That is useful for groups that want a place friends can find without waiting for the host to come online—but it does not guarantee players or uninterrupted availability. EA also sets specific requirements: the full game is needed for persistent-server access, and hosting a published experience configured for 100 players requires Battlefield Pro.
What Portal changes for custom servers
Portal combines a discovery area for community-made experiences with tools for building and hosting them. Creators can modify existing templates or create an experience using game modes and custom rules. EA describes Portal as a way to make Battlefield experiences that go beyond the standard modes, rather than simply a list of private matches. EA’s Battlefield 6 FAQ and Portal overview explain the feature.
The practical boost is persistence: EA defines a persistent server as one that “remains visible within the Server Browser even without active players.” A community can therefore share a server that people can find and join when its members are ready, instead of relying on the owner to be online to activate it. Persistence is visibility, not a promise that the server will fill up, remain available without interruption, or attract an audience.
EA has separately discussed a Server Browser on its roadmap. A 2026 roadmap update said it would launch during Season 5, and a later community update discussed its design and features. Those announcements are not enough to establish the browser’s live rollout, platform or regional availability, or complete feature set as of October 8, 2026. Treat the Season 5 statement as a roadmap announcement, not confirmation that every planned browser feature is currently available. EA’s 2026 roadmap update and later community update are the relevant announcements.

What you need to host a persistent Portal server
- Full game: EA says access to persistent servers requires the full Battlefield 6 game.
- Battlefield Pro for 100-player hosting: EA says an experience can be configured for up to 100 players, but hosting a published experience set to that capacity requires Battlefield Pro. This is a condition for that capacity, not a blanket requirement for every Portal server.
- Published experience: An experience must be published before other players can access it. EA says it goes through a moderation check first; its Help page estimates that check takes around three hours. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed turnaround.
These requirements and capacity details are in EA’s FAQ and its Portal support guide.
How to create and host a Portal experience
1. Build the experience in the web builder
Use the Portal web builder to start from a template or create a custom experience. EA’s support instructions describe TypeScript for writing game rules and logic, and the SDK for code and spatial, map, or level edits. The amount of customization depends on the kind of experience you are making.

- TACTICAL DESTRUCTION — Turn the environment into a weapon by demolishing structures, reshaping the battlefield, and using reactive destruction systems for strategic advantage.
2. Publish it and allow for moderation
Publish the experience so it can be accessed by others. EA says a moderation check happens before it is ready and estimates around three hours for the check; timing may vary.
3. Set up the server in game
Use the in-game hosting flow for the published experience. Give the server a name and description so players can identify it. Hosts can also add a welcome message and periodic messages, and can set a password for friends-only play. Without a password, other players searching for the hosted experience may be able to join.

4. Share the experience code
Share the experience code with the people you want to find it. EA’s Portal 101 guide covers hosting details, while EA Help’s Portal instructions explain creation and publishing.
Verified and custom community experiences are not the same
EA distinguishes Verified Community Experiences from Custom Community Experiences. The designation matters for progression: EA says verified experiences grant the same categories of XP earned in official modes, including challenge, badge, and accolade progression. Do not assume every custom experience offers identical progression; check its in-game designation and current rules before choosing it for a particular unlock.

- BATTLEFIELD COINS CURRENCY — Use Battlefield Coins as in‑game currency to unlock a wide range of optional content through the in‑game Store.
- COSMETIC CUSTOMIZATION — Spend Battlefield Coins on Soldiers, Weapon Packages, Vehicle Skins, and cosmetic accessories to personalize your battlefield experience.
- BOOSTERS AND EXTRAS — Purchase gameplay boosters and additional cosmetic items to enhance progression and visual style without impacting core balance.
- BATTLE PASS ACCESS — Battlefield Coins can be used to purchase the Battle Pass, unlocking seasonal rewards, cosmetics, and progression content.
Portal play offers XP and progression opportunities, but the available progression depends on the experience type and EA’s current rules. EA’s FAQ describes the distinction and the stated benefits for verified experiences.

Portal gives Battlefield communities creation tools, hosting controls, and persistent visibility that can make a community server easier to find when it is empty. EA has also announced a separate Server Browser roadmap feature intended to support discovery. The first is part of Portal’s described capabilities; the browser rollout should be understood according to EA’s dated roadmap announcements, not assumed from the persistence feature alone.

- THE NEW STANDARD OF FPS COMBAT: With overhauled gunplay and tactical movement, from crouch sprint to drag and revive, every shot and movement is more instinctual and precise. The ultimate all-out warfare experience. This is Battlefield 6.
- MULTIPLAYER Victory, however you envision it. Battlefield 6 has more ways to win than ever before.
- GLOBAL SCALE CAMPAIGN Join an elite squad of Marine Raiders fighting relentlessly to save a world on the edge of collapse.
- PORTAL Battlefield Portal is a massive sandbox where creators and players can push Battlefield to the limit. Take unprecedented control of your environment by moving, scaling, and duplicating objects.
For a group deciding whether to use Portal, the key questions are whether it needs a persistent listing, whether the experience can use a lower player capacity or requires Battlefield Pro for 100-player hosting, and whether the experience’s verification status supports the progression members want. A persistent listing solves the “host has to be online first” problem; it does not by itself solve availability, population, or progression differences.
