the destinations needed for the selected channel arrangement.
- Enter the platform-provided destination values. Populate the protocol, address, port, application name, and stream name or key using the current details supplied by YouTube. Do not substitute a guessed endpoint or reuse a key without confirming the channel’s current YouTube setup.
- Start and verify the channel and downstream stream. Confirm that MediaLive is encoding the intended source and that YouTube is receiving it. The AWS configuration documentation does not establish YouTube’s current ingest requirements, so use YouTube’s current guidance for platform-specific settings.
Resilience: what two pipelines protect
A standard channel’s two independent MediaLive pipelines process identical content and provide resilience within MediaLive. That benefit depends on the source and destination sides also being prepared for the two paths. It is not a guarantee that every component—from source network through YouTube—will remain available, and it is not an end-to-end availability commitment from YouTube. AWS describes the channel model and its pipeline behavior in the channel workflow documentation.
Source-loss behavior also needs deliberate configuration. When video input is lost, MediaLive can encode replacement content. For RTMP output groups, the configured behavior can instead pause delivery; in that pause behavior, the underlying RTMP connection remains open. This is a response to a source-loss condition, not automatic restoration of the missing source. See AWS’s guidance on handling loss of video input.

How much does an always-on MediaLive channel cost?
There is no single useful always-on price without a specific configuration and AWS region. MediaLive billing depends on resource states and the inputs, outputs, codecs, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, channel class, and add-on features you configure. AWS’s billing guide says there is no separate channel charge while a channel is running, but inputs and outputs are charged. A configured output can remain billable while paused if its channel is running; idle channels and unattached or idle push inputs have their own billing rules, while idle pull inputs are not charged. Consult the MediaLive billing guide for the applicable resource behavior.
AWS offers on-demand, reserved, and discounted pricing. On-demand charges for running inputs, outputs, and add-on features, with resource duration rounded up by the minute and a 10-minute minimum. AWS’s pricing page advertises up to 75% savings versus on-demand for its 12-month reserved pricing offer; that is an advertised maximum, not a forecast or guaranteed saving for a particular channel. Check current rates and regional availability on AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing, or use the AWS pricing calculator with the exact workload.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide includes an example for a one-hour event, 1,000 viewers, and a US East (N. Virginia) deployment. It includes packaging and distribution services as well as MediaLive, so it is not a MediaLive-only estimate or a bill for an always-on YouTube channel. Its total should not be used as a direct estimate for this workflow.

MediaLive is a cloud encoding option whose costs follow configured, running resources. AWS positions on-premises Elemental appliances for production facilities or remote venues where cloud latency or connectivity is unacceptable. That is an alternative operating model, not a required MediaLive accessory. Compare the options using equivalent workload, redundancy, and distribution assumptions rather than treating an appliance and cloud resource charges as directly interchangeable. AWS outlines the categories in its Elemental and MediaLive comparison and MediaLive FAQ.

When MediaLive is a good fit
- You already operate a continuous live source or a set of inputs that can be switched on a schedule.
- You need managed cloud encoding and can configure and monitor the source, channel, outputs, and downstream destination.
- Your team can model variable per-resource billing for its actual settings and region.
- You need MediaLive’s pipeline redundancy and can provision compatible source and destination paths for it.
When another approach may be simpler
If the goal is specifically to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, compare MediaLive with a service built around that workflow before investing in input and output orchestration. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or send to other platforms. It is the simpler first option to try for this use case: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It also includes 24/7 looping, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
