This list treats “arcade” as a style as well as a place of origin, and selects games for their distinct feel, course or world design, modes, multiplayer, historical importance, and practical relevance—not as a universal ranking.
What counts as an arcade racing game?
Some arcade racers began in coin-op cabinets; others are console games that favor immediate, forgiving, or exaggerated racing over strict simulation. The picks below include both. They span kart combat, rally drifting, checkpoint routes, street racing, takedowns, and open-world driving, so “best” depends on the kind of race you want.

These are editorial recommendations, not a definitive ranked list. Review scores and genre indexes can help identify games, but neither establishes a single all-time champion. Metacritic’s arcade-racing category is a filtered index; the accessed page listed 79 results and excluded games with fewer than seven critic reviews. Metacritic’s arcade-racing index

Daytona USA — the cabinet-era essential
For the feeling of a classic arcade race, Daytona USA is a natural starting point. It first released in 1994, and GameSpot lists arcade, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and PC platforms. GameSpot’s page shows an 8.6 review score and a Metacritic score of 86 in its game information; those figures belong to the page’s review context, not every edition or an all-time ranking. Handling, course design, signature mechanics, modes, multiplayer, and historical influence are useful ways to compare these games—but access matters too. The older titles’ historical platform listings are not proof that a compatible, legal edition is currently available. Verify the specific version and platform before buying or planning to play.
