It mixes first- and third-person fighting with a mode in which players command AI soldiers. Steam’s review snapshot on October 8, 2026 showed 71% positive from 1,374 English-language user reviews—“Mostly Positive”—but that changing score is not a critic consensus or a substitute for checking whether its multiplayer suits you.
What kind of game is Battle Cry of Freedom?
Flying Squirrel Entertainment’s game is set in 19th-century America and has players fight for the Union or Confederacy. Steam describes multiplayer combat from first- or third-person perspectives, alongside Commander Battles, where you take charge of an AI-controlled company rather than controlling only an individual soldier.
The store listing also describes specialist roles such as engineer and surgeon, artillery, cavalry, destructible environments, customizable uniforms, and organized regimental line battles. These are advertised features, not independent findings about how well the modes, roles, or systems work in practice.
The game was released on March 1, 2022, according to its Steam listing. The listing advertises 120-plus weapons, 70 ammunition types, 20 artillery pieces, 14 handcrafted battlefields plus randomly generated maps, and 57 music tracks. Those are developer-published counts, not independently audited totals.

What do the reviews say?
On October 8, 2026, Steam classified the game’s English-language user reviews as “Mostly Positive”: 71% of 1,374 reviews were positive. That is a snapshot of Steam user ratings, not a critic score, and both the percentage and review count can change. Check the live Steam listing for the current aggregate.
That score alone does not establish how approachable the controls are, whether battles feel balanced, how steep the learning curve is, or how active servers are now. The available evidence does not provide a defensible independent critical consensus on those questions, or verified current performance results. Treat those as practical things to check before buying, rather than assuming the aggregate answers them.

How historically accurate is it?
The developer explicitly draws a line between historical inspiration and simulation. Flying Squirrel Entertainment says: “While Battle Cry of Freedom is not a simulation game, we make no compromises to accuracy when it comes to cosmetics, such as 3D models or animations.” The listing also says gameplay may be changed where doing so makes for a more engaging experience, and that animations draw on historical drill manuals including Casey’s Infantry Tactics and Hardee’s Revised.
These are the developer’s claims, not an independent historical assessment. They support describing the game as historically inspired, with a stated emphasis on visual and animation accuracy; they do not establish that every mechanic, battle outcome, or detail is historically accurate. If you want a simulation first, the developer’s own description makes clear this is not presented as one.

What is known about updates and current support?
In a Steam Community post titled “The Future of Battle Cry of Freedom”, the developer said it continued development for an additional year after launch, culminating in a 2.0 update. That historical statement does not establish the game’s present support status, latest version, or server population. The listing identifies Steam as the distribution platform; the cited information does not establish console availability or a physical edition.

The advertised mix of player-controlled combat and AI-company command gives the game more than one way to approach a battle. It may interest players drawn to Civil War settings, coordinated multiplayer, and large-scale regimental combat. Whether those ingredients make for a good fit depends on your interest in its multiplayer and command systems; the published review aggregate and feature list cannot settle that for you.
