Choose MediaLive when cloud processing is a requirement

What 24/7 operation requires beyond the encoder
Think of the broadcast as a chain: source availability, encoder or cloud channel, power, network path, YouTube ingest, alerting, and human or automated recovery. Redundancy in one link does not guarantee the others. A local OBS machine can lose power or connectivity; a cloud service can still depend on its configured inputs and the path to YouTube. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and recommends a tested backup encoder. YouTube: Streaming tips
- Plan for upload capacity. YouTube recommends outbound bandwidth sufficient for the primary stream plus the backup stream plus 20% headroom. Calculate using the actual configured bitrates and upload capacity, not download speed.
- Preview and monitor. YouTube advises checking the preview in Live Control Room and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
- Test failover. YouTube’s guidance suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup. Adapt the test to your setup and verify the result before relying on it.
- Keep a recovery path. Decide who or what detects a stalled stream, how the source and encoder will restart, and how the stream will be checked after recovery.
YouTube’s operating recommendations are framed around streaming events, but they are useful practices for continuous channels too. For an OBS setup, an uninterruptible power supply can bridge some brief interruptions for the computer and network equipment; it does not fix an internet outage, a long blackout, or an encoder failure.

Cost: compare the whole operating setup
OBS has no software fee, but not zero operating cost
OBS itself is free and open source. Budget separately for the streaming computer, electricity, internet connectivity, any backup equipment, and the time spent monitoring and recovering a local setup. The total depends on equipment and operating conditions; the available sources do not establish a universal figure.
MediaLive charges for running AWS resources
AWS bills MediaLive based on running inputs, outputs, and add-ons. Its pricing page says usage duration is rounded up to the nearest minute after a 10-minute minimum, and that charges continue while a channel is running even when inputs receive no content and outputs produce none. Actual costs vary by region and configuration.

Virginia) example of a standard channel with two HD HEVC inputs, five AVC outputs, and advanced audio at $3.942 per hour. The same page shows a 12-month reserved example at $0.78 per hour and $564.12 per 30-day month. These are configuration-specific examples, not an apples-to-apples comparison with OBS. AWS says eligible resource usage under its stated terms may save up to 75% with a 12-month reserved commitment; this is not a universal savings guarantee. Check channel eligibility first
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to its encoder guide. Confirm access before building a 24/7 workflow. YouTube’s encoder guide

Connect and test your encoder
- Set up the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, share it, or put it in a public recording.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the streaming settings. For MediaLive, configure the AWS channel’s inputs and outputs for the intended YouTube ingest workflow. Exact AWS console labels and channel configuration depend on the chosen setup; consult the current AWS service documentation rather than assuming an OBS-style desktop form.
- Start early and inspect the preview. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. For continuous operation, use a comparable preflight window when making changes: confirm that Live Control Room receives the picture and sound before relying on the stream.
- Check bandwidth and quality. Confirm available upload capacity against the primary and backup bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, or an unstable connection.
- Test the backup and recovery procedure. Follow YouTube’s failover guidance in a controlled test, then verify the viewer-facing player changes to the backup as intended. Record how to restore the primary path.
- Monitor continuously. Check both audio and video quality; a connected encoder alone does not confirm a healthy viewer experience.
YouTube policy, copyright, and long-stream archives
Encoder choice does not grant rights to the video or audio being streamed. Use material you own or are licensed to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current copyright and livestream policies before leaving a channel unattended. Replaying material continuously does not make it original or establish that it qualifies for monetization; eligibility and enforcement depend on YouTube’s current policies and the channel’s content. No particular reused-content outcome can be inferred from choosing OBS or MediaLive.
YouTube’s cited encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour event will be archived as one complete recording. If a full-day VOD matters, verify the current Live Control Room behavior and plan separate recording or archive handling rather than assuming a single complete replay.
