Unbreaking and Mending help keep a useful pair in service. There is no single best combination for every situation.
What enchantments should I put on my boots in Minecraft?
For general survival and fall-risk exploration, a practical core is Feather Falling IV, Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. This is a recommendation based on the enchantments’ documented effects, not a set Minecraft identifies as universally best.

#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
For falls and general damage
Feather Falling is the direct choice when falls are the main risk; its maximum level is IV. Protection applies more broadly, reducing most types of damage, but it does not replace Feather Falling’s specific fall-damage effect.
For underwater travel
Choose Depth Strider III when your goal is faster movement underwater, such as during ocean or river travel.
Rank #2
- Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
For crossing water on foot
Choose Frost Walker II if a temporary frozen path across water is useful. It changes how you traverse the surface rather than increasing underwater movement speed.
For soul terrain
Choose Soul Speed III for faster walking on soul sand and soul soil, including when navigating those surfaces in the Nether.
Rank #3
For longer-lasting boots
Unbreaking III increases durability, while Mending I repairs the item when you gain XP orbs. They address different parts of keeping the boots usable: durability loss and XP-based repair.
Depth Strider or Frost Walker?
Pick according to where you need to move. Depth Strider is for underwater speed; Frost Walker is for making a temporary path over water. They solve different problems, so the better choice depends on whether you expect to swim or walk across the surface.

Frost Walker turns water source blocks beneath the player into frosted ice. The ice melts naturally, so it is temporary; Minecraft’s official Frosted Ice article recommends continuing to move to keep creating it.

The same article says Frost Walker prevents damage from magma blocks and campfires. It does not make lava safe: the article explains that frosted ice melts instantly over lava. Do not treat the enchantment as lava protection.
Getting Frost Walker onto boots
Minecraft’s Frosted Ice article describes obtaining Frost Walker on an enchanted book and combining the book with boots using an anvil. Specific acquisition rules can vary by edition and version, so consult guidance for the one you play.
Is Swift Sneak a boot enchantment?
In the current Bedrock equipment reference, Swift Sneak is assigned to leggings and increases sneaking speed. An older Minecraft snapshot article described an early implementation as a boots enchantment, which accounts for conflicting older advice; that snapshot is historical, not current guidance. The current equipment assignment is in Microsoft’s Bedrock Creator reference; the older account is in Minecraft.net’s A Very Scary Snapshot.
Edition and version details to check
The references here establish broad enchantment effects and caps, plus Bedrock equipment categories and Frost Walker behavior. They do not establish a complete, current Java-and-Bedrock matrix for acquisition methods or which enchantments can coexist in every version. If you need those details for a particular survival world, check a reference matching its edition and version rather than assuming the rules are identical.
