If you mainly need to loop prerecorded videos on YouTube, start with a managed streaming service; if you need control over the operating system, encoder, and network setup, compare self-managed virtual machines such as Amazon EC2, Google Cloud Compute Engine, and Hetzner Cloud Servers. StreamNeo is the first option to consider for a YouTube-only prerecorded stream: it runs in the cloud, accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day. An Azure VM is not a managed channel: you configure, maintain, and recover the encoder yourself.
Choose by workload, not by cloud brand
“Always on” is an operating goal, not a property guaranteed by choosing a cloud provider. The right alternative depends on whether you are broadcasting a live production or repeatedly playing prerecorded videos, and how much control and operational work you want.
- Prerecorded videos in a continuous loop: Consider a purpose-built managed service such as StreamNeo or Gyre. These are not interchangeable with general-purpose VMs; check each service’s current terms and capabilities.
- Live production or custom encoder workflow: Use a VM such as EC2, Compute Engine, or Hetzner Cloud Server if you are prepared to install and operate the encoder. OBS is encoder software, not a hosting service.
- Broadcast-grade live processing: AWS Elemental MediaLive is a managed processing service, distinct from EC2 and from a basic VM encoder.
YouTube distinguishes webcam, mobile-device, and encoder-based streaming. Its encoder guidance describes software and hardware encoders for use cases such as gameplay, screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, and multi-camera production. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and encoder settings and bitrates.
Compare the alternatives
The options below solve different problems. A VM gives you a place to run your own encoder; a managed service takes on part of the streaming operation. Do not compare a VM’s compute price with a managed service as though they were the same product.

| Option | What it is | Best fit | What you still need to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Managed cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube | Continuous prerecorded-video streams when you do not want a computer or VM running at home | It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. One slot includes a stream, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, support, and 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. |
| Gyre | Managed cloud tool for continuous streams of prerecorded videos | A channel that loops content from an existing library and wants to avoid operating a dedicated PC or VM | YouTube’s encoder directory describes the use case; verify current pricing and product terms directly. Directory inclusion does not establish YouTube endorsement. |
| Azure Virtual Machines | General-purpose hosted VM | You want Azure integration or control over the operating system and encoder | You configure and patch the VM, install and monitor the encoder, and plan networking, restart behavior, credentials, and recovery. Compute, disks, networking, and data transfer all affect cost. |
| Amazon EC2 | General-purpose hosted VM | You want to host a self-managed encoder on AWS | You still select and operate the compute instance. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a separate managed broadcast product. No like-for-like current all-in price is established here. |
| Google Cloud Compute Engine | General-purpose hosted VM | You want Google Cloud infrastructure for a self-managed encoder | Machine choice, network setup, and cost depend on the stream workload. Google identifies media streaming and transcoding as workload areas, but that does not establish a specific VM configuration. |
| Hetzner Cloud Server | Hosted cloud VM | You are willing to compare another provider and its contract terms | Its SLA concerns Cloud Server availability, not end-to-end YouTube stream continuity; exclusions and credit remedies apply. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive | Managed live video processing | A production needs broadcast-grade live processing | It has a different operating and cost model from a basic VM. YouTube’s directory describes support up to 4Kp60 HEVC; confirm current configuration and charges. |
| OBS | Open-source recording and live-streaming software | You want to operate an encoder yourself on a local computer or VM | OBS is not hosting. You provide the machine, bandwidth, monitoring, and restart or recovery plan; VM sizing must be validated against the chosen encoder settings and workload. |
YouTube lists Gyre, OBS, and AWS Elemental MediaLive in its verified encoder directory. That listing describes product categories; it is not a comparative performance test or a price comparison.
What running the encoder on a VM requires
A VM is infrastructure, not a managed YouTube channel. Microsoft Learn says VM operators remain responsible for configuration, patching, and installing software. With any self-managed VM, the operator also owns the encoder setup and the plan for detecting and recovering from failures.

- Choose an encoder and validate the workload: Match the VM to the encoder, codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use. No universal VM size or OBS performance claim is established for every stream.
- Configure the YouTube stream: Use the settings for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS, testing with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health.
- Plan the network: Provide sustained upload capacity above the encoded bitrate to allow headroom. The VM provider’s egress charges and YouTube ingest path should be considered separately from audience playback.
- Own recovery: Decide how the encoder starts after a reboot, how you detect a stopped process or dropped connection, and how it reconnects. A single VM does not provide application-level recovery by itself.
- Protect credentials and content rights: Keep the YouTube stream key private and use content you have the right to broadcast. Follow YouTube’s live-stream and copyright rules; a cloud host does not grant permission to stream music, video, or other material.
Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance to size the stream
YouTube publishes recommended encoder bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The examples below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of the bandwidth a particular VM needs or of successful delivery.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
For the complete current table and related setup recommendations, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings. Test the actual combination of content motion, audio, codec, and frame rate you plan to use. Provision network headroom beyond the encoded bitrate, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a representative test.

Understand availability and recovery
A provider’s infrastructure SLA is not a promise that your encoder, network path, and YouTube broadcast will remain uninterrupted. A VM can be reachable while the encoder has stopped, or the stream can fail for reasons outside the VM provider’s SLA.
- Azure: Microsoft’s reliability guidance explains transient faults and zone or region failures. A single zonal VM is not, by itself, resilient to a zone outage. Microsoft documents 99.99% connectivity for at least one VM when two or more instances span two or more availability zones in the same region; that figure applies to the stated configuration and connectivity scope, not to end-to-end YouTube uptime.
- Hetzner: The Cloud Server SLA states 99.9% monthly availability, with defined exclusions and cloud-credit remedies. It does not establish application availability or a continuously live YouTube broadcast.
- Other self-managed VMs: Plan for instance, process, and connection failures yourself. Redundant compute or a recovery design can add cost and complexity; a second instance does not automatically make the encoder fail over cleanly.
For Azure’s VM billing and availability details, see Microsoft Learn’s overview of virtual machines and virtual machine reliability guidance. Azure charges for VM compute based on size and operating system, with storage charged separately, so the compute line alone is not the full workload cost.

Estimate total cost for your stream
There is no supported universal cheapest-provider winner. A useful estimate needs the same workload, region, operating hours, and recovery target for every option. Include each applicable item below before comparing provider estimates.
- Region and the VM size or managed-service configuration available there.
- Resolution, frame rate, codec, and actual encoded bitrate.
- Expected operating hours and outbound data volume; clarify how the provider bills egress and whether the YouTube ingest traffic is charged.
- Operating-system and compute charges, disks, public IP and networking charges, and any managed encoder or broadcast-service fees.
- Storage requirements and, if needed, a second instance or other recovery design.
- Quotas, regional capacity, SLA scope and exclusions, and any credits or limits in the provider’s terms.
Request current estimates using your own region and workload. Current all-in totals are not established on a like-for-like basis for these providers, so a headline VM rate should not be treated as the price of running a continuous stream.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect stream key, ingest URL, or encoder output settings | Confirm the YouTube stream configuration and that the encoder is sending to the intended destination. Keep the stream key private. |
| Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops | Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, or a configuration that does not match the intended stream | Check the encoder bitrate against YouTube’s guidance, add network headroom, test representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health. |
| Stream stops after a VM reboot | The encoder does not start automatically, or reconnect behavior is not configured | Verify the startup and restart procedure, then test it by restarting the VM before relying on continuous operation. |
| VM is available but the channel is offline | The encoder process or YouTube connection has failed while the VM remains up | Monitor the encoder and broadcast separately from VM availability; define a process restart and reconnect plan. |
| Unexpected cloud bill | Compute-only estimates omitted storage, networking, outbound transfer, managed services, or redundancy | Review the itemized estimate against operating hours, region, bitrate, data volume, and recovery design. |
