Start with the tutorial, pause often to read tooltips, and learn one system at a time. Europa Universalis V (EU5) is a historical grand strategy game in which population needs, goods and trade, estates, diplomacy, warfare, and social development affect one another. A manageable first campaign is less about finding a perfect move than understanding how these systems connect.
What should you learn first in EU5?
Begin with the game’s tutorial, then take your time: pause to inspect tooltips and focus on one mechanic at a time. EU5 Hub’s third-party beginner guide suggests playing at speed 2 or 3 while learning. Those are recommendations from that guide, not official instructions or a guarantee that a particular pace suits every player.
- Complete the tutorial. Treat it as an introduction to the interface and core decisions, not a test you need to rush through.
- Pause when something is unclear. Read the relevant tooltips before changing a policy, starting a project, or committing to a war.
- Pick one learning focus. For example, follow how population needs and goods relate to domestic management before trying to master diplomacy and warfare at the same time.
- Expand your focus gradually. Once domestic management feels more legible, pay closer attention to alliances, armies, and longer-term development.
EU5’s scope is broad by design. Paradox describes a game about ruling a nation while managing its people and estates, negotiating with other states, fighting wars, and developing production and trade. You do not need to understand every system before starting; you do need to notice when one decision affects another.
Manage people and goods, not just money
A useful early mental model is that the country is more than its treasury. Paradox says population needs are central to the game: its launch announcement states, “For the first time, Europa Universalis players must devote attention to the needs of their population, as the supply of food and other necessities will dictate the strength of their empire.” The same announcement describes goods and crops as part of production and trade.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practical terms, check what your population needs and how your country produces or obtains goods, alongside your finances. Avoid assuming that a healthy treasury alone means your country is well managed. The published feature descriptions establish the importance of necessities and goods, but they do not provide a universal build order or economic threshold for every nation.
Choose a first nation by what you want to practise
There is no universally easiest nation for every new player. EU5 Hub’s beginner guide offers these options by learning focus; its difficulty labels and opening suggestions are third-party judgments, not official Paradox ratings. Check that a suggested opening still fits the version you are playing.

| Nation | EU5 Hub guide label | Suggested learning focus | Guide’s suggested direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castile | Easy | Broad introduction | Unite Iberia, then consider colonization. |
| Portugal | Easy | Trade and exploration | The guide describes lower military pressure and suggests exploration, trade, and colonization. |
| Ottoman Empire | Easy | Warfare | Pay attention to the Balkans, Constantinople trade, and the navy. |
| France | Medium | Diplomacy | The guide points to the Hundred Years’ War and coalitions. |
Choose based on the system you want to practise, rather than treating a label as a promise of a safe or uncomplicated campaign. Castile is the guide’s broad option; Portugal emphasizes trade and exploration; the Ottomans put warfare in the foreground; and France offers a diplomacy-oriented direction.
Bring diplomacy and warfare in after the basics
Once you have a handle on domestic management, start connecting it to foreign policy. Paradox’s feature descriptions include estates, alliances, favors, and threats as parts of diplomacy. In war, they describe armies, levies, mercenaries, and commanders, with standing armies developing later. These are related systems rather than isolated buttons: consider what commitments a conflict creates for the country you are trying to govern.
