OBS Studio is the best starting point for flexible 4K desktop capture, Camtasia suits tutorials that need recording and editing together, and NVIDIA ShadowPlay is the gaming-focused option for compatible NVIDIA systems. There is no established head-to-head test here that proves one recorder is universally fastest or best-looking. Choose by what you are recording, your hardware, and whether editing is part of the job.
What does 4K screen recording mean?
Before choosing software, decide which 4K format you mean. TechSmith defines Ultra HD (UHD) as 3,840 × 2,160 pixels and DCI 4K as 4,096 × 2,160 pixels. Camtasia’s documented recorder capability is up to UHD on capable systems; that is not a blanket claim of DCI 4K support across recorders. See TechSmith’s 4K content guidance.
A recording set to 3,840 × 2,160 is not necessarily native 4K capture if the source was lower resolution and enlarged. For genuine 4K/60 capture, the display, capture path, frame rate, encoder and computer all matter. A software’s minimum requirements are not a promise of smooth recording.
Which 4K screen recorder should you choose?

OBS Studio: flexible capture
OBS Project lists support for Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 Big Sur or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland. The requirements article, dated 2021-08-25, cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee recording or streaming. It also says CPU needs vary considerably with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity. Camtasia: capture and tutorial editing together
TechSmith says Camtasia Recorder can record up to UHD on capable systems, and recommends an editor canvas no larger than 3,840 × 2,160. Lower-powered machines may have choppy playback or slow editing; TechSmith recommends a UHD display and local source storage, noting that an SSD can help. These are workflow recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer will edit smoothly. Details: TechSmith’s Camtasia 4K guidance.
NVIDIA ShadowPlay: gameplay first
NVIDIA describes ShadowPlay’s Instant Replay as saving the last 30 seconds, and says manual recording can reach 8K HDR at 30 FPS or 4K HDR at 120 FPS with minimal performance impact. Those are NVIDIA’s product claims for its gaming capture feature, not independent comparative test results. NVIDIA says RTX 40-series GPU owners can record AV1; its support page, updated 2025-08-06, lists supported output resolutions including 2160p/4K. Can I record my screen in 4K?
Usually, if the software supports the target resolution and the display or capture source, GPU, encoder and storage can sustain the workload. First check the resolution of the content you want to capture. Capturing a game displayed at 1080p and exporting an enlarged 4K file does not add native detail. For an external HDMI source such as a console, you also need a compatible capture device; a capture card is not necessary simply to record your computer’s own desktop.

Can OBS record in 4K?
OBS is a flexible choice for 4K capture, but its system requirements do not certify that a given PC will record 4K smoothly. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity and which GPU OBS uses all affect the result. On a multi-GPU Windows laptop, OBS and the game can end up on different GPUs. OBS documents that if a game uses the discrete GPU while OBS uses integrated graphics, Game Capture may fail; performance problems can also occur. Use OBS’s GPU Selection Guide to select the appropriate GPU for OBS on supported Windows configurations.
What do I need to record 4K at 60 fps?
There is no universal hardware guarantee: the required setup varies with the source, encoder and recording scene. For Camtasia specifically, TechSmith’s guidance updated 2024-10-11 says Camtasia 2024 and later can record 4K/60 when all these conditions are met:
- Set the recorder’s maximum frame rate to 60 FPS.
- Select H.264 as the encoder.
- Make sure the screen content refreshes at 60 FPS or higher.
- Use a monitor set to 4K at 60 Hz or higher.
- Have a discrete GPU power the monitor being recorded, with current graphics drivers. TechSmith recommends NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or higher.
These are Camtasia-specific vendor requirements and recommendations, not a universal specification for OBS or ShadowPlay. Read TechSmith’s 4K/60 recording and editing guidance.

Recording external HDMI video and HDR
If your source is a console or another HDMI device, route it through a capture device supported by your recording software. For HDR from an external capture device, OBS says the device needs a 10-bit format such as P010. Its compatibility guidance covers Windows and was published 2022-08-02; it lists Elgato 4K X, Elgato 4K Pro and other devices as tested and known to work. Keep device firmware and drivers current. Common 4K recording problems and fixes
Game Capture shows a blank screen
On a multi-GPU Windows laptop, check that OBS is using the GPU that runs the game. OBS says Game Capture may fail when OBS runs on integrated graphics while the game uses the discrete GPU. Follow the OBS GPU selection guide and retry the capture.

The recording stutters or the editor struggles
Meeting an application’s minimum requirements does not ensure reliable 4K recording. Reduce unnecessary scene complexity, check the selected encoder and frame rate, and use OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point. For Camtasia editing, TechSmith warns that lower-powered systems can produce choppy playback and slow editing; local source storage and an SSD may help, but neither guarantees smooth results.

HDR from a capture card looks wrong or is unavailable
Check whether the external device supports a 10-bit format such as P010, update its firmware and drivers, and confirm that you are using the Windows HDR capture workflow covered by OBS’s compatibility guide. A device’s appearance on the tested list is not proof that every firmware version or workflow will behave identically.
