Update Baldur’s Gate 3 to the latest version available for your platform first. If the crashes began after the original Patch 5 and you play on PC, test the game with all mods uninstalled, as Larian recommended when Patch 5 launched. If the crash continues, troubleshoot according to when it happens: startup and in-game crashes have different checks. These steps help narrow down possible causes; no single fix is established for every crash.
Patch 5 was released in 2023 as version 4.1.1.4061076. Later updates fixed specific crash cases, so a crash after Patch 5 is not by itself evidence of a current Patch 5 defect. Larian’s Patch 5 announcement and subsequent Hotfix #14 notes and Hotfix #35 notes document the original release and later, specific fixes.
Start with an update and a clean mod test
Check for an available game update on your platform and install it before diagnosing an older crash. The official notes show that later releases addressed particular crashes, not that every crash after Patch 5 has the same cause.
On PC, remove all mods for a test, then launch the game and see whether the same crash occurs. Larian’s Patch 5 announcement explicitly recommends checking whether a problem persists with all mods uninstalled, and contacting support if it does. A mod manager’s disable switch may not remove every mod file; Larian’s gameplay guidance says previously used mods can remain relevant and points players to files in both installation and profile folders. Follow Larian’s current PC gameplay-crash instructions for the applicable locations rather than deleting files at random.

If the game crashes during startup on PC
Try these checks in order. They are PC-specific; console and Mac players should use Larian’s instructions for their platform instead of applying PC folder paths.
- Verify the game installation. On Steam, use the game’s file-verification option. In GOG Galaxy, use Verify/Repair. Larian lists both in its PC startup-crash guidance.
- Close nonessential background apps and overlays. Then try launching again. This can help identify software that interferes with startup.
- Switch graphics renderer. If you launch with Vulkan, try DirectX 11; if you use DirectX 11, try Vulkan. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that one renderer is best for every system.
- Check for unexpected or stale files if the issue remains. Larian warns that old patch hotfix files left in the installation folder can cause startup crashes. If the launcher reports a data mismatch, consult its data-mismatch instructions to identify unexpected files; do not delete arbitrary game files.
If the game crashes during gameplay on PC
First repeat the clean mod test, including checking for files left by mods you used previously. Then try the other renderer—DirectX 11 or Vulkan—and see whether the same gameplay crash recurs. Record whether the crash happens at a particular action or location, but do not assume a symptom alone identifies a known bug.

Larian’s gameplay-crash FAQ covers mod files in the game installation and profile locations. Use its instructions for your installation rather than relying only on a mod manager to clean up files.
When to contact Larian support
If the issue persists after updating and completing the relevant checks, send Larian a report with enough detail to distinguish your case: platform and operating system, game version, whether the crash occurs at startup or during play, any error text, and whether the test was made with mods removed. Include the diagnostics appropriate to your platform. Larian’s file-retrieval instructions describe logs and crash reports for PC, Mac, and consoles; the files available are not identical across platforms.

Larian’s November 30, 2023 Patch 5 announcement advised players to test with all mods uninstalled and contact support if the issue persisted. That is a useful first diagnostic for problems that began with that release, but it is not proof that mods cause every crash. The later hotfix notes document fixes for particular cases; they do not identify the cause of an individual player’s current crash without further details.
