Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a stereo YouTube Live stream sent over RTMP or RTMPS, set audio to AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube also lists MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, so AAC is a practical choice—not a documented claim of superior sound for lofi. Use live-stream settings rather than the separate settings for uploaded videos.
Recommended settings for a stereo lofi livestream
| Setting | RTMP/RTMPS live recommendation |
|---|---|
| Audio codec | AAC; YouTube also lists MP3 |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz for stereo |
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps for stereo |
These are YouTube’s listed live encoder settings for stereo audio. The audio bitrate is separate from the video bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for live encoder connections. YouTube live encoder settings
Why 44.1 kHz for live, not 48 kHz?
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Its upload encoding recommendations are different: they list 48 kHz and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, with 384 kbps for stereo uploads. Those upload specifications apply when submitting a video file; they do not replace the live-ingestion settings.
| Workflow | Audio codecs listed | Stereo sample rate | Stereo audio bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS live ingestion | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps |
| HLS live ingestion | AAC, AC3, or EAC3 | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps |
| Video upload | AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio | 48 kHz | 384 kbps |
The figures above are the settings listed by YouTube for each workflow, not a direct comparison of perceived audio quality. YouTube upload encoding settings YouTube HLS setup

Does AAC sound better than MP3 for lofi?
YouTube’s live documentation lists AAC and MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, but does not establish that AAC sounds better than MP3 for lofi music. Nor does it show that 48 kHz sounds better than 44.1 kHz for stereo live ingestion. Choose a supported setting and keep your encoder’s audio output consistent with it; treat the recommendation as a compatibility setting, not a lofi-specific listening test.
Configure and check the stream
- Confirm the ingestion protocol. Check whether your encoder sends RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, then use YouTube’s codec options for that protocol. Do not apply upload-file settings to a live feed.
- Set stereo audio output. For RTMP/RTMPS, choose AAC, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. MP3 is also listed as a supported RTMP/RTMPS codec. If using HLS, check YouTube’s HLS instructions for the supported codec options.
- Test before the long stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. Confirm that the audio reaches the live preview and that stream health shows no relevant warnings.
- Monitor while live. Watch stream health and YouTube’s messages, and check audio and video continuously. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube streaming tips
A matching codec and sample rate do not guarantee a stream will stay online or that the audio mix will sound good; they are only part of the encoder setup.

Keep a 24/7 stream running
If you operate your own encoder, configure it with the live settings above, test the complete setup, and monitor it during the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking stream health; the codec choice itself does not ensure continuous operation.
