If Baldur’s Gate 3 crashes with a “Device Lost” error on PC, first close overlays and other nonessential apps, then test DirectX 11 instead of Vulkan. Next check for mods or leftover mod files, reduce graphics settings, and verify the game files. These are Larian-supported troubleshooting tests, not guaranteed repairs; the error alone does not prove your graphics card has failed.
Try these quick checks first
- Close potential software conflicts. Exit nonessential background apps before starting the game, especially overlays and graphics monitoring or tweaking tools. You can also test with chat apps, antivirus, or firewalls closed, but do not treat permanently disabling security software as a fix. - Switch graphics API. In the launcher, try DirectX 11 if you were using Vulkan, or compare Vulkan if you were using DirectX 11. Note which API was active and whether the crash changes. A difference helps describe the problem, but does not by itself identify its cause.
- Reduce rendering demands. Lower the graphics settings and resolution, try Windowed or Fake Fullscreen mode, and, if your monitor refresh rate is above 60 Hz, cap the game at 60 FPS in its options. Change one or a few settings at a time and record the result.
Check mods and verify the installation
Remove mod leftovers
If you use mods—or have used them before—follow Larian’s instructions for checking and removing leftover mod files. A previous mod installation can still be relevant even if you are not currently playing with mods enabled. Larian’s FAQ provides the applicable guidance.
Verify or repair the game files
- Steam: Use the game’s Properties page to find the local-file option labeled “Verify Integrity of Game Files.”
- GOG Galaxy: Open the game’s Manage installation menu and choose “Verify / Repair.”
Let the check finish, then launch the game and see whether the same crash occurs.
If the crash continues, collect useful diagnostics
- Open Windows Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs > Application.
- Find the recent error corresponding to the BG3 crash. Record the faulting application and faulting module details.
- Prepare a dxdiag report and relevant crash files, then send them to Larian support as its FAQ requests.
- Include a concise pattern description: whether you were using Vulkan or DirectX 11, what you were doing when the crash happened, and whether it occurs during combat or after a specific action.
These details help distinguish a repeatable game or software problem from other possibilities. The error text alone cannot determine whether the cause is the graphics API, a mod, an overlay, a game file, a setting, a driver, or hardware.

What the “Device Lost” message does—and does not—tell you
Larian’s PC FAQ addresses gameplay crashes broadly and recommends tests rather than defining “Device Lost” as one specific failure or promising a universal fix. Do not replace or buy a graphics card based only on this message; the steps above are intended to narrow the problem before drawing conclusions.
There is historical context for a game-specific Vulkan issue: Larian’s Hotfix #14 announcement, published August 24, 2021, said it fixed a Vulkan “Device Lost” error affecting some players. That old fix does not establish that a present-day crash has the same cause. A 2026 Larian forum thread includes player crash reports and a community-manager post about an update intended to address some crashes and performance issues. Those reports are anecdotal, not a universal diagnosis; make sure the game is up to date, but continue troubleshooting based on your own results.
