Verdict: The Backbone One PlayStation Edition is a compelling phone controller for PS5 and PS4 Remote Play, mobile games, and cloud gaming if you value a compact, wired setup and PlayStation styling. Its small form favors portability over full-size comfort, and it does not reproduce the DualSense’s advanced features. Before buying, match the controller’s connector to your phone: the Lightning and USB-C versions are different models.
What the Backbone One PlayStation Edition is
This officially licensed telescoping controller connects directly to a compatible phone’s charging port rather than pairing over Bluetooth. PlayStation says it was designed in collaboration with the company and inspired by the DualSense’s look. It has two analog sticks, a D-pad, PlayStation-style face buttons, L1/R1 bumpers, L2/R2 analog triggers, Options and Create buttons, and a Backbone app button. There is also a 3.5mm headset jack and pass-through charging. The controller draws power from the phone, so it has no separate controller battery to charge. PlayStation’s announcement and Backbone’s product page describe the hardware and its features.
Its main appeal is practical: attach a phone and play with physical controls without carrying a separate full-size gamepad. It can serve for controller-compatible mobile games as well as streamed games. “PlayStation Edition” primarily means PlayStation styling and Remote Play integration; it does not restrict the controller to PlayStation games.
Choose the right connector before you buy
The Lightning and USB-C models are not interchangeable. Check the port on your phone itself, not just its age or operating system.

Backbone says its second-generation model includes two sets of magnetic adapters intended to improve phone fit, a reshaped D-pad, and better compatibility with many phone cases. Those are manufacturer claims, not guarantees that every phone and case will fit. Check the USB-C model’s compatibility details or the Lightning model’s details before ordering.
How PS5 and PS4 Remote Play works
The Backbone does not run PS5 or PS4 games locally. The console runs the game and streams its picture and sound to the phone through the PS Remote Play app; the controller sends button input through its wired phone connection. The experience therefore depends on more than the controller: the console and phone need a stable network connection, and a wired controller cannot remove streaming delays, compression, frame drops, or interruptions caused by the network.

PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed and recommends 15 Mbps or higher for a better Remote Play experience. These are PlayStation’s stated network guidelines, not a guarantee of a particular image quality or response time. Stability, Wi-Fi congestion, the console’s upload connection, and mobile coverage when playing away from home also matter. See PlayStation’s Remote Play information and its Backbone announcement.
What you need
- A PS4 or PS5 configured for Remote Play.
- A PlayStation Network account associated with the console.
- The PS Remote Play app on a compatible phone.
- Broadband internet and a sufficiently stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
Basic setup
- Install PS Remote Play on the phone and sign in with the PlayStation Network account associated with the console.
- Enable Remote Play on the PS4 or PS5, then use the app to link to or select the console.
- Fit the phone into the Backbone, making sure the connector is seated securely.
- Open PS Remote Play, connect to the console, and use the controller during the streamed session.
PlayStation announced support for the PlayStation Edition on Android through an updated PS Remote Play app in 2023; its Android launch announcement explains that distinction. Remote Play does not support games that require PlayStation VR or unavailable peripherals such as PlayStation Camera. Some DualSense functions can vary by Remote Play platform and may not be available.

Controls, comfort, and portability
The PlayStation layout makes the main controls familiar to console players, while the telescoping body keeps the overall package compact. TechRadar lists the Backbone One 2nd Gen at about 176 × 93.98 × 34.03 mm and 138 g (4.86 oz) in its GameSir G8 Galileo comparison coverage. Treat those as secondary-source figures for the 2nd Gen, not a measurement of every version or a guarantee of how it will feel in hand.
The same compactness creates the key ergonomic trade-off: it offers less palm support and smaller controls than a full-size gamepad. That can make it a sensible choice for travel, short sessions, and games where pocketability matters more than a broad grip. Players with larger hands, hand fatigue, or a preference for long competitive sessions may want a larger controller. Without hands-on testing, comfort and control precision are individual judgments rather than claims that can be guaranteed.

- Likely good fit: turn-based RPGs, platformers, action-adventure games, racing games, casual mobile games, and portable Remote Play sessions.
- Consider a larger controller: long shooter sessions, fighting games where you rely on precise D-pad execution, or play that benefits from larger grips and extra rear buttons.
The controller has analog triggers, but PlayStation-inspired styling does not make it a DualSense. Do not expect adaptive-trigger resistance, the DualSense’s haptic feedback, or its built-in speaker and microphone feature set. PlayStation notes that audio and haptic features can vary or be unavailable during Remote Play. The available information also does not establish Hall-effect sticks or rear paddles as features of this controller.

Backbone lists support for services and platforms including Apple Arcade, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Xbox Remote Play, GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, and Steam Link, subject to device, app, game, and regional availability. The Backbone app can act as a launcher and library interface; it does not automatically provide the games or paid subscriptions surfaced there. A player may still need access to the relevant game, console, account, or service subscription. Ordinary compatible mobile play and PS Remote Play should not be confused with Backbone+ access: Backbone specifically says its wired “Play On Any Screen” mode requires Backbone+. Its current price and feature terms can change, so check the product page if that mode matters to you.
Alternatives: more grip, more controls, or lower cost
These alternatives trade the Backbone’s compactness and PlayStation-specific simplicity for different priorities. The cited comparison prices are reported figures, not guaranteed current prices; retailer, region, model, and promotion can affect what you pay.

A larger controller may be preferable if comfort and extra controls outweigh portability. The Backbone makes more sense when keeping a phone-sized setup compact is the priority. The available comparison sources do not establish a complete, current feature-by-feature assessment of the standard Backbone or Razer Kishi Ultra; compare their exact models and compatibility with the phone you own before choosing one.

- iPhone or Android user who values portability: A good fit if you select the correct connector and your phone fits securely.

- Competitive player, large-handed user, or long-session player: Compare a fuller-size option if grip size, rear buttons, or additional features matter more than a compact profile.

Bottom line: Choose the Backbone One PlayStation Edition for a compact, direct-connected phone controller with PlayStation-friendly styling and Remote Play support. Choose something larger if comfort and extra controls take priority. In either case, confirm the phone connector and physical fit before ordering.
