Baldur’s Gate 3 beginner’s guide: 12 things to know before starting BG3

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can start Baldur’s Gate 3 without knowing tabletop D&D. The game teaches its basic rules as you play, and your first run is more rewarding when you treat exploration, conversations, companions and saving as seriously as combat. These 12 principles explain the systems that matter most, from choosing a class to preparing for Patch 8’s current multiplayer and mod support.

1. You do not need tabletop D&D experience

Baldur’s Gate 3 uses ideas from Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, but you can learn the important parts in play. You do not need to memorize the tabletop rulebook or build a mathematically perfect character.

Ability scores and proficiency

Ability scores represent your character’s natural strengths, such as Strength for physical attacks, Dexterity for agility and many ranged attacks, and Charisma for several dialogue options. The score produces a modifier that is added to relevant rolls. Proficiency means your character is trained with a weapon, skill, saving throw or other category, adding a proficiency bonus when it applies.

Advantage, disadvantage and the d20

Most attacks and ability checks use a twenty-sided die. Advantage rolls two dice and keeps the higher result; disadvantage rolls two and keeps the lower. Bonuses and penalties matter, but creating advantage through positioning, conditions or spells can matter just as much.

Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

Actions, bonus actions and reactions

On a turn, a character normally has an action and may have a bonus action. Attacks, many spells and common abilities use the action; off-hand attacks, jumps, shoves and other abilities may use the bonus action. Reactions are triggered responses that you choose to use when their conditions occur, so read the prompt instead of spending them automatically.

Concentration and spell slots

A concentration spell requires the caster to maintain it, so casting another concentration spell ends the first. Taking damage can force a concentration check. Spell slots are limited resources for spells that consume them; read each spell’s description to see its range, duration, concentration requirement and slot level.

2. Choose a class for the play style you want

Class determines much of your early equipment, armor, weapons, spells and available actions. It does not require you to discover a single “best” build. Ability scores and proficiencies usually matter more than copying a supposedly perfect setup.

Simple starting directions

If you want to… Consider starting with… What to expect
Fight directly and stay durable Fighter Weapon-focused turns with straightforward defenses and damage.
Blend weapons with wilderness utility Ranger Ranged or melee attacks plus exploration and spell support.
Support allies and control fights Cleric Healing, buffs, defensive tools and powerful situational spells.
Use a martial character with a strong oath and dialogue identity Paladin Durability, melee damage and distinctive choices tied to your oath.
Sneak, scout and exploit openings Rogue Skill expertise, stealth and high damage when attacks are set up well.
Cast a broad range of powerful spells Wizard Fragile defenses offset by extensive spell choices and battlefield control.

Pick the fantasy you will enjoy making decisions for dozens of hours. A class that feels intuitive to you is a better beginner choice than a theoretically optimal one.

3. Build a party around different jobs

Your active party is limited, so avoid filling every slot with the same kind of character. A practical group covers durability, damage, skills, control and exploration utility, even if one character handles more than one job.

A useful beginner balance

Job What it contributes Questions to ask
Front line Durability, enemy attention and close-range pressure. Who can survive when enemies reach the group?
Reliable damage Consistent attacks against priority targets. Who can finish a dangerous enemy quickly?
Skill and dialogue coverage Perception, stealth, persuasion and other checks outside combat. Who opens conversations, spots danger and handles locks?
Control and utility Healing, buffs, disabling effects, area damage and problem-solving spells. Who changes the battlefield when direct attacks are poor?

You can change which recruited companions travel with you, so treat the party as a set of complementary tools rather than a permanent tier list.

4. Explore before committing to a fight

Many encounters change when you investigate first. Talk to creatures, inspect suspicious objects and look for alternate routes before selecting an attack.

Ways to improve your approach

  • Scout for high ground, cover, narrow passages and environmental hazards.
  • Use stealth to choose the opening position or avoid a fight temporarily.
  • Look for ladders, doors, tunnels and other routes around a guarded area.
  • Read what characters and objects reveal; information can unlock a safer solution.
  • Return later when an encounter is beyond your current capabilities.

Negotiation, delay and a different angle are legitimate solutions, not missed content.

5. Prepare for turn-based combat

Combat rewards preparation more than frantic speed. Before engaging, inspect enemies and terrain, then decide which threat must be removed first.

Preparation checklist

  • Check enemy resistances, defenses and vulnerabilities when the interface provides them.
  • Spread characters so one area attack cannot hit everyone.
  • Put ranged attackers or casters where they have clear sight and useful elevation.
  • Use bonus actions instead of ending a turn with them unused.
  • Focus damage on a dangerous target rather than lightly injuring several enemies.
  • Use terrain, surfaces and environmental objects when they create a favorable exchange.

A missed attack is not proof that your character is broken. Check the attack roll, target defenses, weapon range and whether advantage or disadvantage affected the result.

6. Rest often enough to see the story

Long rests do more than restore resources. Camp scenes and companion conversations are part of progression, so delaying every rest can cause you to miss context.

When to be cautious

The game sometimes signals that a nearby situation is urgent. If a quest appears time-sensitive, save before resting and consider resolving the immediate problem first. Otherwise, rest regularly enough to trigger camp events and let your party recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Save frequently and keep multiple slots

Use quicksave before major conversations, traps, unexplored areas and difficult fights. Keep several manual saves instead of relying on one autosave.

Why multiple saves matter

  • Dialogue and ability checks can branch into substantially different outcomes.
  • A failed roll may reveal a consequence you want to understand rather than permanently accept on a first learning attempt.
  • Separate saves protect you from discovering much later that an earlier decision closed a route you wanted to pursue.

Reloading is a practical way to learn the game’s systems. On a later run, you can choose to live with every roll; on a first run, use saves to understand how choices work.

8. Treat companions as characters, not equipment

Recruit broadly and speak with companions at camp. They have their own approval, goals and reactions, so the “strongest” party on paper may not be the most interesting group for your decisions.

THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

Consequences are intentional

A companion can react strongly to what you do or leave if your choices conflict with their priorities. That is a narrative consequence, not evidence that you have failed to play correctly. Bring people whose viewpoints you want to hear and check in with them as the story changes.

9. Dialogue checks can reshape the adventure

Conversations are systems, not just exposition. Charisma, Persuasion, Intimidation and Deception can open different paths, while your race, class, spells and discoveries may provide unique options.

Keep a face character or support

If you want more dialogue choices, make sure the party includes someone with strong relevant abilities or proficiencies. You can also examine the context before choosing a response: a prior discovery or a character’s background may matter as much as a raw Charisma roll.

10. Learn the inventory and tooltip tools

The game gives you a large number of equipment pieces, consumables and spell effects. A few interface habits prevent clutter and reduce wasted turns.

Useful habits

  • Mark items as junk when you are ready to sell or discard them.
  • Compare equipment rather than judging an item only by its armor or damage number.
  • Send camp supplies to camp so they do not fill your traveling inventory.
  • Read spell descriptions, especially range, duration, concentration and area effects.
  • Use consumables when they solve the current problem; saving everything for a hypothetical final battle can make ordinary encounters harder.

11. Multiplayer requires agreements before you begin

Co-op is a different style of campaign because every player can make choices that affect the shared story. Decide how the group will handle companions, private conversations, exploration and failed rolls before the first session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set expectations

  • Agree on who controls recruited companions and whether control can change between sessions.
  • Decide whether private dialogue is summarized, shared or left for the player who triggered it.
  • Choose whether the group reloads after a disastrous roll or accepts the result.
  • Set a pace for exploration so one player does not permanently rush everyone else.

Larian’s 2025 Patch 8 announcement says players on PC, Mac, Xbox and PlayStation 5 can use multiplayer with cross-platform progression and cross-play. Cross-play is enabled from the Gameplay settings, according to the same announcement.

12. Know the current Patch 8 context

Larian describes Patch 8, released in 2025, as the game’s final major update. It adds 12 subclasses, Photo Mode, cross-play and expanded official mod tooling. Minor hotfixes can still change bugs or compatibility, so check the current official notes if you use mods or are troubleshooting a recent update.

“Patch 8 now rounds off with cross-play, Photo Mode, and 12 new subclasses for you to enjoy.”

— Larian Studios

Technical preparation

Official support recommends an SSD for the Windows version and documents in-game mod support. Install on an SSD when possible, and treat mod compatibility as version-dependent rather than permanent.
