Spoilers ahead. Baldur’s Gate 3 has a limited number of quests and encounters that can close because of a long rest, a location transition, a quest milestone, or a combat-turn limit. Most quests do not fail simply because you rest. The useful rule is to deal with a known local emergency before resting or fast-travelling, and to finish important side content before major area transitions—not to avoid long rests altogether.
The triggers below are drawn from the community-maintained bg3.wiki time-sensitive activities reference, reviewed October 7, 2026. Some fine details and turn limits may depend on game version or difficulty; those cases are identified rather than presented as universal rules.
How time-sensitive quests work
There is no general day counter that steadily expires quests. The documented deadlines are specific: a particular number of long rests after a trigger, leaving a location, resolving another quest, or surviving a limited number of combat turns. The bg3.wiki time-sensitive quest category is a useful companion to its activity list, but an alarming journal entry alone does not prove that a quest has a hidden timer.
Five major transitions can automatically resolve or close other content: entering the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands, entering the Shadowfell, leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands for Baldur’s Gate at the end of Act Two, and entering the Morphic Pool at the end of Act Three. Treat each as a checkpoint: complete relevant local quests first, or accept that some outcomes may be locked in. The Shadowfell transition is especially consequential because it makes earlier maps inaccessible and ends the chance to rescue the Moonrise tieflings and Wulbren.

Act One: quests that can fail
Missing Shipment and the beach
- Find the Missing Shipment: Approaching the Risen Road cave starts the encounter. After that, one long rest results in Rugan and Olly being killed by gnolls.
- Investigate the Beach: Approaching the beach north of the Emerald Grove’s Inner Sanctum starts the encounter with Mirkon. A long rest after triggering it results in his death. Mirkon can also die if the goblin-defeat quest resolves before you rescue him, even if you never formally triggered the beach quest.
Waukeen’s Rest: go straight to the fire
After you approach Waukeen’s Rest, a long rest, fast travel, or entering the Rosymorn Monastery Trail causes the trapped survivors—including Benryn—to die. This is an immediate local emergency once triggered: deal with the fire before resting or travelling elsewhere.
Blighted Village windmill
Rescue the Gnome: After approaching the windmill in the Blighted Village, entering Grymforge, the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, or the Shadow-Cursed Lands causes Barcus Wroot to die. Rescue him before moving on to one of those areas.

Emerald Grove, the goblins, and the refugees
Save Arabella, Save Sazza, and Save the Refugees can be affected by resolving the goblin conflict or leaving the region. Completing Defeat the Goblins or Raid the Grove can end the opportunity to save Arabella or Sazza. If Investigate Kagha is unfinished when you leave for the Rosymorn Monastery Trail or Shadow-Cursed Lands, the Rite of Thorns can be completed. If the grove remains unresolved, the tieflings can leave; even after defeating the goblins, leaving before the celebration long rest can result in the same loss of the refugees.
Grymforge rubble and Thulla
- Free True Soul Nere / Save the Grymforge Gnomes: Once you interact with the rubble, two long rests, two departures from Grymforge, or a combination of a rest and a departure causes Nere to die and the gnomes to disappear.
- Cure the Poisoned Gnome: After approaching Thulla in Ebonlake Grotto, three long rests cause her to become a myconid husk.
Companion-related deadlines
- Lae’zel: After the patrol situation, failing to speak to Kith’rak Voss before resting or fast-travelling can put her in danger. This is tied to that quest state, not a general limit on resting.
- Karlach: She can leave if the party advances to later regions before resolving the situation with Anders and the Paladins of Tyr.
Act Two: rescues and encounters
Moonrise prisoners and Rolan
Entering the Shadowfell ends the opportunity to Rescue the Tieflings and Rescue Wulbren. If these rescues matter to your playthrough, complete them before crossing that threshold.

For Find Rolan in the Shadows, resolve the abduction first; approaching Rolan’s location then begins the fight with the shadows. Intervene immediately, or Rolan is slain.
Halsin’s portal
During Lift the Shadow Curse, once Halsin opens the portal to rescue Thaniel, protect it for four combat turns. This is an encounter timer, not a long-rest deadline.

Florrick at Last Light Inn and Dolly Thrice
- Meeting Florrick: After arriving at Last Light Inn, one long rest causes Florrick to leave and leave a letter. The activity listing describes her departure; it does not establish that she dies.
- Dolly Thrice: After acquiring Kar’niss’s Moonlantern, free Dolly before entering Act Three or she dies.
Act Three: deadlines, choices, and combat turns
Rescue Counsellor Florrick
Once you learn of the execution through the notices or coronation dialogue, Counsellor Florrick is executed after the fifth long rest. This countdown begins with that discovery, not merely upon entering Act Three.
The Strange Ox and the murder investigation
- Help the Devilish Ox: Meeting the Strange Ox in Rivington creates a location-based deadline. Entering the Lower City ends this opportunity.
- Investigate the Murders: The activity listing gives Cora Highberry a one-long-rest window after qualifying triggers. It also reports that entering the Murder Tribunal via a murder victim’s hand may let Dolor kill Figaro, but marks that specific condition as needing verification. Treat both details cautiously if planning around them.
Iron Throne rescue sequence
Once the Iron Throne sequence begins, the listed default rescue window for Save the Gondians, Rescue the Grand Duke, and Retrieve Omeluum is six turns, five on Tactician, and eight on Explorer. These figures are reported by the community wiki and may be version- or difficulty-sensitive. The same listing says that completing Avenge the Ironhands without visiting the Iron Throne also ends these rescue opportunities.

Stop the Presses
After speaking to Ettvard Needle with Stop the Presses underway, one long rest tarnishes your reputation unless you alter the paper or kill Ettvard. If Gortash is defeated without first speaking to Ettvard, the report says news of Gortash’s death supersedes the article.
Can you take long rests without missing quests?
Yes, in most cases. A long rest restores resources and can advance camp scenes, but the deadlines above are tied to particular triggers rather than a universal rest counter. Camp scenes have prerequisites and priorities; multiple scenes may queue, and some can cancel after a defined number of rests. The bg3.wiki long-rest reference notes that partial rests can also trigger camp events without spending supplies.
Before resting or fast-travelling, check whether you have just approached a trapped NPC, active rescue, rubble, or visible emergency. If no specific deadline has been triggered, the available references do not support avoiding long rests as a general precaution.
