How do their stories and settings differ?
Baldur’s Gate 3: Forgotten Realms and a personal party
Baldur’s Gate 3 is set in the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms. Its story begins with a mind flayer parasite and develops through party relationships and consequential choices. Larian describes the game as a cinematic narrative and identifies seven Origin characters on its official game page. Its description says, “Every choice you make drives your story forward, each decision leaving your mark on the world.” That is the developer’s promotional framing, not an independent assessment.
Divinity: Original Sin 2: Rivellon and the Definitive Edition
Divinity: Original Sin 2 takes place in Rivellon. Larian describes the Definitive Edition as an updated version, noting a reworked Act 4, balance changes, and Story Mode. The studio says the edition was free for existing PC owners and is the console release; see its Definitive Edition FAQ. These details make it a natural pick if you want the earlier game’s world or prefer to have Story Mode available.
What do the combat systems offer?
Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as an evolution of turn-based combat based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Its official feature description highlights team-based initiative, advantage and disadvantage, roll modifiers, environmental interactions, and three difficulty settings. That gives players familiar with D&D a recognizable rules framework alongside tactical turn-based encounters.

Those details do not establish that Divinity: Original Sin 2 is less tactical or less engaging. Larian’s available material here does not provide an equally detailed, directly comparable combat overview for DOS2, so choosing between the two on tactical depth alone would go beyond what these official descriptions establish.

These are Larian’s figures, not independent measurements. They describe unlike categories in places, and a larger count does not prove a game is better or that its options will suit a particular player. Read the figures as a snapshot of what the developer reported in 2023, not a scorecard.
Which game fits your co-op plans?
Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 feature page specifies online multiplayer for up to four players. Patch 8, released April 15, 2025, announced cross-play and split-screen on Xbox Series S; see the Patch 8 announcement. Those platform-specific details matter: check the current listing for your exact platform and desired setup rather than assuming every local or cross-platform arrangement is supported. The sources here do not establish a directly comparable DOS2 co-op configuration.

Where can you play them?
Platform support has changed over time, so the exact platform and store listing should be checked before buying. Larian’s DOS2 FAQ lists PC/Mac, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and iPad, and says players who own both the Switch and Steam copies can use cross-save. A later Larian news update says DOS2 became available on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on December 15, 2025; see Larian’s news page.
For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian announced Patch 8 for PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox on April 15, 2025. Its official news and support pages also reported a native Steam Deck build in September 2025. Platform availability and specific features can vary by store, edition, and region, so confirm the current listing for your device.

So, should you play BG3 or DOS2?
- Pick Baldur’s Gate 3 for the Forgotten Realms, a D&D 5e-based rules framework, cinematic party storytelling, or online multiplayer for up to four.
- Pick Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition to experience Larian’s earlier RPG in Rivellon or to have Story Mode as an option.
- If you are deciding on combat alone, try to compare the actual systems in play: the official descriptions cited here do not provide a like-for-like account of DOS2 combat.
