The best Wizard spells in Baldur’s Gate 3 are the ones that change a fight or solve a problem without wasting your turn, slot, or concentration. This Patch 8-era ranking weighs damage, reliability, action economy, party benefit, and versatility—not just how large a spell’s damage number looks. It covers spells available to Wizards, including spells they can learn from scrolls, rather than only spells on the class’s standard list. The ordering is editorial judgment, not an official Larian ranking.

How this ranking works

A spell’s value depends on the fight and the character casting it. A reaction that prevents a lethal hit may matter more than another attack; control can be stronger than damage if it denies enemy turns; and a powerful concentration spell has an opportunity cost because it prevents maintaining another concentration effect. The ranking favors broadly useful spells, while noting when build, positioning, enemy saves, or resistance make a choice situational.

The ranking reflects the Patch 8 environment. Larian’s Patch 8 announcement introduced 12 subclasses, including Bladesinging Wizard. The community-maintained Wizard spell reference and Patch 8 notes document spell-list and mechanics context. Neither source publishes a spell ranking.

The 25 best Wizard spells

1. Counterspell

Role: Stop a dangerous enemy spell as a reaction. Counterspell can prevent a major effect before it harms the party, making it especially valuable against casters whose turns could swing an encounter. Its value depends on having a reaction available and being able to counter the spell; it does not help against ordinary weapon attacks.

  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

2. Shield

Role: Emergency defense. Shield uses a reaction rather than your action, so it can blunt an attack without giving up your turn. It is most useful when a hit would be costly and you can still respond; its value is lower when incoming attacks are unlikely to connect or another reaction is more important.

3. Haste

Role: Accelerate a key ally. Haste can give a strong martial character more opportunity to attack and reposition, multiplying the output of a party member who can capitalize on it. It requires concentration, so weigh its payoff against control spells and the consequences of losing the effect.

4. Slow

Role: Reduce the threat of several enemies at once. Slow is a strong answer when a group of dangerous foes can be affected, limiting their ability to act effectively while allies focus them down. It relies on enemies failing their saves and requires concentration, so it is less dependable against resistant or high-save targets.

5. Fireball

Role: Broad area damage. The Wizard reference lists Fireball as a third-level spell dealing 8d6 fire damage. It can rapidly soften clustered enemies, but fire resistance and friendly fire can reduce its value; choose the area carefully rather than treating the listed damage as guaranteed.

6. Misty Step

Role: Bonus-action repositioning. Misty Step can get a Wizard out of danger, reach a better casting position, or cross a gap without consuming the action needed for another spell. That flexibility makes it useful in encounters where line of sight, elevation, or escape matters.

7. Hypnotic Pattern

Role: Disable a cluster of enemies. When targets fail their saves, this spell can remove multiple threats from the immediate fight and let the party deal with the rest. It is concentration-based and can be undermined when affected enemies are harmed or otherwise roused, so coordinate with allies instead of automatically attacking every disabled foe.

  • Tactical Combat: Engage in strategic, turn-based battles that require careful planning and execution of your party's abilities.
  • Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.

8. Wall of Fire

Role: Area denial and damage. The reference lists this fourth-level spell at 5d8 fire damage. Its greatest value is often the space it controls: a well-placed wall can punish enemies crossing it or constrain their routes. It needs concentration and smart placement, and fire-resistant enemies are a poor match.

9. Globe of Invulnerability

Role: Protect a group from severe magical threats. When a battle turns on surviving powerful spells, this can give allies a crucial safe zone. Its value is encounter-specific and positional; it is less compelling against enemies who can simply approach, reposition, or attack the party with other means.

10. Conjure Elemental

Role: Add a durable combatant. A summon can contribute attacks and occupy enemy attention while the Wizard continues to cast other spells. The benefit is spread across the encounter rather than delivered in one burst, making it useful when a fight is expected to last long enough for the summon to act.

11. Magic Missile

Role: Reliable force damage. Its projectiles do not rely on an attack roll, making the spell a useful way to finish weakened enemies or deal with targets that are difficult to hit conventionally. It is less efficient when a high-impact area or control spell can affect several enemies instead.

12. Hold Monster

Role: Lock down a priority target. A failed save can leave a dangerous foe vulnerable while the party concentrates damage on it. The spell is strongest when allies can exploit the opening immediately; save success, target eligibility, and concentration all limit its reliability.

13. Invisibility

Role: Stealth and tactical repositioning. Invisibility can enable a safer approach or help a character break contact, and its uses extend beyond straightforward damage turns. Its practical value depends on the situation and on whether the character takes an action that ends the effect.

Rank #3
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear
  • Baldur's Gate - Since its original release in 1998, Baldur's Gate has set the standard for Dungeons & Dragons computer roleplaying games.
  • Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
  • Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.

14. Fly

Role: Mobility across difficult terrain. Flight can open routes around hazards, elevation changes, and blocked approaches, and can help a character reach a better position. It is most valuable when the battlefield or exploration route rewards vertical movement; it competes for concentration with combat effects.

15. Sleet Storm

Role: Disrupt a large area. This spell can make an approach treacherous and interfere with enemy spellcasters’ concentration, creating value even when it does not directly defeat anyone. Its terrain effect can also complicate movement for allies, so placement matters.

16. Cloud of Daggers

Role: Punish enemies in a confined space. The spell is especially effective when opponents are trapped, forced to move through its area, or otherwise unable to avoid it. Its narrow footprint and concentration requirement make it less reliable in open fights where enemies can simply go elsewhere.

17. Fear

Role: Break an enemy formation. Fear can disrupt several foes and force them to spend time fleeing or dropping what they carry, giving allies room to act. It depends on failed saves and positioning; foes that cannot be affected or can quickly recover are less suitable targets.

18. Arcane Lock

Role: Control access. This is a utility choice rather than a damage spell: sealing a door or passage can delay pursuers or help manage the flow of an encounter. Its usefulness depends on the environment, but when a route is strategically important it can solve a problem that a direct attack cannot.

19. See Invisibility

Role: Reveal hidden threats. It can help the party locate creatures that would otherwise remain difficult to target or track. Its value rises when an encounter actually involves invisible enemies; outside those situations, another prepared spell may contribute more consistently.

20. Dimension Door

Role: Relocate two characters. This can rescue an ally from a bad position or move the Wizard and a companion past an obstacle. It is a high-impact answer to a positioning emergency, though its value is lower when ordinary movement or Misty Step is enough.

21. Greater Invisibility

Role: Protect a character while enabling offense. It can support a character who needs to attack while remaining difficult to target, but its payoff depends on the recipient’s build and the demands of maintaining concentration. Treat it as a tailored option rather than a universal best-in-slot.

22. Ice Storm

Role: Area damage with terrain disruption. It can hit a group and leave difficult ground that affects movement, combining immediate pressure with battlefield impact. Its damage and control are less attractive when enemies resist the damage type or the resulting terrain hinders allies.

23. Sleep

Role: Remove weakened enemies early. Sleep is most effective against low-health targets, where it can end or postpone threats without relying on a saving throw. Its usefulness falls as enemies gain more health, so it tends to be strongest earlier in a campaign or against already-injured foes.

24. Shadow Blade

Role: Melee weapon for a suitable Wizard build. Patch 8’s reference lists it as a second-level Wizard spell dealing 2d8 plus a Strength or Dexterity modifier as psychic damage; attacks against a target in dim light or darkness have advantage. That combination makes it a distinctive option for a melee-capable Wizard, especially a Bladesinger, but it is conditional on fighting in melee and benefiting from the lighting.

25. Feather Fall

Role: Prevent fall damage and unlock routes. It may contribute little in a conventional fight, but can turn a dangerous drop into a safe path for the party. Its value is therefore highly dependent on exploration and vertical terrain rather than damage output.

How to choose spells for your Wizard

  • Build for the encounters you face: Bring area damage when enemies cluster, control when dangerous foes can be disabled, and protection when the party must survive a high-threat caster.
  • Account for action economy: Reaction spells such as Counterspell and Shield, and bonus-action Misty Step, can fit around a turn in ways that an action spell cannot.
  • Track concentration: Haste, Slow, Wall of Fire, and many other high-impact options compete with one another. Choose the effect that best serves the fight instead of treating every strong spell as stackable.
  • Use positioning deliberately: Fireball, Wall of Fire, Cloud of Daggers, and terrain effects can hurt or inconvenience allies if placed carelessly.
  • Adapt to the character: Shadow Blade favors a melee-capable Wizard; exploration spells rise in value in areas with hazards or hidden routes, while combat-focused spells matter more in battle-heavy stretches.

No official source establishes a definitive ordering or performance statistic for these spells. The ranking is a practical guide to their different jobs, not a promise that one fixed loadout is best for every party or encounter.
