For a straightforward, damage-focused Karlach, build her as a single-class Berserker Barbarian. Choose Berserker at level 3, raise Strength at level 4, take Great Weapon Master at level 8, then raise Strength again at level 12—or choose Mage Slayer if her Strength is already where you want it. Berserker is a practical general-purpose recommendation, not a proven universal winner: there is no cited controlled comparison showing one Karlach build is best on every difficulty or for every party.
How to build Karlach level by level
Keep Karlach as a Barbarian through level 12. This progression prioritizes the class’s core combat features, then adds a heavy-weapon feat and further Strength or a situational choice.

Suggested ability scores
For the cited melee setup after respec, Dot Esports recommends Strength 16, Dexterity 14, Constitution 16, Intelligence 8, Wisdom 12, and Charisma 8. These are suggested values, not prerequisites. If you do not respec, adapt the level 4 and 12 increases to Karlach’s existing attributes rather than treating that exact spread as mandatory.

How to use Berserker in combat
Berserker’s appeal is its action flexibility. Frenzied Strike offers another melee attack, while Enraged Throw gives Karlach a ranged option and can knock a target prone. These choices let her respond when a target is out of reach or when another melee swing is not the best use of the turn.
Spend Frenzied Strike selectively
Repeated Frenzied Strikes impose an attack penalty. They are not accuracy-neutral extra attacks, so use them when the added pressure is worth the reduced chance to hit. Do not treat the option as a free, unlimited increase in reliable damage.

Use Enraged Throw for reach and control
Enraged Throw provides a way to contribute when Karlach cannot make the melee attack you want. Its ability to knock targets prone can also help disrupt an enemy, making it more than a simple substitute swing.
Is Berserker better than Wildheart for Karlach?
Berserker is the straightforward damage-focused default in the cited Karlach-specific guide, but Wildheart is a legitimate alternative. Its animal aspects offer distinct combat roles rather than one universally superior choice.

Larian’s Community Update #15 describes the Wildheart options. Compare them with Berserker by the role you need—damage and bonus-action use, survivability, mobility, or party support—not just by subclass name.
What about Path of the Giant?
Path of the Giant is another Barbarian subclass added in Patch 8. Larian described Patch 8 as its last patch to introduce new content, but that does not mean it was the game’s last bug-fix update: the official site lists Hotfix #36 on March 26, 2026. This guide keeps its practical comparison focused on Berserker and Wildheart because the cited Karlach-specific build guide evaluates those paths; it does not establish a performance ranking for Path of the Giant.

There is no cited named statistic, controlled test, or difficulty-by-difficulty benchmark comparing Karlach builds. Berserker is recommended here as a practical, damage-focused general-purpose choice, not as a demonstrated damage champion in every situation. In a developer guide published December 7, 2023, Nick Pechenin, Lead Systems Designer, advised players to choose a build that fits their preferences: “When it comes to best builds, it is our strong suggestion that the best build to play in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the one that will best represent your personality as you get immersed in the world of Faerun and the adventures that await.” Read the full advice in Xbox Wire’s developer guide.
