For the most gaming performance in a truly compact Windows desktop, the 2025 ASUS ROG NUC is the leading choice—but its RTX graphics are laptop GPUs, and its U.S. starting price was listed at $2,799. It is a premium pick, not a value recommendation. For lower-cost 1080p gaming, a Ryzen 9 8945HS mini PC such as the Minisforum UM890 Pro makes more sense; for the strongest integrated graphics, look at a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system such as the GMKtec EVO-X2.

The right choice depends on whether you want discrete-GPU performance, integrated graphics, or an upgrade path. Those are different categories, and “mini gaming PC” does not mean every small box can run new AAA games well.

Best overall: ASUS ROG NUC (2025)

The ROG NUC is the clearest choice if “compact gaming PC” means a small desktop with discrete graphics for demanding PC games. ASUS offers 2025 configurations pairing Core Ultra 7 or Core Ultra 9 processors with RTX 5060, RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, or RTX 5080 Laptop GPUs. The chassis is roughly 2.5 liters, and ASUS lists dimensions of about 282.4 × 187.7 × 56.5 mm, with the base adding height. It is small beside a conventional gaming tower, though the power adapter and ventilation clearance also take space.

That dedicated RTX GPU makes the ROG NUC a stronger fit than an APU mini PC for visually demanding games, ray tracing, and higher frame rates. Expect 1080p to be the comfortable target across more games. 1440p is viable depending on the specific GPU, settings, and game; 4K should be treated as a game-by-game proposition that often relies on upscaling rather than a universal native-resolution target.

Important: These are laptop-class GPUs, not desktop RTX cards with the same names. Laptop GPU performance depends on its power allocation and cooling, and a compact chassis can limit sustained output. Do not infer that an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU in the NUC performs like a desktop RTX 5080—or use a review of one ROG NUC configuration to predict another’s results.

ASUS lists up to 96GB of removable CSODIMM memory, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and 2.5Gb Ethernet. Its specifications list PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 NVMe storage support, but slot availability and included drives depend on configuration. Confirm the exact number of M.2 slots, memory modules, and installed SSDs for the SKU you plan to buy.

The main drawback is price. ASUS’s U.S. product page showed a starting price of $2,799 at the time represented by the research; that is a volatile price signal, not a current guaranteed quote. At that level, compare the complete setup with a gaming laptop and a small-form-factor desktop. A laptop includes its screen, keyboard, battery, and speakers; a compact desktop may offer a full desktop GPU and better upgrade options. The NUC makes most sense when small footprint is worth paying for and you already have the display and peripherals.

Buy it if: compactness is a priority and you want discrete RTX graphics in a Windows desktop. Skip it if: your games are mostly esports or older titles, or you want the best frame rate per dollar.

Best premium model: ROG NUC with RTX 5080 Laptop GPU

Within the 2025 ROG NUC line, the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU configuration is the performance pick. It is the one to consider for demanding games, more ambitious 1440p settings, and ray tracing, while remembering that power and cooling are constrained by the compact chassis. The top GPU does not turn this into a desktop-tower substitute at any price: compare independent reviews of the exact configuration and pay attention to long-session thermals and noise, not just short benchmark runs.

Best integrated graphics: GMKtec EVO-X2

The GMKtec EVO-X2 combines AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with Radeon 8060S integrated graphics. It is among the most compelling integrated-graphics platforms in this class, making it worth considering if you want one small PC for gaming and demanding productivity without a separate graphics chip.

Its strengths are relative to other integrated graphics, not proof that it matches a discrete RTX system. The GPU shares system memory, so memory capacity, speed, and configuration matter; game, driver, cooling, and power settings matter too. Expect the best results in esports, indie titles, older games, and selected mainstream games at 1080p with tuned settings or upscaling. Heavy ray tracing, new AAA games at high settings, and a general 4K-gaming promise are not sensible reasons to buy it.

Notebookcheck’s EVO-X2 review describes the platform as a standout for mini-PC integrated graphics while also finding that a discrete-GPU ROG NUC can remain faster in games. The EVO-X2 is most attractive when its combination of graphics, CPU capability, and high memory capacity fits broader work as well as gaming. If gaming alone is the priority and a discrete-GPU model is similarly priced, compare the two carefully.

Best value for 1080p: Minisforum UM890 Pro

The UM890 Pro’s Ryzen 9 8945HS and Radeon 780M make it a sensible lower-cost route into compact PC gaming, provided expectations match its integrated GPU. It suits esports, indie games, older AAA releases, and less demanding titles. For recent demanding games, plan on reducing resolution or settings and using upscaling where available; it is not the choice for high-end ray tracing or consistent 1440p ultra settings.

Compared with premium discrete-GPU mini PCs, it offers a more balanced general-purpose package for buyers who also need a compact work or media PC. The reviewed configuration has upgradeable memory and NVMe storage, but bundles and retail configurations differ. Compare the full price with memory, SSD, and Windows included rather than treating a barebones price as the cost of a ready-to-use PC.

Notebookcheck’s UM890 Pro testing covers gaming and cooling, while ServeTheHome’s review discusses the platform. Do not assume a particular noise level or sustained performance from the CPU name alone; operating mode and workload matter.

External GPU expansion: only if the port is right

An external GPU can extend a mini PC’s gaming life, but it is not a free upgrade. A native OCuLink connection generally offers a more direct PCIe link and less overhead than USB4, but requires a compatible dock, cable, power supply, and graphics card. USB4 or Thunderbolt is more convenient and useful for peripherals, but its bandwidth and latency constraints can reduce eGPU performance. Attaching a monitor directly to the external GPU can avoid some of the performance loss associated with sending rendered frames back to the mini PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify whether OCuLink is a native port on the exact model. Some setups use an M.2 adapter, which can occupy an internal storage slot and complicate the build. Also price the entire eGPU setup: dock and GPU costs can approach or exceed the mini PC’s price. If there is no suitable expansion connection, treat internal graphics as the system’s practical long-term gaming ceiling.

How to choose the right mini gaming PC

Start with resolution and games

  • 1080p at 60Hz: A Ryzen 7 7840HS/8845HS- or Ryzen 9 8945HS-class system can suit esports, older games, indies, and some newer titles with settings adjusted.
  • 1080p at 120–240Hz: Best suited to esports-focused systems or a discrete-GPU mini PC. An entry-level iGPU is unlikely to sustain high-refresh rates in demanding games.
  • 1440p: Prefer a discrete-GPU configuration; the strongest integrated systems may handle selected games with compromises. Check real game tests at the resolution you intend to use.
  • 4K: Generally requires a discrete GPU and game-specific settings or upscaling. Do not treat integrated graphics as a general 4K gaming solution.

When comparing tests, note whether resolution is native or upscaled, ray tracing is enabled, and frame generation is used. Those settings can change apparent performance substantially.

Check memory before buying

For a premium gaming mini PC, 32GB is a sensible baseline; 16GB may suffice for budget gaming but leaves less headroom for newer games, browsers, and background apps. Integrated graphics use system memory, making bandwidth and capacity especially important. High-end APU systems may have soldered or otherwise less user-upgradeable memory, so check before purchase. On the ROG NUC 2025, ASUS lists two removable CSODIMM modules and a maximum of 96GB; do not assume every system offers the same flexibility.

Count the whole storage and setup

Check M.2 slot count, PCIe generation, whether the included SSD is replaceable, and whether adding a second drive requires removing the system drive. Add the power brick, cables, and space needed for airflow to the advertised chassis size. A tiny box inside a closed cabinet can run hotter, louder, or slower; leave room around its exhaust.

Assess noise and sustained performance

Compact systems have less room for cooling than towers. Look for reviews that report gaming noise and performance after extended play, not only a short benchmark. Fan behavior can change sharply between quiet and performance modes; a small, fast PC that becomes distracting during a long session may be a poor fit for a living room.

Check ports and living-room software

Confirm the exact SKU’s HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, USB-A layout, USB4 or Thunderbolt support, Ethernet speed, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and which USB-C ports support video or charging. ASUS lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and 2.5Gb Ethernet on the 2025 ROG NUC, but port capabilities should be checked against the individual configuration.

Windows can work well with a controller and Steam Big Picture, but a mini PC is not automatically console-simple. Updates, launcher sign-ins, anti-cheat requirements, shader compilation, and controller mapping still apply. Check for HDMI-CEC only if a specific model documents it; do not assume the TV can power and control the PC like a console.

Compare total cost, not barebones prices

Barebones systems may omit RAM, SSD, Windows, or—in some cases—the power adapter. Add those costs before comparing with a configured system. Prices and bundles vary by retailer, promotion, region, and memory capacity. The ROG NUC’s cited $2,799 U.S. starting price is a dated research signal, not a guaranteed current price; verify the exact configuration and availability before buying.

Alternatives: when a mini PC is the wrong form factor

  • Discounted previous-generation ROG NUC: Earlier models use Core Ultra 9 185H and RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 Laptop GPUs. Consider one only if its actual price is compelling next to the newer model. ASUS lists two SODIMM slots and 32GB maximum validated memory for that generation, citing thermal limitations. Check the previous ROG NUC specifications.
  • Ryzen 7 7840HS/8845HS mini PC: A potentially affordable option for light gaming, emulation, and older titles. It is a poor substitute for a discrete GPU in demanding new games.
  • Small-form-factor desktop: Choose this instead if you want a full desktop graphics card, more upgrade options, easier repairs, or potentially quieter sustained cooling. It will take up more space.
  • Gaming laptop: Better if you also need a built-in display, keyboard, battery, and portable setup. Compare total cost, since the mini PC still needs peripherals.
  • Handheld PC: Better for portable play and built-in controls, not a direct substitute for a fixed desktop gaming setup.
  • Mac mini: A strong compact general-purpose computer is not automatically a good Windows-game replacement. macOS compatibility, anti-cheat support, and game availability make it a less reliable default for a PC gaming library.

For wider category comparisons, see Notebookcheck’s reviewed mini-PC rankings and Windows Central’s mini-PC gaming guide. Different test methods and configurations mean their rankings should be read as evidence, not a directly comparable lab chart.

Quick buying verdict

  • Choose the ROG NUC 2025 if discrete RTX gaming in a very small chassis matters more than price; choose the GPU configuration that matches your target resolution.
  • Choose the ROG NUC RTX 5080 configuration if you want the strongest graphics option in this line and accept premium pricing, laptop-GPU limits, and compact-system cooling trade-offs.
  • Choose the GMKtec EVO-X2 if you want unusually strong integrated graphics and high-end general-purpose capability, and you are comfortable tuning game settings.
  • Choose the Minisforum UM890 Pro if affordable 1080p gaming and everyday computing matter more than AAA performance.
  • Choose a small-form-factor desktop or gaming laptop instead if you need easier graphics upgrades, better total-system value, or a built-in screen and battery.
