For a straightforward single-class melee Warlock in Baldur’s Gate 3, choose the Fiend patron and Pact of the Blade, then raise Charisma toward 20. This route combines a flexible patron with Charisma-based pact-weapon attacks and an extra attack at level 5. It is a strong general-purpose recommendation, not a universal winner: Patch 8’s Hexblade is a more weapon-first alternative, while Great Old One and Fiend both suit ranged Eldritch Blast builds with different combat styles.
How to choose a Warlock subclass and build
Choose based on what you want to do in combat, rather than treating one patron as best for every character. A Blade Warlock can alternate melee attacks with ranged spells; an Eldritch Blast-focused Warlock can emphasize damage and control from a distance. Patch 8 also adds Hexblade, changing the options for characters who want to lead with weapons.
- Want a flexible melee character: Fiend with Pact of the Blade is a clear single-class starting point.
- Want weapon-first features from the start: consider Hexblade, added in Patch 8.
- Want ranged critical-hit control: Great Old One has a feature that can frighten the target of a critical hit and nearby enemies.
- Want a different defensive or mobility flavor: compare Fiend’s survivability and spell features with Archfey’s mobility- and defense-oriented alternative.
The class is built around a limited pool of Pact Magic spell slots that recover on a short rest and increase in spell level as the Warlock progresses. That makes spell timing part of the build: at level 5, for example, decide whether a second weapon attack is more valuable than spending a slot on a major control spell such as Hunger of Hadar. See the Warlock class reference for class progression and invocations.
Recommended build: Fiend Pact of the Blade, levels 1–12
This is a flexible single-class route for a character who wants to fight up close without giving up useful ranged options. The Fiend patron supplies a broadly useful set of patron features, while Pact of the Blade supports weapon attacks using Charisma rather than Strength or Dexterity.

Ability priorities
- Charisma: your main priority. Raise it toward 20 through ability increases or appropriate feat choices.
- Constitution: your next priority, supporting durability and concentration.
- Dexterity: keep enough for initiative and defense, taking your armor setup into account.
Level-by-level decisions
- Choose Fiend as your patron. Treat this as the flexible default for this route, not proof that it outperforms every other subclass.
- At level 3, choose Pact of the Blade. You can summon or bind a pact weapon, and its attacks use your spellcasting ability modifier instead of Strength or Dexterity.
- At level 4, take the Charisma increase as the simple default. A single-class Warlock receives feats at levels 4, 8, and 12.
- At level 5, use Deepened Pact’s Extra Attack to make an additional pact-weapon attack. Compare that option with using a Pact Magic slot on a high-impact spell such as Hunger of Hadar; the right choice depends on the encounter.
- At levels 8 and 12, continue increasing Charisma if it is not yet 20, or choose a feat that fits your weapon and combat plan.
- At level 12, consider Lifedrinker. This invocation adds necrotic damage equal to your Charisma modifier to melee weapon attacks.
Keep Eldritch Blast as a dependable ranged option even when building for melee. Agonizing Blast is a natural invocation choice for a Charisma-focused Warlock; check its current in-game description for the exact effect in your game version.
When to choose Hexblade instead
Hexblade is the Patch 8 alternative for a character whose priority is weapon combat from the outset. Its Hex Warrior feature supports Charisma-based weapon attacks and grants medium armor, shields, and martial weapon proficiency. Hexblade’s Curse focuses those advantages on one target: it adds damage equal to your proficiency bonus against that target and lowers the critical-hit threshold by one.

Later, Hexblade gains Accursed Spectre. Consider that feature as part of the subclass’s overall appeal alongside the pact and feat choices you want; the features alone do not establish that Hexblade is the best option for every weapon build.
Ranged Warlocks: Great Old One or Fiend
Great Old One for critical-hit control
Great Old One’s Baldur’s Gate 3-specific Mortal Reminder frightens a critical-hit target and nearby enemies until the end of their next turn. That makes the patron a distinctive fit for an Eldritch Blast character who values control as well as damage. Its appeal depends on whether that critical-hit-triggered effect fits your preferred playstyle; the available feature comparisons do not establish a universal damage ranking.

Fiend for a different mix of features
Fiend is also a reasonable ranged choice, with its own survivability and spell features. Its Dark One’s Own Luck boosts ability checks, not saving throws, so do not rely on it to improve a saving throw. Choose between Fiend and Great Old One based on which feature set better supports the way you want to approach fights.
Archfey for mobility and defense
Archfey is another option if mobility- and defense-oriented features sound more useful than Hexblade’s weapon support or Great Old One’s critical-hit control. These are different playstyle packages, not evidence of a single subclass ranking.

Which feats should a Warlock take?
For most builds, prioritize increasing Charisma toward 20. A single-class Warlock gets feat choices at levels 4, 8, and 12, so you can use those opportunities to finish the ability score or choose options that reinforce your role.
- Great Weapon Master: consider it only if your weapon plan and accuracy support make it a good fit. It is not a default requirement for every Blade Warlock.
- Alert: an option to consider if acting earlier suits your character, but it is not mandatory.
- Charisma increases: the uncomplicated default when your main ability score is not yet where you want it.
The best choice depends on your weapon, ability scores, and desired role. A melee character’s feat priorities need not match those of a ranged Eldritch Blast and control build.

Patch 8 and version caveats
This guide reflects Patch 8-era mechanics. Older guides may cover only Archfey, Fiend, and Great Old One because Hexblade was added in Patch 8. Check your game’s version and mod status before following a build, and use the in-game feature descriptions when a detail may have changed. Do not assume tabletop Dungeons & Dragons rules apply unchanged to Baldur’s Gate 3.
For the relevant patron and subclass features, see the Warlock class reference, Great Old One reference, and Hexblade reference.
