The current standard roster guide lists 22 characters, including additions from the Regal, Shadow, and Naturalist updates. Start with The Warrior; for most others, progress through the listed biome to obtain a building blueprint, return to New Ballbylon, and construct the corresponding house. A separate PC-only character, The False Messiah, is documented as a Twitch-extension unlock.
How character unlocks work
For most characters, the route has two parts: obtain a building blueprint by clearing the required biome, then build that structure at New Ballbylon. The game’s official Nintendo listing describes building up the settlement as a way to unlock further power-ups and characters. In practice, return to the hub and assign your harvesters to work on the blueprint’s building.
The table below follows the route names and conditions in Dexerto’s roster guide, which includes the Naturalist DLC. “Clear” refers to that guide’s stated biome condition; it does not establish a drop rate or promise that every blueprint appears on a particular run. DLC labels identify characters introduced in those updates.

Naturalist building costs
The Dexerto guide lists the Ball House at 100 Stone and the Unstable Tower at 100 Wood and 30 Stone. It describes each as a one-time build with no upgrade cost; these resource requirements may change in a game update.

Why some lists show 23 characters
The standard roster count is 22. The community-maintained BALL x PIT Wiki also documents The False Messiah, a PC-exclusive character unlocked by enabling a Twitch extension. The wiki says disabling the extension makes the character unavailable for runs and settlement tasks until the extension is restored. Because this is a platform- and setup-specific exception, check its availability in your game if you are pursuing it.

Launch-era lists with 16 characters omit later additions. The Regal update added The Falconer and The Carouser, the Shadow update added The Tiptoer and The Tunneler, and the Naturalist update added The Hoary Hoarder and The Ballbearer. Nintendo calls Naturalist the game’s “final free update” in its official listing, but future content could still change the roster. For players who had already cleared areas, official Regal update notes say new content unlocks through progression and that blueprints may still need to be found in levels.
