AWS Elemental MediaPackage is a live origin and just-in-time packager: an upstream encoder sends it a live stream, and MediaPackage packages that stream for downstream playback. It is not documented as the component that schedules or plays the file. In either design, YouTube ingest is a separate part of the pipeline that you must validate.
Which product actually plays the prerecorded video?
For a prerecorded YouTube live channel, distinguish playout—reading and repeating the file—from packaging and delivery. The key difference is that Wowza documents file-to-live workflows, while MediaPackage expects a live input from an upstream encoder.

For an AWS design, MediaPackage may be one downstream component, but first select the upstream playout/encoding component that turns the file into a live feed. Then determine how that output will reach YouTube. Do not treat a MediaPackage origin endpoint as interchangeable with YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
How does Wowza handle looping a file?
Wowza Streaming Engine: server-side VOD publisher
Wowza’s current instructions, updated September 2, 2026, describe using ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher to publish a VOD file as live content. Once enabled, the file loops until the publication is terminated. The documented source formats include MP4, MP3, and M3U8.

The guide exposes controls for playlist repeat, publish duration, repeated publication, pause time, source stream, and playback speed. Those are operational controls, not evidence that Wowza Streaming Engine automatically handles every part of a 24/7 YouTube channel. You remain responsible for configuring and maintaining the server, arranging file availability, monitoring publication, and implementing the destination path.
Wowza also documents a StreamPublisher module for scheduled streams and playlists. Scheduling and server-side publishing are separate from the basic repeat behavior; verify the current applicable guide and product setup rather than assuming a particular scheduling feature or edition.

Wowza Video: hosted-file workflow
The legacy Wowza Video guide describes streaming a hosted file through a transcoder, with looping and scheduled-start controls. It says the file can be hosted on a web server, Google Storage, or Amazon S3. Because the guide is labeled “Legacy” and was updated February 8, 2024, check that this workflow is currently available to your account before building around it. Continuous looping overrides idle timeout; stop the transcoder when it is no longer needed to avoid continued charges.
What does MediaPackage contribute to an AWS pipeline?
MediaPackage v2 receives live HLS from an upstream encoder, such as AWS Elemental MediaLive, and exposes packaged output through an origin endpoint. Its live-flow documentation describes redundancy between ingest URLs and resource scaling. That is a live-input and packaging workflow, not a file-playout workflow. MediaPackage v2 lists HLS and CMAF as supported live input types. AWS’s supported-input guide says an input must contain at least one video track and specifies supported container, codec, and other input constraints. Check those constraints against the output of the encoder you choose; compatibility with MediaPackage alone does not establish compatibility with YouTube. AWS’s getting-started model likewise separates the encoder that sends content into a channel from the endpoint that provides output for players or downstream CDNs. Therefore, add MediaPackage when your architecture needs its origin/packaging role—not as a substitute for a component that reads and loops a file.

How do you get the live output to YouTube?
YouTube’s encoder workflow has its own stream setup and ingest requirements. Confirm the live-stream setup and ingest mode for the specific channel before deployment, and use YouTube’s current encoder instructions rather than assuming that a MediaPackage endpoint is a YouTube destination. AWS published an example on April 14, 2021, for sending 4K/HDR live video to YouTube using AWS Elemental Live or MediaLive via HLS ingest. That example describes an HLS output group with a muxed MPEG-2 transport stream, H.264 or HEVC video, and AAC audio. Treat it as a dated configuration example—not proof that every MediaPackage pipeline or current YouTube account accepts the same arrangement. Choose an architecture by the work you need it to do

What must be planned beyond the product names?
Neither product name alone defines a complete 24/7 channel. Map the whole path before launch:
- File storage: Decide where source media lives and how the playout component can access it continuously.
- Playout and encoding: Identify the component that reads the file, repeats or schedules it, and generates a live output.
- Packaging and delivery: Add MediaPackage only if you need its live origin/packaging role; identify the actual destination for its output.
- YouTube ingest: Verify the account’s current live setup and compatible ingest route independently.
- Operations: Assign responsibility for monitoring, credentials, restart behavior, file changes, and starting and stopping services. The vendor documentation cited here does not provide a complete head-to-head operational assessment.
- Lifecycle and cost: Decide what should happen after interruption and when services should stop. Model runtime, transcoding, storage, bandwidth, and delivery for your region and usage; the cited material does not establish like-for-like current total costs.
How should you budget for the two approaches?
There is no supported apples-to-apples total-cost figure for MediaPackage and Wowza here. Your estimate depends on the selected services and plans, region, runtime, storage, encoding, data transfer, and viewing demand. In particular, the Wowza Video legacy guide warns that continuous looping can keep its transcoder running and accruing charges until someone stops it. Build a usage estimate around the actual architecture and verify current prices before committing.
