For a first clear, prioritize a build designed for survival and progression; for a high-kill or leaderboard run, use a version-matched ranked setup. Treat tier lists and player recommendations as starting points, not universal answers.
What makes a Megabonk build work?
A build combines a character, weapons, Tomes, and items. The pieces should complement the character’s passive and starting weapon while serving a clear purpose: damage, coverage, survival, or scaling. A powerful weapon by itself is not a complete build, and a setup made for a leaderboard score may be a poor fit for a first clear.
Megabonk.org’s independent build hub organizes recommendations by first clears, high kills, challenges, characters, playstyles, and ranked runs. It says its manually reviewed recommendations and leaderboard sample can differ in game version, so check the displayed version and sync time before copying a ranked setup: Megabonk build hub.
Choose a route based on your goal
First clear or a difficult stage
Use a guide explicitly written for a first clear or the stage giving you trouble. A clear-focused build should give you a workable mix of damage and staying power rather than assume you can survive a high-risk strategy. For example, a player asking about the level 3 desert received two very different community suggestions: one centered on Tony McZoom and Dagger, Aura, Katana, and Dice or Revolver; another used Monke with Banana, Bone, Lightning Staff, and Aegis. These are individual anecdotes, not tested rankings. They illustrate why the problem you need to solve matters more than copying a bare weapon list. Read the community discussion.

A specific character
Start with the character’s passive and starting weapon, then select weapons and upgrades that reinforce their strengths or cover a weakness. Megabonk.org lists 21 character builds and links character guides; those are guide-site counts, not official game statistics. Browse character builds.
A preferred playstyle
Choose an approach and accept its tradeoffs instead of treating playstyles as a universal ranking:

- HERO Gaming Sensor: Next generation HERO mouse sensor delivers precision tracking up to 25600 DPI with zero smoothing, filtering or acceleration
- 11 programmable buttons and dual mode hyper-fast scroll wheel: The Logitech wired gaming mouse gives you fully customizable control over your gameplay

- Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback
- Melee or execute: build around close-range damage and the ability to finish threats, while accounting for the danger of staying near enemies.
- Ranged or critical hits: emphasize damage at range or crit potential; consider what the setup gives up in defense or area coverage.
- Defense or area control: favor staying power and tools that affect groups, potentially at the cost of faster single-target damage.
- Poison or sustain: lean on damage over time or recovery, with the tradeoff that results may depend on surviving long enough for the approach to pay off.
- Control, grouping, or movement and scaling: shape the run around positioning, enemy management, or growth over time rather than assuming immediate damage is the only priority.
These are categories used by the build hub, not a guarantee that any one is best for every character or stage. See the hub’s playstyle filters.
High kills, challenges, or leaderboard runs
Use a guide labeled for that specific objective. High-kill and ranked strategies can value scaling or risk differently from a reliable clear, and challenge runs may impose their own constraints. For leaderboard builds, verify the recorded game version and sync time, then check whether the game has changed since that run. Megabonk.org explicitly cautions that its ranked sample may lag the version used for manual recommendations. Check ranked-build evidence.

How to compare two candidate builds
Before committing, compare what each setup is meant to do and what evidence supports it. A tier list ranks individual options; it does not show how a character, weapons, Tomes, and items work together.
- Objective: Is it built for a first clear, a named character, high kills, a challenge, or a leaderboard result?
- Character fit: Do the weapon choices reinforce the passive and starting weapon, or compensate for a weakness?
- Coverage and survival: Does the setup handle groups and dangerous moments, or concentrate on damage at the expense of staying power?
- Tome priorities: What does the build prioritize, and what useful upgrade is the opportunity cost?
- Items and unlocks: Are the recommended items available to you, and does the guide explain any unlock requirements?
- Execution and stage: Does the plan demand precise play, and is it intended for the map or stage you are attempting?
- Evidence and version: Is this a manually reviewed recommendation, a community anecdote, or a recorded run? Is its game version stated, and does it match the version you play?
Use tier lists carefully
An unofficial fan wiki labels its character, weapon, and Tome rankings v1.0.69 and says they were reviewed in July 2026. Its S-tier character list includes CL4NK, Dicehead, Megachad, and Robinette; its S-tier weapon list includes Flamewalker, Aegis, Aura, Dexecutioner, Blood Magic, Katana, and Dice. Those are that wiki’s editorial rankings—not official rankings, proof of a complete build, or evidence that each option is optimal for every goal. View the fan wiki’s tier lists.

Why version labels matter
Megabonk.org, an independent player wiki, reports v1.0.69 as its latest tracked patch, with patch data synced July 27, 2026; its build hub says recommendations were reviewed for v1.0.69 on July 29, 2026. These are the site’s stated baselines, not independently verified official patch status, and they can become outdated. Check the wiki’s game page.
Balance changes can affect the value of a build component. PC Gamer reported historical developer Vedinad comments about a patch that added a per-minute damage cap to Joe’s Dagger and changed the XP Tome bonus from 9% to 7%. Those figures describe the patch discussed in that report, not necessarily the current game. The developer said the change meant the dagger was “unchanged early- and mid-game, but very late-game it’s not gonna be the only viable option anymore.” Read PC Gamer’s historical patch coverage.

A practical way to pick your next build
- Name the objective. Decide whether you want a reliable clear, a particular character, a challenge completion, or a ranked result.
- Choose a matching guide. Prefer one labeled for that goal, character, or stage over a general tier list.
- Check the full setup. Look at character, weapons, Tomes, and items together; note unlock requirements and how the plan addresses survival.
- Check version and evidence. For ranked runs, confirm the displayed game version and sync time. For community posts, treat the loadout as a suggestion rather than a verified result.
- Adjust to the obstacle. If you are failing at survival, do not copy a high-risk damage setup just because it ranks well. If you are surviving but taking too long, reassess damage and scaling priorities.
A March 17, 2026 article presents ten builds and says they cleared the hardest content, but its accessible page does not establish a reproducible testing method or show that the builds match the later v1.0.69 baseline. It may offer historical ideas, but it is not enough to establish today’s universal meta. Read the ten-build article.
