Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a lightning-focused Cleric/Sorcerer in Baldur’s Gate 3, the recommended split is Tempest Domain Cleric 2 / Storm Sorcerer 10. It combines Tempest Cleric’s ability to maximize Lightning damage with the Sorcerer spells and Metamagic needed to set up a high-damage turn. It is a focused burst build—not a universal best choice for healing, support, or control—and the guide behind it is labeled for Patch 8.
Why Tempest Cleric 2 / Storm Sorcerer 10 is the burst-damage pick
The split takes two Cleric levels for armor proficiency and the Tempest Domain’s Destructive Wrath, then puts the remaining ten levels into Storm Sorcerer. Destructive Wrath lets you spend Channel Divinity to deal maximum Lightning or Thunder damage on a qualifying damage roll. The build guide recommends it specifically for a Lightning damage strategy, rather than as an all-purpose Cleric/Sorcerer ranking.
The split is also spell-source dependent: the guide says this character learns Call Lightning through Sorcerer at Sorcerer level 6. Tempest Cleric’s domain grants Call Lightning at Cleric level 5, a milestone this build never reaches. See the Patch 8 multiclass build guide and the Tempest Domain reference.
How to build and use it
Choose the class split and ability scores
- Classes: Tempest Domain Cleric 2 / Storm Sorcerer 10.
- Suggested abilities: Charisma 17, Wisdom 14, Constitution 14. The guide recommends Charisma for Sorcerer damage spells, Wisdom for Cleric spells, and Constitution to help maintain concentration on Call Lightning. These are recommendations, not independently tested outcomes.
- Starting class: The guide recommends starting as Cleric to retain the desired starting saving-throw proficiencies. Confirm the relevant proficiencies in your game version before committing.
Set up Wet, then strike
- Make the target Wet with Create Water, or use water already present in the environment.
- Cast Call Lightning on the target. The guide suggests Heightened Spell to make the target’s saving throw harder; Quickened Spell is another option when you are willing to spend Sorcery Points.
- When you have a qualifying Lightning or Thunder damage roll, use Destructive Wrath and spend Channel Divinity to maximize it.
That sequence is the core of the recommendation: establish the Wet condition, then use a Lightning spell and Tempest Cleric’s damage-maximizing feature. The cited guide describes the damage calculation as an illustrative mechanics example, not as a measured benchmark.

What the multiclass gives up—and when you get it
In Baldur’s Gate 3, character level is the sum of class levels, but class features and spells are tracked by the level in each individual class. Multiclassing full casters combines class levels for spell-slot progression; it does not grant higher-level spells known or class features from a class you have not advanced far enough in. The class overview and multiclassing guide explain the distinction.
The timing matters during a campaign. Full casters reach 3rd-level spells at class level 5, so taking Cleric levels before reaching Sorcerer 5 delays that Sorcerer spell tier. The proposed endpoint is Sorcerer 10, but the route to it changes how soon the character becomes a capable Sorcerer. If you want Sorcerer 5 first, delay the Cleric dip or respec later; that sequencing follows from published progression rules, rather than from a tested leveling route.

Two Cleric levels also mean passing up Cleric milestones: Cleric 4 normally grants a feat, Cleric 5 grants 3rd-level Cleric spells, and further levels add subclass features. The build accepts those costs to retain Sorcerer progression. The Cleric class reference lists its class progression.
Is this the best split for your playstyle?
| Priority | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Lightning burst damage | Tempest Cleric 2 / Storm Sorcerer 10 is the focused recommendation: it pairs Destructive Wrath with Sorcerer progression and the Wet-then-Lightning setup. |
| Earlier Sorcerer spell progression | Reach Sorcerer 5 before taking Cleric levels if delaying 3rd-level Sorcerer spells is a concern; a later respec is another option. |
| More Cleric spells or subclass features | Invest more levels in Cleric, accepting fewer Sorcerer levels and a different timing for Sorcerer spells and features. |
| Healing, support, or control | Choose levels and spells around that role rather than treating the Lightning-burst split as a universal winner. The available references do not establish an objective ranking of every Cleric/Sorcerer split. |
Version note
The build guide is labeled for Patch 8, and the game’s Patch 8 notes provide that version’s reference point. Patches can change classes, items, and encounters, so check the build against the version installed on your platform; the cited material does not establish whether a later patch has superseded that baseline.
