Two other movie tie-ins—Spider-Man 2 (2004) and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay—are worth your time, but the available evidence supports calling them great adaptations, not games based on bad films.
The clearest match: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
ComicBook.com calls the film awful and its game solid, making this the strongest fit for “bad movie, great game” among the examples covered here. The game’s appeal is not just that it lets you play as Wolverine: it builds around the character’s defining traits, turning savage close-quarters combat and his ability to heal from injury into visible parts of the action. ComicBook.com’s comparison highlights the game’s graphic combat and its real-time depiction of Wolverine’s healing factor.
The game was released in editions with different ratings. ComicBook.com notes that an M-rated version offered more graphic combat “if you’re on the right platform”; that rating should not be assumed for every edition. Check the platform and edition when looking for a copy.
Great tie-ins that do not prove the movies were bad
A good adaptation is not automatically evidence that its film was bad. The following games stand out for what they do as games, but the sources here do not establish that their films were poorly received.

Spider-Man 2 (2004): web-swinging makes the city the attraction
The 2004 game’s best idea is to make traversal feel like the fantasy of being Spider-Man. Swinging across a broad version of Manhattan and exploring the city freely are its defining strengths. GamesRadar+ highlights its free-roaming New York, while VGC points to the swinging mechanic and large city areas.
It is not flawless. GameSpot reviewer Jeff Gerstmann judged it “a good game,” but criticized its repetition and the way its open-ended design left the experience feeling like a missed opportunity. His June 30, 2004 review gives a useful counterweight to the game’s reputation: an excellent signature mechanic does not prevent the surrounding activities from wearing thin. VGC also reports that release timing led to content cuts, a reminder that a strong central idea can coexist with compromises elsewhere.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay: a prison-break prequel, not a retelling
Escape from Butcher Bay is a prequel to The Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black, following Riddick as he tries to escape prison. Rather than simply replaying a film’s plot, it uses the setting for a stealth-and-action game. VGC praises that combination, and GamesRadar+ points to the limited HUD and original story as ways the game develops its own identity.
That different approach is the useful comparison with Spider-Man 2: one makes a character’s signature movement the core pleasure, while the other builds a distinct game around a licensed world and protagonist. Neither example, on the evidence cited here, belongs in a list of games proven to be better than a bad film.

Why a movie tie-in can work
The strongest adaptations turn something distinctive about their character or world into a satisfying game mechanic. Wolverine’s healing factor becomes part of the combat’s visual language; Spider-Man’s web-swinging makes movement across Manhattan enjoyable in its own right; Riddick’s prison escape supports stealth as well as action. A game that merely follows a film’s plot does not automatically inherit those strengths.
Development conditions matter, too, though they do not guarantee quality. VGC notes that GoldenEye 007 benefited from enough time for developer Rare to move away from an on-rails concept and make a first-person shooter. It is useful context for how room to shape a game can matter, not another bad-film example: the sources here do not establish the GoldenEye film as poorly received.

Which one should you try?
- For the closest match to the title: X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the strongest pick in this group because the cited coverage directly contrasts a badly regarded movie with a solid game.
- For movement and exploration: Spider-Man 2 (2004) is the choice if web-swinging around a city is the main draw; expect repetitive activities as well as a memorable central mechanic.
- For stealth and a story beyond the films: Escape from Butcher Bay offers a prison-break prequel with its own stealth-action identity.
