AYANEO launched the Pocket S on April 26, 2024, with a Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 platform and a $399 presale starting price for the 1080p model. That was a limited launch offer, not a permanent retail price. AYANEO’s current store listings show the 1080p Pocket S at $559 and the 1440p Advance Edition at $589, both marked sold out when checked in August 2026.
The Pocket S remains an unusually capable Android handheld on paper, but its value depends on finding one below current official pricing and accepting Android’s setup work, uncertain long-term support, and configuration differences.

These specifications come from AYANEO’s official product page. Wireless speed depends on the compatible router and network environment, while the advertised 40W charging capability requires a suitable USB-C PD charger.

AYANEO describes the G3x Gen 2 as an eight-core Kryo design with a 1+4+3 arrangement and an Adreno A32 GPU. Its stated maximum large-core clock is up to 3.36GHz, GPU clock up to 1GHz, and Pocket S performance output up to 15W. Those are platform and manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every game will sustain those figures.

The chip is related to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-class technology, but devices do not perform identically. Cooling capacity, firmware, power mode, emulator version, graphics backend and thermal limits all affect sustained results. AYANEO’s claims of roughly 30% CPU improvement and about double the GPU performance over the previous G3x generation should be read as company or Qualcomm-linked comparisons, not independent universal results.
AYANEO reports an AnTuTu score of approximately 1,690,726 for a 16GB/1TB unit and a 3DMark Wild Life Extreme score of approximately 4,382. The AnTuTu result used AnTuTu V10.2.4 in AYANEO’s own test environment, so it is best treated as a manufacturer-reported reference rather than an expected score for every configuration. 1080p or 1440p: which Pocket S makes sense?

The 1440p screen does not make games run faster. Android games, emulators and streamed content may render internally below 1440p and then scale to the panel. Choose the Advance Edition for image sharpness and UI clarity, not an expectation of higher frame rates.

AYANEO’s launch article records the original prices as limited-quantity presale starting points: $399 for 1080p and $439 for 1440p. It does not establish that every $399 unit had one universal RAM and storage combination, so buyers should match any listing to its exact configuration.
What can it realistically play?
Android games
The Pocket S is intended for native Android games, including demanding titles. Results vary with each game’s graphics settings, controller support, renderer, resolution and thermal mode. Games designed around touch controls may require remapping or an overlay rather than working like a console gamepad.
Retro emulation
8-bit and 16-bit systems are a trivial workload for hardware of this class. PlayStation 1, Dreamcast and PSP are appropriate targets, although emulator settings still matter. GameCube, Wii and PlayStation 2 can be strong use cases, but compatibility remains game-by-game: one title may run well while another needs a different renderer, frame-skip setting or speed limit.

A fast chip does not mean perfect emulation, and it does not guarantee that every Switch or other modern-console title will work. AYANEO’s game database does not supply game resources; users must provide legally obtained games and configure their own apps, as explained on the official product page.

Cloud services and PC or console remote play depend more on host hardware, service compatibility, router quality and network latency than on the G3x Gen 2 alone. A congested Wi‑Fi network can produce lag even when the handheld has ample processing power.
What the original $399 deal actually meant
The Pocket S was announced in advance of launch during AYANEO’s February 6, 2024 sharing session and officially launched on April 26, 2024. AYANEO expected 1440p units to ship in mid-May 2024 and 1080p units in late June 2024. Those dates and prices were launch terms, not a promise of ongoing inventory.

“Unbeatable” was promotional wording. The $399 figure identified a limited presale entry point; higher memory and storage configurations cost more, and the listing did not represent a guaranteed current retail offer.

AYANEO’s store index showed the Pocket S 1080p Edition at $559 and the 1440p Advance Edition at $589, with both marked sold out when checked in August 2026 (store index). A separate 1080p product page displayed $769 with selectable configurations, so that figure should be treated as a storefront or configuration-specific price rather than a universal Pocket S price (product page).

Strengths and limitations
Why the hardware is appealing
- High-end Android performance in a 350g handheld.
- Hall-effect sticks and triggers designed to avoid conventional potentiometer wear.
- 6,000mAh battery, microSD expansion and USB-C display output.
- Premium metal-frame design and console-style integrated controls.
- Multiple RAM and storage options, including 16GB/1TB.
- Fingerprint reader, six-axis gyroscope and linear vibration motor.
What should give buyers pause
- Current official prices are substantially above the original presale and the listings were sold out.
- Android requires emulator setup, per-game mapping and occasional troubleshooting.
- Peak benchmark results do not establish fan noise, heat-soak performance or battery life.
- The charger is omitted, and 128GB can fill quickly with games, emulator assets and caches.
- Official pages do not establish update longevity, repairability, stick-drift rates, country-specific warranty response or long-term battery health.

Verdict
The AYANEO Pocket S was a notable 2024 Android handheld launch: the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, strong controls, expandable storage and compact 6-inch design make it attractive for Android gaming, emulation and streaming. But $399 was a historical 1080p presale starting price, not its current normal cost. At $559–$589 official listing prices—and with stock shown as sold out—the Pocket S makes sense mainly at a meaningful discount or when its specific design and controls matter more than the newest platform or best performance per dollar.
