Backyard Baseball ’97 is already available on Steam: the original 1997 game launched there on October 10, 2024. This release adapts that classic for Steam; it is distinct from the newer Backyard Baseball game that launched in 2026.
What the Steam release includes
Steam describes this as the original 1997 game updated to run on the platform, rather than a remake or a new entry. Mega Cat Studios is listed as developer and Playground Productions as publisher. The release date was October 10, 2024. Steam’s store listing has the current product details.
Modes and rules
The listed options include pickup games, batting practice, single games and full seasons, with rules players can customize. The game combines professional and Little League rules: leading off and injuries are absent, while bunting and tagging up are allowed. The roster includes 30 Backyard Kids. Steam lists the release as single-player, with 25 achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. Steam’s listing also describes global leaderboards for home runs.
Where you can play it
The Steam listing specifies Windows 10 32-bit as both the minimum and recommended operating system. It does not establish native support for modern macOS. The developers say the original source code was unavailable, limiting what could be adapted; the Steam description specifically notes that modern macOS cannot run the original 32-bit binaries. Check the system requirements and compatibility details on Steam before buying.

How it differs from the newer Backyard Baseball
The ’97 Steam release preserves the original game in an adaptation for Steam. It is not the separate newer Backyard Baseball game. Official Steam community news announced that newer title for summer 2026 and later gave July 9, 2026 as its launch date. The official Steam community news covers that separate game’s announcement; do not treat its modes or mechanics as features of the ’97 release.

Why the re-release matters
The Steam description presents the adaptation as a way to preserve the original game for a modern storefront, and says it runs more smoothly while adding Steam features. Those are the publisher and developer’s descriptions, not independent performance-test results. The practical choice is straightforward: get the Steam version for the original game with the listed Steam features, or look at the separately released newer game if you want that distinct entry.
