B350 vs B450: Which AM4 Motherboard Chipset Should You Choose?

B450 is usually the safer AM4 motherboard purchase, but it is not inherently faster than B350. The key differences are CPU support, BIOS certainty, and each board’s actual features and power delivery.

B450 is usually the safer choice when buying an AM4 motherboard, especially for a Ryzen 3000 or Ryzen 5000 build—but it is not meaningfully faster than B350 by itself. The chipsets offer broadly similar core connectivity and both support overclocking. The practical difference is CPU and BIOS support: B450 is the more straightforward path to newer AM4 processors, while Ryzen 5000 support on B350 is selective and may depend on a beta BIOS. If you already own a stable B350 board, check its exact CPU support before replacing it.

What B350 and B450 mean

B350 and B450 are AMD chipsets for motherboards using the AM4 socket. They are not processors, and the chipset name does not tell you everything about a complete motherboard: manufacturers choose the power delivery, firmware features, storage layout, networking, and physical ports.

B350 was the mainstream enthusiast chipset introduced with first-generation Ryzen. B450 followed with second-generation Ryzen. Both sit below AMD’s X-series enthusiast chipsets, and both allow CPU and memory overclocking at the chipset level. AMD’s AM4 chipset specifications show how similar their headline capabilities are.

B350 vs B450 specifications

The table below describes AMD’s chipset-level specifications, not the connectors or features guaranteed on every motherboard.

CPU compatibility: check the exact board and BIOS

AM4 socket fit is not proof that a processor will boot. The motherboard manufacturer’s CPU-support list and the installed BIOS version determine whether a particular CPU works. AMD’s AM4 compatibility table gives the chipset-level picture, but it does not replace the support page for an individual board.

Ryzen generation B350 B450 What to verify
Ryzen 1000 Designed for this generation Generally supported Confirm the particular model and its BIOS.
Ryzen 2000 Generally supported Designed with this generation in mind A used board may still have an old or mismatched BIOS.
Ryzen 3000 Many boards support it with the appropriate BIOS Generally the safer option with the appropriate BIOS Check the CPU-support list and required BIOS revision.
Ryzen 4000 desktop APUs Support varies by model and BIOS Support varies by model and BIOS AMD marks support selectively; do not assume a whole chipset family supports every APU.
Ryzen 5000 Selective support requiring a beta BIOS update Supported on compatible board models with the required BIOS Confirm the exact CPU, board revision, BIOS version, and update path.

Why Ryzen 5000 is the deciding case

B450 is usually the less uncertain option for a Ryzen 5000 upgrade, but “B450 supports Ryzen 5000” is not a guarantee for every board or BIOS. B350 support is narrower: AMD describes it as selective beta BIOS support. Do not assume a B350 board will run a Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, or any other Ryzen 5000 processor without checking its exact manufacturer support listing.

How to verify a BIOS before you buy or upgrade

  1. Identify the board exactly. Record the full model name and hardware revision printed on the board or shown in firmware. Similar model names can use different BIOS files.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s CPU-support page. Find the exact processor and note the minimum BIOS version. For example, ASUS’s Prime B450-PLUS CPU support page lists processors with their validated BIOS versions.
  3. Check how the board can be flashed. Look for USB BIOS Flashback, Q-Flash Plus, Flash BIOS Button, or another CPU-less update feature. If it has none, the current CPU must be supported to boot the board for a firmware update.
  4. Get the BIOS status in writing when buying used. Ask the seller for the installed version or confirmation that the board boots with your intended CPU. If it cannot, arrange a compatible older CPU, retailer update service, or local repair shop before relying on the purchase.
  5. Use only the exact board’s instructions and firmware. Follow the specified USB format, filename, port, and button sequence for a CPU-less flash. Never use a file for a similar model or different board revision, and do not interrupt power while flashing.

If an updated board fails to post, clear CMOS and test with one memory stick, the CPU power connector attached, and unnecessary drives disconnected. These checks can help isolate a setup problem, but they cannot make an unsupported CPU/BIOS combination compatible.

Gaming performance, PCIe, storage, and USB

Does B450 increase gaming performance?

No general gaming-performance increase follows from the B450 name. With comparable CPU, graphics card, memory, and motherboard quality, B350 and B450 do not inherently deliver different frame rates. Game performance depends much more on those components and the game’s workload than on this chipset choice.

Graphics cards and PCIe 4.0 drives

AMD lists both chipsets as PCIe 3.0. A PCIe 4.0 graphics card is backward-compatible with PCIe 3.0, while a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive will ordinarily run at PCIe 3.0 speeds on these platforms. The exact board determines slot wiring and whether secondary slots share bandwidth with M.2 or SATA connections. Do not count on PCIe 4.0 simply because a B450 board is paired with a newer AM4 processor.

Board-level features are not chipset totals

AMD’s totals do not mean every board has 14 physical USB ports, six usable SATA ports, or the same M.2 configuration. Check the board specification for the number and type of M.2 slots, supported SATA/NVMe modes, port-sharing rules, rear USB Type-A or Type-C connections, front-panel headers, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and audio. For a concrete example of how a manufacturer specifies one model’s implementation, see MSI’s B450 Gaming Plus specifications.

Overclocking, VRMs, and memory

Both chipsets permit overclocking, but the chipset does not determine whether a particular board can safely sustain an overclock. Compare the exact board’s VRM and power-stage design, heatsink coverage, CPU power connector, firmware voltage controls, and reputable temperature testing. A well-built B350 board can have better power delivery than a weak B450 model.

For demanding all-core workloads, a board that is adequate for a lower-power CPU at stock settings may not suit a higher-core-count processor under sustained load or aggressive overclocking. Ryzen 5000 compatibility in firmware is not, by itself, evidence that a board’s power delivery is suitable for every use. AMD warns that operating a processor beyond stock specifications carries risks including damage, instability, data loss, or corruption, and may affect applicable AMD warranty coverage; consult its overclocking disclaimer for the published terms.

B450 is generally the less troublesome choice for faster DDR4 because later firmware and board revisions benefited from AM4 memory-compatibility improvements. It is still a tendency, not a guaranteed speed. The CPU memory controller, BIOS/AGESA, DIMM layout, number and rank of modules, board traces, and validated memory kit all matter. MSI’s B450 Gaming Plus specification, for example, distinguishes memory speeds by processor generation and JEDEC versus A-XMP/overclocked settings.

Buying a used B350 or B450 in 2026

Used and refurbished listings vary by region, condition, seller, and bundle. Marketplace results are price signals, not dependable quotes for a particular board. Compare the exact model’s features and condition against the cost of a newer alternative rather than paying a premium for the chipset label. Search pages such as Newegg’s B450 AM4 listings can show what is being offered, but listings may be used, refurbished, third-party, or bundled inconsistently.

  • Inspect the socket for damaged or contaminated pins, corrosion, missing VRM heatsinks, and signs of repair.
  • Ask for the exact board revision, BIOS version, and evidence it boots; confirm that the seller’s return policy covers an incompatible or faulty board.
  • Check whether the I/O shield and any required Wi-Fi antennas or M.2 hardware are included.
  • If possible, test memory slots, M.2, SATA, USB, and network connections rather than relying only on a successful power-on.
  • Compare price and feature set with B550. AMD lists B550 as PCIe 4.0-capable with supported processors and a different CPU-compatibility profile, so it may be a better new purchase when prices are close. It is not automatically suitable for the earliest Ryzen CPUs.

B350 is more likely to turn up as used, refurbished, or remaining stock than as a routine new retail product. A model-specific reference such as MSI’s B350 Tomahawk Plus specifications can help evaluate its original layout, but it does not establish the condition or BIOS of a used board.

Which one should you choose?

Keep an existing B350 board

If it is stable with a Ryzen 1000 or 2000 processor, there is no chipset-based reason to replace it. For Ryzen 3000 or 5000, verify CPU support and BIOS first; also assess the board’s VRM against your workload before upgrading.

Buy B450 for a lower-risk AM4 build

Choose a B450 board when its price is sensible and the exact model’s BIOS supports your processor. It is usually the safer purchase for Ryzen 3000 or Ryzen 5000, particularly if you are not prepared to find an older CPU just to flash the firmware.

Consider B350 only as a verified bargain

A B350 board can make sense if it is substantially cheaper, tested, in good condition, and listed by its manufacturer for your exact CPU and BIOS. Avoid an unidentified board or one with unknown BIOS status when you cannot update it without a working supported processor.

Compare B550 when buying now

If a B450 costs nearly as much as a suitable B550, compare the B550’s newer features and PCIe 4.0 support with its CPU compatibility before buying. B550 is not a reason to replace a good existing B350 or B450 board when your current system already meets your needs. StoreMI, which AMD lists with B450, is not a compelling reason on its own to choose an older board today.
