The art team’s account describes a connected process—from studying a character’s history and choosing recognition anchors to building movement, effects and costume variants. Cyclops provides a concrete example, while art director Dino Ma explains the broader visual style.
Where does character design start?
The art team says it begins by researching Marvel Comics storylines and specific depictions of the character, then broadens its references to include movies, games, animation and toys. The aim is to build a fuller understanding of the character’s identity, rather than treating one image or adaptation as the sole template.
That research informs what must remain recognizable before the team decides what can change. The team names costumes, powers, logos and weapons as important anchors, along with the immediate impression a hero makes on screen. Hulk’s size and Spider-Man’s agility illustrate how a defining quality can be legible even before a player studies costume details.
As the art team puts it, “Strengthening and maintaining these elements is essential to ensuring that players can instantly recognize and call out the character’s name at first glance.” That goal creates a balance: the design needs enough familiar cues to read as the Marvel character, but it also has to belong to Marvel Rivals’ own visual identity.

How does the team reinterpret a hero without losing recognition?
Cyclops shows how familiar source material can guide a new design without requiring a direct copy. The team drew on classic comic designs while pursuing a futuristic, fashionable and streamlined look. It points to the costume’s cut, gold tactical straps and the iconic energy-suppressing visor as parts of that interpretation.
Art director Dino Ma describes a broader approach that carries a 2D sensibility through 3D development: “The real key to our success was keeping a 2D mindset throughout the development process, adhering to the stylistic characteristics and aesthetics of 2D art.” In his account, expressive, exaggerated forms and bold color help define the look, drawing on anime, animated films, graphic packaging and Marvel’s own visual history.

Ma says the rendering approach combines stylized textures with physically based rendering (PBR) and non-photorealistic rendering (NPR). The point is to retain detail while serving a stylized result; his description should not be read as a claim that every asset uses identical settings.
How do concepts carry through 3D production?
The interview frames the pipeline as moving from references and concept art into modeling, texturing, rigging and animation, but it does not identify specific software, texture maps or a complete internal production manual. Its Cyclops example gives more detail about the design and rigging decisions than about the technical modeling and texturing steps.

Cyclops’s rig was described as relatively standard, but his default visor made the eye area a particular concern. The rig needed to support expressive animation around the visor and also accommodate alternate costumes that do not include it. This is a practical example of how a visual design decision can affect implementation: the character’s signature accessory cannot come at the cost of expression or costume flexibility.
How are movement and skills developed?
For Cyclops, the team says it establishes basic actions—idle, running and jumping—before developing skill animations. These foundational motions set the character’s movement style, giving later abilities a coherent physical base. The team prioritizes function while drawing on signature moves from the comics.

That order links character acting to play: a skill should work as an in-game action while still feeling rooted in the hero’s established identity. The interview does not describe a formal animation scoring system or quantify how those goals are evaluated.

Effects are not just decoration in the team’s description; they are a major part of how a character reads. The art team says, “In Marvel Rivals, visual effects are central to representing each character’s identity.” It describes combining a shared comic-inspired rendering framework with character-specific materials, intellectual-property elements and dynamic rhythm.

Presentation can extend beyond an ability’s immediate effect. The team says hero entrances and MVP highlights can create a mini-narrative by bringing together a costume, animation and environment. That gives the character’s identity room to register in moments designed for spectacle as well as during active combat.
How do alternate costumes stay recognizable?
Costumes can introduce new ideas, including seasonal themes, while retaining cues that help players identify the hero. Ma says the team uses mood boards built from keywords and reference images, and collaborates with Marvel Games to settle key iconic imagery. Designs may draw on original concepts and material from Marvel’s history, with seasonal themes offering another direction; the first season’s Eternal Night Falls vampire theme is one example.
For alternate costumes, the art team says it preserves the character’s body silhouette, logos, signature weapons and color schemes. These elements act as continuity anchors while the surface design changes. The team also identifies visual clarity in multiplayer combat as a concern, but it has not published a numerical readability benchmark in the interview.
What the interviews do—and do not—establish
The interviews explain design principles and selected production decisions, not a full studio operations guide. They do not disclose character production time, team size, budgets, a current tool list or quantified performance targets. The account is useful for understanding how the team connects Marvel references, visual style and implementation, but it should not be mistaken for a complete or necessarily current internal workflow.
