For a prerecorded stereo video, export the audio at 48 kHz and use AAC-LC for a conventional, broadly compatible upload. YouTube recommends 48 kHz for uploaded media and lists AAC-LC among its upload audio codecs. Live ingestion has separate guidance: for RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo; for HLS, it specifies the same stereo rate. Keep the file-export recommendation distinct from the settings used to send a live feed.
Which codec and sample rate should you use?
For a typical prerecorded stereo program that you upload and then play as a YouTube Live event, use AAC-LC at 48 kHz as a practical export choice. YouTube’s upload recommendations list AAC-LC, Opus, and Eclipsa Audio, and recommend 48 kHz audio in an MP4 container. These are upload-media recommendations, not a bespoke rule for prerecorded files played out as Live events. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Do not treat 48 kHz as the universal sample-rate setting for every part of a live workflow. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is protocol-specific: RTMP/RTMPS and HLS use their own listed audio formats and live settings. If an encoder is sending a live feed rather than simply preparing the uploaded file, configure it for the selected ingestion protocol.
Upload encoding and live ingestion are different stages
| Context | Listed audio codec(s) | Sample-rate guidance | Other setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended uploaded media | AAC-LC, Opus, Eclipsa Audio | 48 kHz | MP4 container recommended. YouTube upload encoding settings. |
| RTMP/RTMPS live ingestion | AAC or MP3 | 44.1 kHz stereo; 48 kHz 5.1 | 5.1 is supported only with AAC; YouTube lists 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1. YouTube live encoder settings. |
| HLS live ingestion | AAC, AC3, EAC3 | 44.1 kHz stereo; 48 kHz 5.1 | YouTube lists 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1. YouTube HLS ingestion guidance. |
| Upload troubleshooting reference | AAC-LC | 44.1 or 48 kHz | 128–256 kbps. YouTube upload troubleshooting. |
The settings above describe different contexts; they should not be combined into one universal preset. In particular, the upload page’s 48 kHz recommendation and the live encoder’s 44.1 kHz stereo setting apply to different stages. The official guidance reviewed does not state a separate sample-rate rule specifically for a prerecorded file played as a YouTube Live event.

Choose the setting that matches your channel layout
Stereo
Keep a stereo source stereo. For the uploaded file, YouTube recommends 48 kHz. For a separate RTMP/RTMPS or HLS live feed, YouTube’s live guidance gives 44.1 kHz for stereo and lists 128 kbps audio. AAC-LC is a sensible file-export choice; for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, the listed live choices are AAC or MP3, while HLS lists AAC, AC3, or EAC3.
5.1 surround
Use 5.1 only when the program actually has a 5.1 mix and the encoder and delivery path support it. YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 in its RTMP/RTMPS and HLS live guidance. RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC. Do not upmix stereo audio just to use the 5.1 settings; that does not create discrete surround content.

Prepare and verify the prerecorded audio
- Identify the stage. Decide whether you are exporting an upload file or configuring an encoder that sends a live feed. Use the upload recommendations for the media file and the protocol-specific live settings for ingestion.
- Match the source layout. Retain stereo for a stereo mix, or use 5.1 only for a genuine 5.1 program and compatible path.
- Export the uploaded file. For conventional stereo, choose AAC-LC at 48 kHz and use an MP4 container, consistent with YouTube’s upload recommendations.
- Configure the live encoder if you are sending one. Select RTMP/RTMPS or HLS deliberately, then follow the corresponding codec, sample-rate, and channel-layout guidance. These are different ingestion protocols, not interchangeable menus.
- Run a full-path test before the event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video similar to the planned stream, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. Use the actual prerecorded file and intended encoder/protocol; listen for incorrect channel mapping, clipping, sync problems, or silence.
If your production uses HLS, YouTube also specifies TS segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlist limits, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Its HLS guidance notes higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends segments. These transport details matter for HLS configuration but do not change the uploaded file’s 48 kHz recommendation. See YouTube’s live encoder and HLS guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The file is 48 kHz but the live encoder expects another setting: Check whether you are looking at upload-file settings or live-ingestion settings. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, YouTube’s live guidance specifies 44.1 kHz; the upload recommendation is 48 kHz.
- Surround audio is missing or wrong: Verify the actual mix and channel mapping. RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC; do not label or encode a stereo mix as 5.1.
- The stream has silence, clipping, or sync drift: Test the complete playback and ingest path with the actual file, then inspect the preview and monitor stream health. A nominal codec and sample-rate choice alone cannot guarantee clean playback.
- You are following an upload troubleshooting value as though it were a live requirement: YouTube’s upload troubleshooting reference lists AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and 44.1 or 48 kHz; its live encoder guidance separately lists 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1. Apply the figure only to its stated context.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the prerecorded video needs to keep looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo lets you upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your upload rather than broadcasting a camera. Your uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
