Baldur’s Gate 3 Monk Subclasses Ranked: Which Tradition Fits You?

For a Monk focused on direct unarmed combat, Way of the Open Hand is the strongest documented choice. Way of Shadow is the better fit for stealth and mobility, while Way of the Four Elements trades some martial focus for Ki-powered elemental abilities. Patch 8 added Way of the Drunken Master, bringing the roster to four, but the available detailed mechanics here are not enough to rank it fairly.

This is a playstyle ranking, not a measured damage tier list: the comparisons below are based on documented features, not controlled performance tests. Larian’s Community Update #20 introduced the first three traditions, and its Patch 8 announcement confirmed Drunken Master.

How the Monk subclasses rank

  1. Way of the Open Hand: Best-supported pick for unarmed combat, damage options, and control.
  2. Way of Shadow: Best for stealth, shadow-based tools, and repositioning.
  3. Way of the Four Elements: Best for elemental variety and spell-like battlefield effects, with Ki costs to weigh against other Monk actions.
  4. Way of the Drunken Master: Included in the current roster, but not ranked here because the cited material confirms its addition without establishing its detailed mechanics or comparative performance.

The order applies to the specific goal of comparing documented subclass identities, not to every build or encounter. A Shadow Monk can be the more useful choice for a stealth-focused party, and an elemental discipline may suit a player who values varied battlefield effects over a straightforward martial approach.

What each Monk subclass does

1. Way of the Open Hand

Open Hand builds on unarmed attacks with options to disrupt opponents. The BG3 Wiki’s mechanics reference lists three upgraded Flurry of Blows effects: Topple can knock a target prone, Stagger removes its reactions, and Push can send it back. These give the subclass several ways to shape a close-range encounter, beyond simply dealing damage.

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

At level 6, Open Hand gains a choice of damage manifestation: Psychic, Necrotic, or Radiant. Each adds 1d4 plus the Monk’s Wisdom modifier in its selected damage type. The subclass also gains Wholeness of Body at that level. At level 9, Ki Resonation lets the Monk mark enemies and use a blast that can hit nearby non-party targets; the listed blast radius is 5 m (17 ft). Tranquillity arrives at level 11.

That combination of unarmed specialization, control choices, and additional damage options makes Open Hand the most defensible first pick for a player whose priority is direct melee combat. The feature descriptions do not establish a damage-per-round advantage across builds or encounters.

2. Way of Shadow

Shadow is the stealth and positioning specialist. Its listed tools include Minor Illusion, bonus-action Hide, Pass Without Trace, Darkness, Darkvision, Silence, Cloak of Shadows, Shadow Step, and Shadow Strike. Pass Without Trace gives nearby allies +10 to Stealth checks; Darkvision has a listed range of 12 m (40 ft).

Shadow Step teleports the Monk between shadows and grants advantage on the next melee attack. Shadow Strike can be used from a hidden position. These abilities support scouting, approach, attack, and repositioning rather than the Open Hand’s more explicit focus on unarmed damage and control. Choose Shadow when moving unseen and reaching the right position matter more to your party than a direct unarmed specialization.

3. Way of the Four Elements

Four Elements adds elemental disciplines that spend Ki and deliver spell-like effects. Its disciplines include options such as Fangs of the Fire Snake, Fist of Four Thunders, and Water Whip. The subclass lets a player choose three disciplines at level 3, with more choices later; its save DC is based on 8 + proficiency bonus + Wisdom modifier. Improved Elemental Casting adds damage or effects to several abilities.

The appeal is flexibility: elemental abilities can influence the battlefield in ways a purely martial turn may not. The trade-off is resource use. Ki spent on a discipline is not available for another Ki-powered option, so its value depends on which abilities you choose and how you want to use the Monk. The documented features support calling it the elemental, hybrid-style choice, but not a universal claim that it is weaker or stronger in combat.

4. Way of the Drunken Master

Larian confirmed Way of the Drunken Master as one of the twelve subclasses added in Patch 8, released on April 15, 2025. Monk subclasses are selected at level 3. The announcement establishes that Drunken Master is part of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Monk roster, but does not give a detailed ability breakdown or a basis for comparing its performance with the other traditions. Leaving it unranked is more useful than guessing at its place.

What this ranking can—and cannot—tell you

The first three traditions were presented as distinct approaches: Larian described Open Hand as close-combat unarmed technique, Shadow as stealth and teleportation, and Four Elements as spell-like abilities followed by a rapid bonus-action punch. Those are useful identities for choosing a playstyle, but they are not equivalent performance measurements.

The mechanics details for the first three subclasses are drawn from the BG3 Wiki’s Open Hand, Shadow, and Four Elements pages, accessed in October 2026. Exact mechanics may vary with later game updates, platform, or mods; the Patch 8 announcement identifies itself as the final major patch, not a guarantee that no later hotfix or minor update can affect the game.
