No single cause or guaranteed fix is established: the timing of the crash, installed mods, game files, and system setup can all help narrow it down.
Start with the crash pattern
Before changing anything, note when the game fails: before the menu, while loading, or during play. Also note whether you use Workshop mods, whether other games or Windows crash too, and whether a crash report appears. These clues help you choose what to check and what to tell support; none proves a cause on its own.
Eight checks for Barotrauma crashes
1. Restart Steam and your PC
Exit Steam, restart Windows, reopen Steam, and try Barotrauma again. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting starts with a fresh restart, but this is a basic diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure. Steam’s launch troubleshooting
2. Check the game version and your PC’s requirements
Make sure Barotrauma is up to date and compare your PC with the game’s current Windows requirements on Steam’s Barotrauma support listing. The listing’s stated requirements are:

These are the game’s listed Windows requirements. Separately, Steam says its client has supported Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024; that client note is not a replacement for Barotrauma’s game requirements.
3. Verify Barotrauma’s files in Steam
- Open Steam Library and right-click Barotrauma.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the process finish.
Steam says verification may take several minutes and can repair missing or corrupted game files. Some local configuration files may fail verification normally; Steam says that alone can be safely ignored. Steam’s file verification instructions

4. Test without Workshop mods
Disable your mods and retry the game. If the crash stops, re-enable mods selectively to identify whether one is involved. Updates can make a mod incompatible with the current game version, according to the community-authored Barotrauma troubleshooting guide (December 18, 2021).
That guide also describes unsubscribing and removing mod folders as a more thorough cleanup, but those steps are disruptive. It suggests deleting config_player.xml only as an additional measure for a severe mod-related problem; doing so resets game settings. Do not start with those cleanup steps when simply disabling mods can answer the first question.

5. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates and check for a current graphics driver through your PC maker or GPU maker’s official update route. Steam recommends keeping the operating system and drivers current for launch problems. The available guidance does not identify a particular driver version as a Barotrauma crash fix. 6. Close non-essential software
Close non-essential applications, then try launching the game again. Steam’s general guidance recommends disabling non-essential software because it can interfere with a launch. If closing something changes the result, test it as a clue rather than assuming a particular application is the cause. Steam’s launch troubleshooting

7. Consider display mode only for a matching startup problem
A Barotrauma developer suggested changing BorderlessWindowed to Fullscreen in config_player.xml in response to one October 2024 report involving an Acer Aspire VX5 laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti. The developer described a specific, mysterious hardware issue; this is a case-specific attempt, not a general recommendation for startup crashes. The developer’s forum reply
If your symptoms and hardware resemble that report and you choose to try it, preserve a copy of the original setting first and change only the display-mode value. Restore it if the change does not help.

8. Save the crash report and ask for help
Open Steam Library, right-click Barotrauma, then choose Manage > Browse local files. Look in the game folder for crashreport.log or a file named crashreport (number).log. When contacting support, include the report if available along with:
- Barotrauma version and Windows version
- CPU, GPU, and installed RAM
- When the crash occurs and what action triggers it
- Whether mods are enabled and whether other games or Windows also crash

Use the results to narrow the next step
- If the game works with mods disabled, investigate mod compatibility before changing Windows or configuration settings.
- If it still crashes after file verification and with mods disabled, include those results in a support request rather than repeating the same checks.
- If other games or Windows also crash, report that broader pattern; it may help distinguish a game-specific issue from a system-wide one, but does not diagnose the cause.
- If the crash report contains an error, preserve the file and share it with the hardware and trigger details above.
