Balatro is listed as Steam Deck Verified, but that rating does not guarantee a crash-free experience on every Deck or software setup. Start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then temporarily disable third-party apps; if the problem continues, Valve also recommends testing the latest Proton version for app stability. These are general Steam Deck troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed Balatro-specific cure.
What Steam Deck Verified means for Balatro
Steam lists Balatro as Verified for Steam Deck. The single-player game, developed by LocalThunk and published by Playstack, was released on February 20, 2024. Valve describes Verified games as working well on Deck by default, while noting that compatibility reviews are ongoing. The rating is useful context, not a promise that an individual device, game build, or setup cannot crash. See Valve’s Deck Verified explanation.
Try these fixes in order
Make one change at a time and retest Balatro after each step. That makes it easier to tell whether the symptom changes without assuming a cause.
-
Install SteamOS updates and restart
Check for available Steam Deck system updates, install them, then restart from Steam > Power > Restart. Valve lists updates and a restart among its general software troubleshooting steps in the Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide.

Temporarily exit third-party apps
Exit or disable third-party applications you installed through Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and try the game again. This is an isolation check: it can show whether the crash changes when added software is not running, but does not identify any particular app as responsible.

Check the compatibility information
Confirm Balatro’s current Steam listing and the compatibility details shown for it in your Deck Library. Verified describes how the game works by default under Valve’s program; it does not diagnose a crash on your particular setup.

Test the latest Proton version if stability trouble continues
In the Library, highlight Balatro, open its menu, then go to Properties > Compatibility. Enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool and select the latest Proton version available. This is a test, not a guaranteed fix. Valve notes that Steam may download the Windows version of a game if only its Linux version is installed.
Identify what is actually crashing
Record the symptom and when it occurs before escalating. These observations can help distinguish a game issue from broader Deck instability; by themselves, they do not establish a cause.

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- Balatro closes to the Library: Note whether it happens at launch, during a run, or after a particular action.
- The game freezes but the Deck responds: Record whether you can still open Steam menus or return to the Library.
- The whole Deck freezes or restarts: Treat this as system-level instability rather than only a game closing.
- Other games also have problems: Note which ones and whether their symptoms are similar.
When to contact Steam Support
If the Deck itself freezes or restarts, or Balatro continues to crash after updates and a restart, contact Steam Support. Include the Deck model, SteamOS version, game version, exact symptom, when it happens, whether other games are affected, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. Valve’s guide directs users to support for persistent issues.

A Steam Community discussion titled “Bug Report – Balatro crashes on Steam Deck” includes reports of freezes and device restarts. They are anecdotal reports with different symptoms, not a controlled diagnosis, a measure of how often crashes happen, or evidence that one workaround fixes the issue for everyone.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
For that reason, begin with reversible steps. A factory reset, BIOS changes, or community Proton builds are not supported as first-line remedies by Valve’s general guidance or by those reports.
