For a small relaxation channel, start with a scheduled, horizontal live stream built around one specific atmosphere—such as a quiet rain room or a slow nighttime soundscape. Use audio and visuals you made or are properly licensed to stream, and give the broadcast a recognizable identity rather than relying on a generic loop. Consider moving to 24/7 operation only after you can keep the stream reliable and your own audience data suggests the extra hours help. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that continuous broadcasting performs better for small channels.
Choose a format viewers can recognize
Make one clear listener promise
Define what the stream is for before choosing its length or visuals: sleep, quiet reading, study, or a particular soundscape. Use that promise in the title and description, and make the audio and imagery feel authored for it. A focused concept gives returning viewers a reason to choose your stream over an interchangeable background loop.
Build with original or cleared material
Create the audio and visuals yourself or use material whose rights explicitly cover streaming on YouTube. YouTube’s live-stream terms require providers to have the necessary rights to exploit their content, including music licensing rights. Music being available on another service does not establish that it is cleared for a continuous YouTube broadcast.
Start with scheduled sessions, not an always-on commitment
Schedule a dependable block of streaming time first. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt into notifications; scheduling does not guarantee discovery. Use the time to establish a cadence you can maintain and learn which atmosphere, presentation, and session timing your viewers respond to.

Do not treat 24/7 uptime as a growth tactic with a proven result. YouTube’s published guidance does not compare continuous and scheduled streaming for small relaxation channels or identify a best stream length. Extend the hours only when your delivery is dependable and your channel’s own analytics give you a reason to do so.
Choose horizontal or vertical for the viewing experience
Horizontal: the practical starting point for long ambient viewing
For a relaxation stream intended to sit alongside reading, work, or sleep, horizontal is a sensible initial format. YouTube lists horizontal live ad formats and clickable links, which can matter when the experience is built around longer viewing or viewers need links in the description or chat.

Vertical: choose it when Shorts-feed discovery is a priority
YouTube says vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed, but the format has different features: it does not support live pre-roll and mid-roll ads or clickable links. Choose vertical deliberately for that discovery context, and check YouTube’s current feature details before committing to a format.
Set up the stream and make it easy to find
- Pick a stream method. YouTube’s live setup guidance lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; the format does not require a particular hardware product. Choose the method that lets you deliver the audio and visual presentation reliably.
- Schedule a stream block. Give viewers an upcoming event they can find and opt into notifications for. Keep the cadence realistic enough to maintain.
- Write a precise title and description. State the intended atmosphere or use—such as a quiet rain-room for reading—and describe what the stream actually contains. Avoid promising a listening experience you cannot control.
- Use tags sparingly. YouTube says tags usually play only a minimal role in discovery; they are not a substitute for a clear title, description, or distinct channel identity.
- Review the live-stream eligibility requirements. YouTube’s setup guidance includes having no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. That is an eligibility rule, not a performance benchmark.
Keep originality, rights, and monetization in view
Make the channel recognizably yours
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. The policy page says its July 15, 2025 update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material with little distinct value is ineligible under the existing policy; YouTube described this as a clarification, not a change to its reused-content policy. The page warns: “If we cannot clearly tell that you made the content, monetization may be removed from your entire channel.” Build meaningful variation and a recognizable authored identity into the experience rather than treating a template loop as the whole channel.

Do not promise uninterrupted ad-free listening
Eligible channels may earn from live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships. Eligibility is conditional, and YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. If you enable monetization, viewers’ ad experience is not wholly under your control.

Move from scheduled sessions toward 24/7 only when you can sustain reliable delivery and have observed evidence in your own audience and reliability data that more uptime serves viewers. Track whether people return, how they use the stream, and whether the operating burden is manageable. The platform guidance reviewed here does not settle whether this particular channel will do better with continuous uptime; that decision has to come from your own results.
