Verdict: The BenQ EX2780Q is still a capable 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor, but it is now primarily a used or renewed-market purchase. Its 144Hz IPS panel, useful built-in 2.1 audio, remote control and USB-C video input make it unusually convenient for mixed gaming and entertainment. Mediocre contrast, entry-level HDR, a tilt-only stand and the lack of USB-C charging make it a poor choice at prices close to newer 165Hz or 180Hz displays.

Buy it when the discount is substantial and those convenience features matter. Skip it for serious HDR, laptop docking, height-adjustable ergonomics or competitive esports.

Design, controls and everyday usability

The EX2780Q’s metallic-gray styling, integrated speakers and remote make it feel more like a small all-purpose entertainment display than a stripped-down esports monitor. The remote can change inputs, volume and picture modes and navigate the on-screen display from a sofa or desk. A used example may not include it, so confirm it is in the box before paying a premium.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Ergonomics are less impressive. The supplied stand only tilts, so users who need eye-level adjustment will likely want a monitor arm through the 100×100mm VESA mount. The stand’s footprint and cable arrangement are otherwise straightforward.

Picture quality for games and work

Sharp QHD image and IPS viewing angles

2560×1440 at 27 inches remains a sensible middle ground: visibly sharper than 1080p without the GPU load of 4K. IPS viewing angles suit shared screens, and the wide-gamut, 10-bit-capable specification can produce richer color than a basic sRGB office monitor.

“10-bit” is a capability claim, not proof of professional native 10-bit output or accurate calibration. Actual results depend on the signal path, dithering or frame-rate control, gamut mode and calibration.

AOC 27" Gaming Monitor QHD 260Hz Overclocked IPS NVIDIA G-SYNC Q27G41ZE
  • 27” QHD IPS DISPLAY: Enjoy stunning detail and vibrant color with a 2560x1440 Quad HD resolution on a 27-inch IPS panel, offering wide viewing angles and precise image quality.
  • 240HZ REFRESH RATE & 0.3MS RESPONSE TIME: Take competitive gaming to the next level with a blazing-fast 240Hz refresh rate (via DisplayPort) and ultra-responsive 0.3ms MPRT for minimal blur and maximum clarity.
  • ADAPTIVE-SYNC SUPPORT: Say goodbye to screen tearing and input lag with Adaptive-Sync for fluid, uninterrupted performance across both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs.
  • TILT ADJUSTMENT: Customize your setup with -3° to +21° tilt range for ergonomic positioning.
  • ENHANCED GAMING FEATURES: Includes Shadow Control, Game Mode presets, and a user-friendly graphical OSD menu for fast and intuitive performance tuning.

Contrast and uniformity are the compromises

BenQ and Tom’s Hardware quote approximately 1,000:1 native contrast. RTINGS found mediocre contrast and middling black uniformity, with unit-to-unit variation possible. Dark games and films can therefore look gray or uneven in a dim room, and there is no local dimming to improve HDR blacks. Backlight bleed and gray uniformity should be checked on a used unit rather than assumed from another owner’s sample.

Gaming performance

144Hz and FreeSync

RTINGS describes the EX2780Q as a good gaming display with low input lag, a high refresh rate and low response time overall. 144Hz makes camera movement and desktop scrolling smooth, while FreeSync can reduce tearing when frame rates fluctuate. It is a useful mainstream gaming speed, not a current premium one: newer QHD monitors commonly offer 165Hz, 180Hz or more.

Advertised 5ms or 1ms figures do not describe every transition at every refresh rate. Response-time behavior changes at 144Hz and 60Hz, and aggressive AMA/overdrive can create bright inverse-ghosting trails. Use the AMA setting that gives the cleanest motion in your games, not automatically the highest option.

Acer Nitro 27in QHD 2560x1440 IPS 180Hz Gaming Monitor KG271U N3bmiipx
  • Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
  • Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
  • New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.

Competitive FPS positioning

The monitor is fast enough for ordinary competitive play, but it is not an esports specialist. Players who prioritize maximum motion clarity and latency should choose a modern 240Hz or 360Hz display, accepting the loss of QHD detail, speakers and general-purpose features.

Recommended PC setup

  1. Set the operating system to 2560×1440.
  2. Select 144Hz in advanced display settings.
  3. Enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync in the monitor menu, then enable compatible VRR in the GPU control panel.
  4. Use a suitable DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 cable and confirm the monitor’s information screen reports 144Hz.
  5. Test AMA/overdrive modes in a dark and a bright game, keeping the least distracting setting.

Not every unit behaves identically; RTINGS specifically notes variation in measurements such as gray uniformity.

HDR and HDRi: a bonus, not a reason to buy

The EX2780Q accepts HDR10 and carries a DisplayHDR 400 designation, but its approximately 1,000:1 contrast, limited brightness and lack of local dimming prevent high-end HDR impact. Highlights can be brighter and the signal range wider than SDR, yet blacks remain far from OLED or Mini-LED quality.

ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQM5A 27 Inch 1440p 300Hz G-SYNC Gaming Monitor
  • High-Resolution QHD Gaming Display: 27-inch QHD (2560x1440) gaming monitor with 300Hz refresh rate designed for professional gamers and immersive gameplay
  • Fast IPS Technology with Rapid Response Time: ASUS Fast IPS technology enables a 0.3ms (GTG) response time(min.) for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates
  • Advanced Motion Blur Reduction: ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync (ELMB Sync) technology enables ELMB and variable-refresh-rate technologies to work simultaneously to eliminate ghosting and tearing for sharp gaming visuals
  • Convenient Settings Management: DisplayWidget Center enables easy monitor settings adjustments with a mouse
  • Enhanced Dark Scene Visibility: Shadow Boost enhances image details in dark areas, brightening scenes without over-exposing bright areas

BenQ’s HDRi modes use an ambient-light sensor and content-aware processing. Tom’s Hardware found strong-looking color in some material but also reported darker scenes becoming darker. Compare standard HDR, HDRi and SDR with your own games and films; SDR may look more balanced for desktop work, and game-specific HDR calibration remains important.

Speakers and media use

The 2×2W drivers plus 5W woofer are the EX2780Q’s standout feature. Tom’s Hardware considered the audio impressive for a monitor, and the remote makes volume changes practical for console or living-room use. It is better than typical thin monitor speakers and useful for casual games, video calls and streaming, but it is not a replacement for headphones or dedicated desktop speakers. Individual units can differ in balance or distortion. A headphone output is included.

What USB-C does—and does not—do

USB-C carries DisplayPort Alt Mode video and data, allowing a compatible laptop or MacBook to connect directly. It does not provide USB Power Delivery, so the laptop still needs its own charger. This is display connectivity, not a modern one-cable dock with 65W, 90W or 100W charging. The source USB-C port must itself support DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the cable must support the required video/data functions. BenQ advises checking the source device manual on its product page.

Console compatibility

The two HDMI 2.0 inputs are suitable for 1440p-class high-refresh console output where the console, game, firmware and cable support it. HDMI 2.0 does not make this a 4K/120Hz HDMI 2.1 monitor. After connecting a PS5 or Xbox Series console, verify the reported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR status in the console settings. BenQ discusses Xbox VRR across its MOBIUZ range, but that broad statement should not be treated as a guarantee for every EX2780Q setup.

Common setup problems

It is stuck at 60Hz

  • Select 2560×1440 and 144Hz in the operating system.
  • Try DisplayPort if HDMI does not expose 144Hz.
  • Check the cable, GPU driver and source device’s 1440p bandwidth.
  • Try another input and confirm the refresh rate in the monitor OSD.

USB-C does not charge the laptop

That is expected: this model has no USB Power Delivery.

HDR looks dim or worse than SDR

  • Compare SDR, standard HDR and HDRi.
  • Run the game’s HDR calibration and avoid global desktop HDR when SDR applications look washed out.
  • Remember that DisplayHDR 400 has no local dimming and limited peak brightness.

FreeSync flickers

VRR behavior depends on the GPU, driver, game, frame-rate range and HDR combination. Test the games you actually play, adjust overdrive, and use a fixed refresh rate if flicker is distracting.

Buying a used or renewed EX2780Q

BenQ still hosts an official product page, but current search visibility is dominated by secondary-market listings and no dependable new-retail price is established. Check the actual listing’s condition, shipping, warranty and return policy rather than relying on launch pricing. Current eBay listings are one availability signal.

Inspection checklist

  • Remote, stand, power cable and VESA hardware are included.
  • DisplayPort reaches 144Hz; both HDMI inputs and USB-C video work.
  • No dead pixels or severe backlight bleed are visible on test patterns.
  • Speakers are free of buzzing, distortion and channel imbalance.
  • OSD joystick, volume controls and saved picture settings work.
  • The seller accepts returns and any advertised warranty is valid or transferable.

Because it is an older model, the price should be substantially below a current 27-inch QHD 165–180Hz monitor. Pay more only when the remote, 2.1 audio or USB-C video solves a problem a newer display does not.

How it compares with alternatives

Alternative Choose it when… Important difference
BenQ MOBIUZ EX2710Q You want a newer BenQ gaming model at a similar price. 165Hz QHD IPS, FreeSync Premium, HDR400, HDRi and 2.1 audio; confirm exact connectivity and remote contents.
BenQ EX271Q You need a more modern laptop and productivity setup. Current listings describe 180Hz, USB-C 65W charging and KVM; verify speakers and remote on the exact listing. See current retailer results.
Gigabyte M27Q You prioritize a USB hub, KVM and productivity connectivity. Compare the exact revision, stand, speakers, motion and current price; the EX2780Q has the stronger built-in audio package.
Dell UltraSharp U2721DE Office ergonomics and USB-C charging matter more than gaming speed. Better stand and USB-C Power Delivery, but not a high-refresh gaming alternative.
BenQ GW2790Q You want a current office-oriented QHD monitor. 100Hz and office features; not a substitute for 144Hz-plus gaming.
Modern 240Hz monitor You are a serious competitive FPS player. Higher motion clarity and refresh rate, usually with fewer media-focused features.

Who should buy the EX2780Q?

  • Buy it for discounted 27-inch QHD gaming with unusually useful speakers, a remote, IPS viewing angles and USB-C video.
  • Buy conditionally for mainstream PC or console gaming when its price is clearly below newer 165Hz/180Hz models.
  • Skip it for strong HDR, deep blacks, USB-C charging, height adjustment, modern docking, a current full warranty or elite esports performance.
