The best camo for Africa in MGSV depends on the ground around Snake, not just the region name. A community terrain guide recommends Khaki Urban for sand or ordinary soil, Woodland for greenery, Golden Tiger for red soil, Urban for metal or concrete, Stone for rocky ground, and Wetwork for rivers or swamps. Treat these as practical matches—not an official or universal ranking—and use cover, a low stance, and careful movement to stay hidden.
Which camo should you use in each part of Africa?
The community guide “Box Camos” associates these patterns with Africa environments. Choose based on the surface along your immediate route: a broad label like “Africa” cannot tell you whether the approach is mostly greenery, rock, or concrete.

| Terrain or surface | Practical camo choice | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Sand or ordinary soil | Khaki Urban | Use when pale sand or soil dominates the route. |
| Greenery or forest | Woodland | Choose for vegetation rather than assuming every African operation is dryland. |
| Red soil | Golden Tiger | A terrain-specific option for red ground, not a general-purpose winner. |
| Metal or concrete | Urban | Consider it near buildings and constructed surfaces. |
| Rocky ground | Stone | Use when exposed rock is the main surface around the approach. |
| Rivers or swamps | Wetwork | Use for wet terrain rather than relying on a dry-ground pattern. |
| All-Purpose Dryland cardboard box association | Animals fatigues | The guide associates the box with these fatigues; it is not a measured fatigue ranking. |
The pattern associations come from a Nexus Mods community guide to box camos. It distinguishes Africa and Afghanistan box contents and describes camouflage as matching the corresponding surface. It does not establish Konami-approved camouflage values or a numeric ranking of fatigues.
Why there is no single best Africa camo
Africa’s missions can put Snake against different surfaces, so a pattern that fits one approach may stand out on another. The available mapping is useful for selecting a starting point, but it does not provide a complete numerical comparison across terrain, stance, time of day, and other conditions. There is no verified one-pattern choice that is best for every Africa location.

- Use objects as cover: Approach obstacles and move along them to remain concealed rather than crossing open space unnecessarily.
- Break contact after detection: Enemies can alert allies by shouting, radio, or other means. If you slip away, guards search around the place they last saw you for a time. Hide or reposition, then avoid immediately repeating the same exposed route.
A quick way to choose before an operation
- Look at the surface that dominates the route you expect to take: vegetation, red soil, pale sand or soil, constructed surfaces, rock, or wet ground.
- Use the corresponding pattern in the terrain table as a practical starting choice.
- Plan to use cover and a lower stance where exposure is likely; camouflage does not replace those tactics.
- If guards spot you, break contact and change position before attempting another approach.
