BG3 Hub Editorial’s guide, published July 18, 2026 and updated July 21, recommends Monk 8 / Rogue 4 as its default split, with Monk 9 / Rogue 3 as an alternative. It emphasizes mobile unarmed attacks and control—not a proven damage ranking for every party or difficulty.
Which Monk and Rogue subclasses should you choose?
Open Hand Monk / Thief Rogue for a general-purpose build
Open Hand / Thief is the strongest broadly useful pairing supported by the cited build guidance. The guide’s approach is to close distance quickly, make unarmed attacks, and use the character’s mobility and control in melee. A staff or club can still be equipped for a useful passive effect; the build does not require a particular item. BG3 Hub Editorial’s build guide presents this as its recommendation, not as the result of a controlled comparison.
Thief is the Rogue subclass that underpins the pairing. Larian’s 2023 multiclassing feature describes Thief’s Fast Hands as granting an extra Bonus Action in its example discussion. That helps explain the appeal of the subclass alongside Monk, but the article is not a current build ranking.
Way of Shadow for stealth-first play
If you would rather approach unseen and strike from concealment than focus on a general melee damage-and-control role, consider Way of Shadow. The subclass becomes available at Monk level 3 and is built around stealth and shadow-focused features. It is a thematic alternative; the available build guidance does not establish a best Monk/Rogue level split for it or show that it outperforms Open Hand / Thief. See the BG3 Wiki’s Way of Shadow page.

Monk 8 / Rogue 4 or Monk 9 / Rogue 3?
| Split | Why choose it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Monk 8 / Rogue 4 | BG3 Hub Editorial’s July 2026 guide recommends this as its default Open Hand / Thief split. | Four levels go to Rogue rather than Monk, so the character advances Monk features less far than a more Monk-heavy split. |
| Monk 9 / Rogue 3 | The same guide lists it as an alternative, favoring another Monk level over the fourth Rogue level. | It gives up the fourth Rogue level; the guide does not claim a measured performance advantage for either split. |
The useful distinction is progression, not a guaranteed damage result. BG3 characters have a total cap of 12 class levels, so each Rogue level replaces a level that could have gone to Monk. The BG3 Wiki’s class overview documents the class-level framework. The cited guide does not provide reproducible head-to-head damage data, and neither split should be treated as universally best for every difficulty, party composition, or role.
How does the build fight?
For the Open Hand / Thief version, make unarmed attacks the usual offense and use movement to reach priority targets. The cited recommendation also describes the character in terms of control, so the role is not only to deal melee damage but to help disrupt enemies. A staff or club may be worthwhile when its passive effect serves your character, but the guide does not make a weapon—or an accessory purchase—a requirement.

The Shadow version changes the emphasis: its defining appeal is stealth and striking from concealment. Choose it because that approach suits your playstyle, rather than assuming it has the same role or a proven damage edge over Open Hand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you change the build later?
Yes. Larian says an NPC encountered early in Act 1 lets players restart a build from level 1 and change proficiencies, attributes, spells, and cantrips. That makes it practical to test a Monk-heavy progression against a larger Rogue investment instead of treating the first choice as permanent. In its 2023 Community Update #21, Larian Studios wrote: “We want to encourage you to try new things, find fun combinations, and ultimately discover the playstyle that suits you best as you adventure across the Sword Coast and beyond.” The statement supports experimentation and respec; it is not a claim about current class balance.
