AMD Radeon RX 590

Best AMD Radeon RX 590 Graphics Cards (2026 Used-Buying Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Sapphire Nitro+ RX 590 8GB is the best overall RX 590 when its condition and price are right. Choose the PowerColor Red Devil for its substantial cooler, or the XFX RX 590 Fatboy when it is cheaper and you want Performance and Quiet BIOS modes. The performance gap is small: a historical comparison of these three cards found them within roughly 1% in tested gaming, so condition, power requirements, noise, case fit and return protection matter more than factory clocks.

The RX 590 launched on November 15, 2018, at a $279 SEP USD. In 2026 it is a used or leftover-stock purchase, not a normal current-generation retail recommendation. Judge each listing against newer used GPUs, not the old launch price.

Quick comparison

Model Best for Clock information Cooler and size Power and outputs Key caution
Sapphire Nitro+ RX 590 8GB Best overall Faster memory configuration in the historical comparison; exact listing clock varies Substantial custom cooler; verify dimensions for the exact card Connector and output configuration varies by revision Do not pay a large premium for a small real-world lead
PowerColor Red Devil RX 590 8GB Cooler-focused build Not stated consistently across revisions Large heatsink with additional fin area; may occupy several slots 8-pin plus 6-pin power connectors Needs suitable PSU and case clearance
XFX RX 590 Fatboy 8GB Value and BIOS flexibility 1545 MHz and 1580 MHz variants exist 2.5-slot cooler 8-pin plus 6-pin; three DisplayPort, HDMI and dual-link DVI on the documented 1545 MHz model Check exact model, temperature history and fan condition

Historical performance, temperature and value results come from this three-card comparison; they are not 2026 benchmarks.

Best overall: Sapphire Nitro+ RX 590 8GB

The Nitro+ led the cited roundup because of its faster memory configuration and recorded the highest gaming performance of the three tested cards. The practical difference was small, however: normal gameplay felt effectively the same as on the Red Devil and Fatboy.

Buy it when the card is clean, fully tested and only modestly more expensive than alternatives. Sapphire’s RX 590 Nitro+ is documented in the company’s compatibility material at Sapphire’s product list.

When the premium is justified

  • The seller provides a return period or credible warranty.
  • Fans are quiet, temperatures are reasonable and all outputs work.
  • The price remains below a meaningfully faster, newer used GPU.

When to pass

A dusty card, unknown mining history, missing screws, noisy bearings or a collector-style premium erases the Nitro+ advantage. Confirm whether a listing is the standard Nitro+ or a Special Edition and check its physical dimensions.

Best cooler-oriented alternative: PowerColor Red Devil

The Red Devil uses a heavy custom heatsink designed to increase heat-dissipation area. It is a sensible choice for a mid-tower with good airflow when you value cooler potential and robust construction more than compactness. PowerColor’s product information is available on its Red Devil page and this additional product page.

The documented design requires both an 8-pin and a 6-pin PCIe connector. Verify that your PSU has native cables and that the card will not block an important expansion slot. The cooler does not make it materially faster than the other tested RX 590s.

Best value: XFX RX 590 Fatboy

The Fatboy is the value pick when it is meaningfully cheaper than a Nitro+ or Red Devil in comparable condition. Its Performance and Quiet BIOS options let you trade acoustics for performance without flashing firmware. XFX documents the 8GB, 256-bit model, 2.5-slot cooler, outputs and power requirements at the Fatboy product page.

XFX specifies one 8-pin and one 6-pin connector and recommends a 500-watt power supply for the documented model. The historical test measured about 80°C, but fan curves, target temperatures, ambient conditions, case airflow, dust and BIOS mode differed; that figure is not a universal expectation for used cards.

What performance to expect

Good fits

  • 1080p gaming at reduced or medium settings in demanding modern titles.
  • Older AAA games at high settings.
  • Esports games when the processor is adequate.
  • A budget replacement for an RX 570, RX 580 or similarly old card.

AMD’s launch announcement claimed up to 60 FPS or higher in popular AAA games and up to 100 FPS in some esports titles, but those were 2018-era claims, not guarantees for 2026 games. The historical roundup found acceptable 1440p results for its test period; today, 1440p is game- and settings-dependent rather than the card’s primary target.

Reasons to skip it

  • You need ray tracing, AV1 streaming or modern media features.
  • You want a quiet, efficient system.
  • The card costs close to a newer used GPU.
  • Your case or PSU cannot support a large, dual-connector board.

How to choose a used RX 590

  1. Compare the complete deal. Weigh price, return window, warranty, shipping and condition against newer used Radeon families listed in AMD’s graphics specifications directory. The original $279 launch SEP is historical, not a 2026 target.
  2. Ask about prior use. Mining does not automatically condemn a card, but request disclosure and look for worn fans, discolored boards, corrosion, missing screws or evidence of cooler removal.
  3. Demand operating proof. Request a game or benchmark video or screenshot showing stable clocks, temperatures, hotspot data when available and no artifacting. Confirm every display output you need.
  4. Inspect fans and cooler. Listen for grinding, rattling or fans that fail to start. Dust-clogged fins and dried thermal paste can make a healthy GPU appear defective.
  5. Verify BIOS and connectors. Ask whether the BIOS was modified. Match the exact model’s connector requirement; never substitute unsafe SATA-to-PCIe or Molex-to-PCIe adapters.
  6. Measure the case. Check GPU length, 2.5- or 3-slot thickness, adjacent-slot clearance, radiator or drive-cage interference, cable bend room and whether the second PCIe slot will be blocked.
  7. Prefer recoverable purchases. A seller return period or transferable warranty is especially valuable for an eight-year-old card. Historical launch warranties—two years for Sapphire and PowerColor and three for XFX—should not be assumed to transfer to a used card or current region.

Power, case and monitor checks

RX 590 boards draw substantial power for their performance class. The Fatboy’s 500W recommendation applies to XFX’s documented model; other boards can differ. Use a reputable PSU with native PCIe leads, and account for the rest of the system rather than treating 500W as a universal rule.

Do not assume every RX 590 has DVI. AMD lists DisplayPort and HDMI capabilities for the GPU, while the documented Fatboy adds dual-link DVI. Verify the photographs and exact specification if you use an older monitor.

Who should still buy one?

Buy an RX 590 only when you need inexpensive 1080p performance, the listing is substantially cheaper than newer alternatives, your PSU and case are compatible, and the seller offers meaningful test evidence or a return path. Among otherwise comparable listings, rank the Nitro+ first, Red Devil second and Fatboy third; a verified bargain in better condition can overturn that order.

Final ranking

  1. Sapphire Nitro+ RX 590 8GB: best overall when condition and price are favorable.
  2. PowerColor Red Devil RX 590 8GB: best cooler-oriented alternative for a suitably spacious, well-powered case.
  3. XFX RX 590 Fatboy 8GB: best value when cheaper, with useful dual-BIOS flexibility.
  4. Any other RX 590: consider only when meaningfully cheaper, better preserved or a better fit for your case and PSU.
