The most reliable Drunken Master build direction in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a Dexterity- and Wisdom-focused Monk that uses alcohol to recover Ki, keeps moving with Drunken Technique, and exploits the Drunk condition before Sobering Realisation removes it. That is a practical build plan, not a proven best-in-slot setup: the available sources document the subclass mechanics, but do not establish a winning ability spread, multiclass split, damage ranking, or complete gear route.
What the Drunken Master does
Way of the Drunken Master is an official Monk subclass added in Patch 8. Monks choose their subclass at level 3. Larian describes its core loop as using alcohol to regain Ki and intoxicating enemies before sobering them with a Psychic-damage attack (Larian’s Community Update #34). Larian calls the subclass abilities homebrewed, so the video-game implementation should not be treated as an exact tabletop rules build (Larian’s Patch 8 announcement).
In play, it is a mobile Monk with a distinctive condition-and-Ki cycle: use alcohol for a limited Ki refill, apply Drunk to targets, benefit from that condition, and later sober a target with a Psychic-damage strike. The subclass also adds tools for disengaging, recovering from Prone, and answering a melee miss.
Build priorities
Ability scores and combat role
For a straightforward build, prioritize Dexterity and Wisdom for the Monk’s combat profile, then invest in Constitution for durability. This is a general recommendation, not a verified optimal point-buy spread: the available sources do not provide a tested ability-score comparison for this subclass. Preserve the Monk’s mobility rather than treating the character as a stationary damage dealer.

Class progression
Staying mostly or entirely Monk is the cleanest way to reach the subclass’s later features, including Sobering Realisation at level 9 and Drunkard’s Luck at level 11. Multiclassing can add benefits from another class, but those levels come at the cost of Monk and subclass milestones. Baldur’s Gate 3 assigns multiclass choices during level-ups, and class benefits and feat milestones depend on levels in each class; therefore, there is no evidence here that a particular split is numerically superior (PC Gamer’s Patch 8 and beyond build guide).

How to use the build in combat
Use movement and Disengage to choose engagements
Drunken Technique combines two punches with extra movement and Disengage, giving you a way to reposition without simply walking into every threat. Use that mobility to reach vulnerable targets, leave a dangerous melee, or line up a follow-up attack. The feature spends Ki, so weigh the positioning benefit against the resources needed for later turns.
Set up Drunk, then decide when to sober the target
Intoxicating Strike and Life of the Party make Drunk targets central to the subclass’s level-4 loop. At level 9, Sobering Realisation adds Psychic damage when you hit a Drunk target, but a successful hit also removes Life of the Party. Treat that as a timing choice: exploit the Drunk-target benefit while it is useful, then use the sobering strike when the added damage or removal of the condition suits the situation.

Keep Ki recovery and reactions in view
Cheeky Tipple restores half your Ki points, rounded down, by drinking alcohol once per day. It is a limited recovery tool, not a repeatable combat refill. Redirect Attack also competes for your reaction and costs Ki, so consider whether a counterattack is worth saving that resource for another feature or turn.
Gear and alcohol items
The BG3 Wiki identifies the Drunk equipment set as synergistic with the subclass and says Wine Goblets can apply Alcohol in combat without costing a bonus action (BG3 Wiki: Way of the Drunken Master). These are in-game items; the build does not require purchasing physical alcohol or accessories. The sources do not establish a complete act-by-act item route or a best-in-slot ranking, so treat the set as a gear direction rather than a mandatory checklist, and verify item effects and availability in your current game version.

Should you multiclass?
Choose a mostly single-class Monk route if reaching the Drunken Master’s later features is your priority. Multiclass if a specific benefit from another class matters more to your intended character, while accounting for the Monk features and level-based feat milestones you give up or delay. No tested comparison here establishes a best split, so choose for the tradeoff you want—more subclass progression, another class’s tools, or a balance between them—rather than relying on an unsupported damage claim.
