Three standout PS3 adventures, depending on your mood
The Last of Us: a survival story with emotional weight
Joel and Ellie travel across a transformed United States after a pandemic in this character-led journey. Sony’s description puts survival, loyalty, love, and redemption at its center, making it a strong choice if you want a serious story paired with tense action. Sony announced the game as a PS3 exclusive in 2011. Read Sony’s announcement of The Last of Us.

Sony Computer Entertainment reported that the game passed 3.4 million global sales by July 3, 2013, less than three weeks after its June 14 global launch. That figure combined Blu-ray Disc sell-in and download sales; it was not a physical-copy-only total. Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida called the figures “a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us,” a promotional statement rather than an independent assessment. See Sony’s 2013 sales announcement.

Nathan Drake’s expedition follows the trail of Marco Polo’s lost fleet toward the Himalayan valley of Shambhala. Sony’s launch description emphasizes a story-driven single-player campaign as well as competitive and cooperative multiplayer, so this is the pick for a globe-trotting adventure with big set pieces and more than one way to play. See PlayStation’s launch description.
#1 Best Overall
- There are 8 summer camp games that are engaging and fun for a single player and for multiplayer head to head and hot seat play.
- Friends watching the game can use extra controllers to grief, dropping trees and items to create obstacles.
- Play one game at a time or compete for the Cabela's Cup which places you in a seven day tournament where the person with the highest score wins.
- Eight Exciting Games, Including: Thrill Hill Biking, Wild River Kayaking, Full Throttle Wave Riding, Skeet Shooting, Castaway Fishing, Archery Arcade, Hogwhacked, Bear Hunter Ninja and loads of camp-style competitions!
- Interactive Spectator Griefing - Ever want to mess with your friend or brother while they're playing? Now's your chance! Make trees or rocks fall so the player needs to react quickly. Will it be quickly enough?
Journey: quiet exploration and unexpected company
Journey trades the other two games’ combat- and set-piece-led approach for shifting sands and open-ended exploration. PlayStation’s preview describes a choice to travel alone or encounter another player by chance. Choose it when atmosphere and discovery matter more to you than a conventional action adventure. Read PlayStation’s preview of Journey.
More PS3 adventure games to add to your list
There is no single objective winner: what counts as “best” depends on whether you prefer a focused story, roaming, puzzle-solving, or action. These games also appear among the leading entries in Whatoplay’s PS3 adventure ranking, which is one publisher’s category list rather than a definitive consensus. - UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune — Start here if you want the beginning of Nathan Drake’s PS3 adventure. A clue in Sir Francis Drake’s coffin sends him to a forgotten Pacific island in pursuit of El Dorado. See PlayStation’s description of Drake’s Fortune.
- UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception — Another option if you want to continue with Drake after Among Thieves. The game appears on Whatoplay’s adventure list.
- Red Dead Redemption — Consider it if you want an adventure framed around broader roaming rather than a tightly guided treasure hunt. It appears on Whatoplay’s list.
- Batman: Arkham City — A superhero action-adventure option on the same ranking.
- Grand Theft Auto V — A choice for a large-scale, open-world experience; it is also listed by Whatoplay.
- God of War III — An action-heavy pick included in the ranking.
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots — A story- and action-focused option on the list.
- OKAMI HD — Another distinct adventure listed by Whatoplay, worth considering if you want something outside the realistic, cinematic style of the lead picks.

If you still play or collect for PS3, look for the exact PS3 edition rather than assuming a later re-release is interchangeable. Sony’s historical materials document PS3 editions of the first two UNCHARTED games, but an old PlayStation Store post does not confirm that a digital edition remains available now.
