For a peaceful Zhentarim outcome and access to Brem’s special stock, help Rugan and return the Caravan Strongbox unopened. Opening it and taking the Iron Flask makes Zarys and the Zhentarim hostile. The best route depends on whether Rugan and Olly survived the gnoll attack and what you have already done with the shipment.
What happens with each choice?

How to get Brem’s special stock
Keep the Caravan Strongbox sealed and return it to Zarys. This can advance the Act One quest “Find the Missing Shipment” and unlock Brem’s special stock. The quest reference lists a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check to pick the strongbox’s lock; opening it this way is not the peaceful turn-in route.
The caravan encounter is on the Risen Road, while the Zhentarim Hideout is beneath Waukeen’s Rest. You can meet Rugan and Olly during the gnoll attack, or learn about the shipment later by speaking with Zarys in the hideout. Risen Road reference and quest reference.
Choose based on your priority
- Peaceful access to Brem, with a chance at the reward: Leave the strongbox unopened and return it to Zarys. Save Rugan and Olly if they are still in danger; gold and Harold depend on the route and quest state.
- The Iron Flask, even at the cost of a fight: Open the box and take it, knowing the Zhentarim will become hostile.
- Keeping Rugan on the Zhentarim’s side: Do not take the shipment away from him. If he keeps it and reaches the hideout, the Zhentarim may treat your party as allies.
Why your earlier choices matter
“Help Rugan” can mean letting him retain the shipment, while returning the unopened box yourself is a different path through the quest. The outcome at the hideout can change if Rugan or Olly died during the gnoll encounter, if you retrieved the cargo, or if you opened it. If the game responds differently than expected, check the current quest state in your installed version: the community-maintained references describing these interactions do not identify a specific game patch or build.
