Baldur’s Gate 3 has 12 classes, and there is no official class tier list that settles which one is best. This ranking is an editorial all-around judgment: it weighs combat contribution, usefulness outside combat, performance through the level curve, ease for a first-time player, and how much a strong build depends on specialist planning or gear. The ordering covers the game’s Patch 8-era class and subclass options, not mods.
If you want the simplest recommendation: choose Bard for versatility, Paladin for a sturdy frontline role with strong dialogue utility, or Fighter for a direct, approachable combat style. The full ranking below explains why those classes land where they do—and when another class will suit you better.

How this Baldur’s Gate 3 class ranking works
The ranks are not official, objective balance tiers, and they are not based on comparative damage tests or win-rate data. They reflect how well each single class serves a broad range of players across a full campaign. A specialist can outperform a higher-ranked class in the right party or build; a class that is easier to pilot may be a better first choice than one with a more demanding high ceiling.

Larian’s Patch 8 announcement and official patch post identify those additions. This ranking considers the class choices in that Patch 8-era context, while treating each class as a single-class character rather than trying to rank every possible multiclass combination.

The best Baldur’s Gate 3 classes, ranked
-
Bard
Bard takes the top all-around spot because it can contribute in combat and remain useful when swords are sheathed. Its spellcasting, support, and skill-focused identity make it a strong fit for players who want one character to handle varied situations rather than specialize in only one job. That breadth also suits a protagonist who frequently speaks for the party.
The tradeoff is that a Bard asks you to make more choices than a straightforward weapon-focused class: spell selection and tactical decisions shape how it contributes. Its flexibility is the reason it ranks first, but players who want a simple combat loop may prefer Fighter.
-
Paladin
Paladin combines a durable frontline role with magic and strong face-character potential. It is an especially appealing pick if you want to lead conversations and still hold your own in a fight. Its subclass options—including the Oath of the Crown added in Patch 8—give players different ways to shape that role.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Paladin’s main drawback is commitment: its oath is part of the class’s identity, so it is less free-form than some alternatives. It also asks the player to manage a mix of martial and magical tools rather than relying on one uncomplicated routine.
-
Fighter
Fighter is one of the easiest classes to recommend to a first-time player who wants dependable weapon combat without a spell list to manage. Its straightforward core makes it accessible, while subclass choices let players add more tactical or magical flavor. Patch 8’s Arcane Archer provides another direction for the class.
Its narrower out-of-combat identity is the tradeoff: compared with classes built around skills, dialogue, or broad spell utility, Fighter is less likely to solve every kind of problem on its own. It remains an excellent choice if your priority is a clear combat role.
-
Cleric
Cleric brings a useful combination of support, defense, and spellcasting, making it a flexible party member rather than a one-purpose healer. Its subclass choice can meaningfully change how it approaches combat, and Patch 8 added the Death Domain as another option.

- Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.
Cleric’s breadth comes with more spell and resource decisions than a beginner may want to handle immediately. Players who enjoy responding to changing encounters will get more out of that versatility than those seeking a minimal-management class.
-
Wizard
Wizard earns a high place for players who want a wide magical toolkit and the ability to approach problems with different spells. It has a strong identity as a dedicated spellcaster, and Patch 8 added Bladesinging for a different subclass direction.
That potential depends on understanding spell choices and when to use them. A Wizard can feel less forgiving to someone who would rather act than plan; it is best for players who enjoy tactical options and are willing to learn how their tools fit different situations.
-
Sorcerer
Sorcerer offers a compelling spellcasting path for players who want magic to define their character. Its subclass choices give the class distinct flavors, including Shadow Magic, introduced in Patch 8. For players who like specializing in a particular magical identity, it can be a satisfying alternative to Wizard.

New players who are unsure what kind of magic they want may find Bard or Wizard easier to shape around a changing party.
-
Monk
Monk is a strong pick for a player who wants a mobile, distinctive martial style rather than conventional weapon-and-armor combat. Patch 8’s Way of the Drunken Master adds another subclass choice, and the class can reward players who enjoy positioning and active turns.
That active playstyle makes Monk less plug-and-play than Fighter. Its relative appeal also depends on how much you want to learn its particular mechanics rather than use a familiar frontline approach.

-
Druid
Druid offers a broad nature-themed toolset and a playstyle that can shift between spellcasting and other class features. Circle of Stars, added in Patch 8, gives the class an additional subclass path. It suits players who like adapting their role instead of committing to a single combat pattern.

See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. The range of options can make Druid harder to pick up than a simpler martial class. If you want your character’s role to be immediately obvious and consistent, another class may be easier to pilot.
-
Warlock
Warlock has a distinctive magical identity and a relatively focused class concept, with Hexblade added in Patch 8 as a new subclass option. It can appeal to players who want a caster that feels different from the Wizard or Sorcerer’s approach.
Its strengths and feel are more tied to its specific class mechanics and choices, so it is not as universally flexible as the top-ranked options. Choose it because its style appeals to you, not because this ranking suggests it is the strongest in every situation.
-
Ranger
Ranger blends martial combat with nature-themed utility and offers a recognizable scout or hunter role. Patch 8 added Swarmkeeper, expanding its subclass options. It is a sensible choice if you want a character who feels at home exploring and fighting without leaning entirely into spellcasting.

See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Ranger ranks lower here because its broad appeal is less pronounced than that of classes with especially strong all-purpose skill, support, or combat identities. It can still be a good fit for a party and protagonist built around its particular strengths.
-
Barbarian
Barbarian is a clear, accessible choice for players who want to get into the thick of combat and emphasize toughness and direct physical force. Path of the Giant, added in Patch 8, gives it another subclass direction. Its focused role can make it easier to understand than a class with a large menu of spells and support decisions.
Rank #4
That focus is also its limitation in an all-around ranking: Barbarian is more specialized outside combat than classes with broader skill or magical toolkits. Pick it if the frontline bruiser fantasy is the point, rather than expecting it to cover every party need.
-
Rogue
Rogue is built around a precise, skillful style and can be attractive to players who want a character focused on stealth, expertise, and opportunistic combat. Patch 8’s Swashbuckler adds a new subclass route for a more daring approach.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Rogue’s narrower all-around party contribution places it last in this particular ranking, not outside the range of viable choices. It can be the right class for a player who values its specific identity and wants to build around it.
Which class should you play in Baldur’s Gate 3?
| If you want… | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A flexible protagonist for varied situations | Bard | Its blend of combat, support, and skills makes it broadly useful. |
| A durable party leader with martial and magical tools | Paladin | It combines a frontline role with strong dialogue potential. |
| Accessible, direct weapon combat | Fighter | Its core role is easy to understand without managing a spell list. |
| A broad support and spell toolkit | Cleric | It can contribute in several ways, with subclass choices shaping its role. |
| A dedicated, tactical spellcaster | Wizard | Choose it if you enjoy selecting and applying a varied magical toolkit. |
| A specific martial or magical fantasy | Any class whose identity appeals to you | Personal playstyle matters more than a small difference in an editorial ordering. |
Does your starting class choice lock you in?
No. Larian describes respec as a way to restart a build from Level 1 with different starting proficiencies, attributes, spells, and cantrips. The initial class choice is therefore not permanent, though changing a build means making a new set of character decisions. Larian’s Community Update #21 explains the respec framing.
How multiclassing changes the ranking
Multiclassing lets players choose a different class at each level, so combinations can create builds that do not fit neatly into a single-class ranking. Larian notes that the game had 12 classes and 46 subclasses when Community Update #21 was published in 2023; Patch 8 later added 12 subclasses, one per class. Those counts describe the scope of the options, not comparative strength.
Larian says: “Given the possible combinations, we recommend you have previous experience as a D&D player to fully leverage this feature.” If this is your first run, learning one class before experimenting with multiclass combinations is a reasonable way to keep character progression easier to follow.
