Spoilers for Act Three, Gortash’s death, Orin’s confrontation, and ending choices. There are two different answers, depending on what you mean by “chosen.” Any character can pursue a reported post-Gortash conversation about Bane’s blessing, but it points toward an endgame goal rather than an early reward. Only the Dark Urge gets the direct choice to accept Bhaal as their patron after confronting Orin.
Which route are you looking for?
| Route | Who can take it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Bane’s reported blessing conversation | A general character, after defeating Gortash | A conversation that points toward gathering the Netherstones and dominating the Netherbrain; it is not described as a standalone reward. |
| Bhaal’s offer after Orin | The Dark Urge | A direct choice to reclaim Bhaal’s chosen role, or refuse it and face the consequences. |
These paths are not interchangeable. The first is reported by a secondary walkthrough; the second is a Dark Urge-specific story decision. PiunikaWeb’s January 8, 2024 walkthrough describes the Bane conversation, while the BG3 Wiki’s Dark Urge reference covers the Bhaal choice.
How to pursue Bane’s reported blessing conversation
- Progress through Act Three and defeat Enver Gortash.
- Use Disguise Self before interacting with Gortash’s corpse.
- Cast Speak with Dead on the corpse.
- Ask what is required to receive Bane’s blessing.
The walkthrough reports that Bane’s answer points to doing what Gortash failed to do: obtain all three Netherstones, take control of the Netherbrain, and build an army of mind-controlled thralls. Treat this as an endgame direction, not a collectible blessing or a mid-game reward sequence.
What the walkthrough says about the conversation
It reports that the conversation permits five questions, including ones about the Steel Watch Foundry and Bane’s plan. It also says Gortash is the only one of the three Chosen whose corpse can be used to contact a Dead Three deity this way: Orin’s remains are not intact, and Ketheric is undead. These are claims from the walkthrough, not independently verified game testing. The article paraphrases the reported dialogue rather than presenting it as a verbatim transcript.

How the Dark Urge can become Bhaal’s chosen
After the Dark Urge confronts Orin in the Temple of Bhaal, the character can accept Bhaal’s offer to become his chosen again. Bhaal then tasks them with controlling the Netherbrain in his name. Accepting also grants the Slayer form if the character does not already have it. The Dark Urge reference describes this origin-specific choice.
If the Dark Urge refuses
Refusal has a severe consequence: Bhaal kills the character, after which Withers revives them and frees them from the Urge. If the character had already obtained the Slayer form, they lose it. This is not a route available to a general custom character.

What “Chosen of the Dead Three” means
The Dead Three are Bane, Myrkul, and Bhaal. Their principal Chosen are Enver Gortash for Bane, Ketheric Thorm for Myrkul, and Orin the Red for Bhaal. In the game’s story, they use the Crown of Karsus to command the Elder Brain; the Netherstones control the Crown and, through it, the brain. The BG3 Wiki’s Absolute reference outlines those relationships.
The Dark Urge’s connection is distinct: the origin’s backstory ties them to Gortash’s original plan before Orin’s betrayal. That history helps explain why the direct offer to become Bhaal’s chosen belongs to the Dark Urge storyline rather than being a general player option.
